1 May 27, 2018 The Most Holy Trinity ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH Stewardship Reflection on Readings DT 4: 32-34, 39-40; PS 33: 4-5, 6, 9, 18-20, 22; ROM 8: 14-17; MT 28: On this Sunday, the week after Pentecost, we celebrate The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity in the Church. We have celebrated this particular weekend in the Church for more than 700 years. Depending on your age, you may recall St. Pope John XXIII who organized and oversaw Vatican II. Interestingly, it was Pope John XXII ( ) who made this celebration official in the Church. We consider the Holy Trinity to be one of the great mysteries in the Church. It is the mystery of the identity of God. Who is God? God is one God in three Divine Persons the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Whether we are aware of this consciously or not, this is something each of us acknowledges in a number of ways, especially when we go to Mass. Every time we make the Sign of the Cross, we are making a statement about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. That statement is made often. At minimum it is made when the celebrating priest opens Mass with a sign of the cross. Just prior to the Gospel Reading we do an older version of the sign of the cross by making a small cross on our forehead, our lips, and our chest. The priest concludes the Mass with a blessing, and we all make a Sign of the Cross. There are so many other times before, during, and after Mass when we make the sign or the cross, and there may be other times in our daily lives when we do it. Pope Francis has said, Every time we make the sign of the cross, we draw closer to God. Perhaps we should do it even more often. What is a Eucharistic Procession? A Eucharistic procession is a festive, ancient practice which expresses outwardly our love of Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament, and is commonly held on or near the solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, or on a parish feast day. The procession gives us an opportunity to share Christ s presence with the community around us, as this Presence is for the whole world. Immediately following Mass, the Blessed Sacrament is placed in the monstrance, and the solemn procession moves from the church, around our church building, stopping briefly at stations for prayer. The goal of these stations is to help people remain focused on the Lord. Upon returning to the nave, final benediction is given, and the Blessed Sacrament is reposed. Join us on June 3, at 10:30 Mass, for the Eucharist and the Eucharistic Procession to follow, celebrating The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. If you attend another Mass time that weekend, join us for the Procession, beginning at about 11:30 am! When we celebrate our long weekend with our friends and family, help us remember, that our freedom to speak of you, and our freedom to worship you, and our freedom to do that which we ought to do, have all been bought at the price and sacrifice of many lives. Your Son died for our eternal life in heaven. So too, your children died protecting us here on earth. Help us be mindful this weekend and always of the sacrifices made by those in uniform for all our freedoms. Amen. Capital Campaign Giving Clarification To ensure your donation to the Capital Campaign is deposited correctly into that fund, please do the following: Use the Capital Campaign Envelope that is sent with your regular Offertory Envelopes. Only put Capital Campaign donations in that envelope. All monies put in a Capital Campaign Envelope will be credited to the Beacon of Faith Campaign. In the memo line of your check, write Capital Campaign, Beacon of Faith, or Building Campaign. If you do not do either of the above, your donation will be credited to the General Offertory Fund. Please do not put Offertory donations into the Capital Campaign Envelope as it will be credited to the Capital Campaign, If you use one check for Capital Campaign and Offertory, please be specific as to how you want the monies divided. Thank you for your continued support of the Beacon of Faith Campaign. If you have any questions, please call Nancy or Melissa at the office at Emergency Exits In our continued focus on safety, we ask everyone to note the emergency exits in case of an emergency, such as a fire. These exits might not be the ones through which you entered. There are five exits from the Nave, all clearly marked - two on either side of the altar, two behind the overflow area, and one at the main (West) entrance. Please note alternate exits in case the one nearest to you might be blocked during an emergency. If we must exit during an emergency, please help others near you that may need assistance. 7 Weekly faith topic Convalidation Paul Turner We d like to get our marriage blessed. A couple who were married outside the Catholic Church but who want the church s approval of their marriage may do so later in a ceremony they popularly call a blessing. Technically, we call it a convalidation. We use this ritual when we all come to an agreement that the marriage counts. Catholics choose to be married outside the church for various reasons. Sometimes one partner is formerly married, and the annulment has not yet been granted for the divorce. Sometimes the couple was unable to give time to marriage preparation, and their pastor could not accommodate them. Sometimes they are not very active in the church and choose a marriage ceremony that better fits their relationship high on romance, low on religion. The Catholic who chooses marriage outside the church withdraws from receiving communion. Later, though, the couple may have second thoughts. They grow to recognize their dependence on God and the church community. They miss the Eucharist. They want to share the sacraments with their children. So they contact the parish. Generally, the parish will invite the couple to some preparation family, pastoral, and spiritual formation. If previous marriages are involved, annulments are pursued. And then the marriage can be blessed. The ceremony may be as elaborate or simple as the couple wishes. They may even walk down the aisle with attendants, but most want a simple affair. We need two witnesses, like a best man and maid/matron of honor. As long as they understand what is happening, the witnesses may be of any age, gender, or faith. We also need a deacon or a priest. In places of the Catholic world where ordained ministers are scarce, another designated minister may serve as the church s official witness. Convalidation may include Mass, but it need not. We offer prayers, Scripture readings, the exchange of consent, the blessing of rings, prayers of the faithful, and blessings for the couple. It can be simple, yet solemn.
