3 The Second Lesson Ephesians 5:15-20 Lector: A reading from Paul s Letter to the Ephesians. Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Lector: People: The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Holy Gospel John 6:51-58 Celebrant : The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus said, I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? So Jesus said to them, Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. Shearon Sykes Williams The Nicene Creed BCP p.358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made 3

4 man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Celebrant and People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against thee in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved thee with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ, have mercy upon us and forgive us; that we may delight in thy will, and walk in thy ways, to the glory of thy Name. Amen. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. Celebrant continues: It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God... Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Celebrant and People: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. People: Therefore let us keep the feast. The Bread and Wine are distributed to the communicants. Communion may be received around the Altar platform. Gluten-free wafers and chalice are available; please make your need known to the priest. If you do not wish to receive communion, please come forward with arms crossed to receive a blessing. 6

Post-Communion Prayer Celebrant and People : Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. Highly skilled professionals in their home countries need help to build job search skills and networking with professionals in their fields. The event that will be held on Saturday, Sept 15, 2:30-5 pm at the Christ Church of Capitol Hill. We expect people to attend, half of them refugee job seekers and their family members. Wednesday Night Addiction Series, hosted by Community of Hope at St. George's: Awareness ~ Personal Perspectives ~ Collective Responses, September 26th ~ October 3rd ~ October 10th, 7pm - 9pm in the Parish Hall. How does our faith call us to respond to addition? This is a bigger issue than any one person, any one family, or any one community. All are invited to gather for a series of evenings focused on learning about the challenges of addiction, and the paths forward, for prevention and recovery. Some of our focus will be on opioid addiction, although persons impacted by or concerned about any form of 9

10 addiction are strongly invited to participate and share their perspective as they feel comfortable. Our series will build toward the Forum and service on Sunday October 14th, where we will have a chance to reflect on how our faith is calling us to respond.
