2 PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD S PASSION! SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION NEXT SUNDAY S GOSPEL READING JOHN 20:1-9 At daybreak on the first day of the week the women who had come from Galilee with Jesus took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb; but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were puzzling over this, behold, two men in dazzling garments appeared to them. They were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground. They said to them, Why do you seek the living one among the dead? He is not here, but he has been r a i s e d. Remember what he said to you while he was still in Galilee, that t h e S o n o f Man must be handed over to sinners and be crucified, and rise on the third day. And they remembered his words. Then they returned from the tomb and announced all these things to the eleven and to all the others. The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James; the others who accompanied them also told this to the apostles, but their story seemed like nonsense and they did not believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb, bent down, and saw the burial cloths alone; then he went home amazed at what had happened. HOLY SATURDAY MARCH 30 THE LORD DESCENDS INTO HELL Something strange is happening - there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness. The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began. God has died in the flesh and hell trembles with fear. He has gone to search for our first parent, as for a lost sheep. Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, he has gone to free from sorrow the captives Adam and Eve, he who is both God and the son of Eve. The Lord approached them bearing the cross, the weapon that had won him the victory. At the sight of him Adam, the first man he had created, struck his breast in terror and cried out to everyone: My Lord be with you all. Christ answered him: And with your spirit. He took him by the hand and raised him up, saying: Awake, O sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will give you light. I am your God, who for your sake have become your son. Out of love for you and for your descendants I now by my own authority command all who are held in bondage to come forth, all who are in darkness to be enlightened, all who are sleeping to arise. I order you, O sleeper, to awake. I did not create you to be held a prisoner in hell. Rise from the dead, for I am the life of the dead. Rise up, work of my hands, you who were created in my image. Rise, let us leave this place, for you are in me and I am in you; together we form only one person and we cannot be separated. For your sake I, your God, became your son; I, the Lord, took the form of a slave; I, whose home is above the heavens, descended to the earth and beneath the earth. For your sake, for the sake of man, I became like a man without help, free among the dead. For the sake of you, who left a garden, I was betrayed to the Jews in a garden, and I was crucified in a garden. See on my face the spittle I received in order to restore to you the life I once breathed into you. See there the marks of the blows I received in order to refashion your warped nature in my image. On my back see the marks of the scourging I endured to remove the burden of sin that weighs upon your back. See my hands, nailed firmly to a tree, for you who once wickedly stretched out your hand to a tree. I slept on the cross and a sword pierced my side for you who slept in paradise and brought forth Eve from your side. My side has healed the pain in yours. My sleep will rouse you from your sleep in hell. The sword that pierced me has sheathed the sword that was turned against you. Rise, let us leave this place. The enemy led you out of the earthly paradise. I will not restore you to that paradise, but I will enthrone you in heaven. I forbade you the tree that was only a symbol of life, but see, I who am life itself am now one with you. I appointed cherubim to guard you as slaves are guarded, but now I make them worship you as God. The throne formed by cherubim awaits you, its bearers swift and eager. The bridal chamber is adorned, the banquet is ready, the eternal dwelling places are prepared, the treasure houses of all good things lie open. The kingdom of heaven has been prepared for you from all eternity. From The Office of Readings From an ancient homily on Holy Saturday THAT IN ALL THINGS GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED! PAGE 2

He explains with clarity how forgiveness frees not only the one who is forgiven, but the forgiver. The importance of this is shown in Christ's words, "As you forgive others, so I will forgive you" Matt. 6:14. Includes free bonus segment from Anger and Forgiveness by Deacon Dr. Bob McDonald. 7 ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH! DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY AND NINE-DAY NOVENA! Divine Mercy Sunday Service will take place on Sunday April 7, 2013 at 3:00pm and the Nine (9) Day Divine Mercy Novena will begin on Good Friday March 29, 2013 following the 3:00pm Stations of the Cross and will continue each day at 3:00pm to Divine Mercy Sunday. This is a wonderful time to celebrate the great mercy our Lord has for each one of us. This feast adds so much more meaning to the Easter Celebrations. It was Jesus, Himself who asked for it to be celebrated on the Second Sunday following Easter. There is a plenary indulgence offered at Divine Mercy Sunday as long as you do the following: 1) Begin the Divine Mercy Novena on Good Friday 2) Go to Confession up to 20 days before or after Divine Mercy Sunday. (There will be NO confessions on Divine Mercy Sunday) 3) Attend Divine Mercy Service and participate in the prayers. 4) Receive Holy Communion in a State of Grace on Divine Mercy Sunday. (No Communion at the Divine Mercy Service.) 5) Do Good Works of Charity. Our Lord Jesus said to St. Faustina, The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be like scarlet Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of Mercy. (Diary 699) The plenary indulgence does not change the promises of our Lord. Rather it provides the Church s highest mark of approval and endorsement. DIVINE MERCY NOVENA Jesus asked that the Feast of Divine Mercy be preceded by a Novena to the Divine Mercy which would begin on Good Friday. He gave St. Faustina an intention to pray for on each day of the Novena, saving for the last day the most difficult intention of all, the lukewarm and the indifferent of whom He said: These souls cause Me more suffering than all the others; it was from such souls that My Soul felt the most revulsion in the Garden of Olives. It was: My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass Me by. The last hope of salvation for them is to flee to My Mercy. In her dairy, St. Faustina wrote that Jesus told her; On each day of the Novena you will bring to My Heart a different group of souls and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy On each day you will beg My Father on the strength of My Passion for the graces for their souls. This Novena begins on Good Friday and ends on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 7 th. UT IN OMNIBUS GLORIFICETUR DEUS! PAGE 7
