19 The Chrism Mass, which bishop concelebrates with his presbyters from every part diocese, manifests communion priests with ir bishop clearly expresses unity priesthood sacrifice Christ, present in Church. Presbyters concelebrate this Mass as witnesses cooperators with ir bishop in consecration chrism because y share in bishop s sacred fice teaching, sanctifying governing people God. The Mass Chrism is an occasion for all ordained lay to renew ir commitment to participate, in ways proper to ir distinct roles, in priestly, prophetic royal fices Christ. The Chrism Mass is also occasion when holy chrism is consecrated oils blessed. For millennia, oil has been used for a variety purposes in human life: cooking baking, as a fuel for lamps, to heal wounds, to make bodies athletes limber slippery. In Bible, kings, priests prophets are anointed with oil. Anointing head a guest was a mark hospitality honour. Anointing body was part preparation rites for burial. Today, we also have many uses for oil. Oil keeps our vehicle engines appliances in smooth working order. Massage oil penetrates skin, making it glisten, soothing dryness. We ten depend upon olive or or plant oil in our food we use oil, too, to keep dough from sticking to our hs. We use it on roads to keep down dust because it lasts longer than water. What better sign to use, n, to show Holy Spirit s power to penetrate our lives deeply in a longlasting life-changing way, to give us life s true essential sustenance, to make evil unable to get a firm hold on us?
20 Blessing Oil Catechumens God is both source strength defender People God. The Oil Catechumens, used by Church in pre-baptismal anointings, is an effective sign this power. By its use, through ministry priests deacons, Church asks God to strengn those preparing for baptism, so that y might come to a deeper understing Gospel, steadfastly accept challenge Christian living, confidently press ir faith, be brought with joy to waters rebirth. Blessing Oil for Sick Christ s healing those with infirmities announced both coming Kingdom God Christ s victory over sin death. Through sacred ministry presbyters bishops in Anointing Sick, to which Apostle James gives witness, God s priestly people continues to commend sick to suffering glorified Lord, that he may raise m up save m. The gift Holy Spirit, called down upon oil to be blessed, makes Oil Sick a sacramental sign that Spirit s healing presence, power grace, a remedy in body, soul spirit for all who are anointed with it. By its use in Sacrament Anointing Sick, sick are strengned given courage, led to healing soul body, united more closely to Christ s redemptive Passion. Consecration Chrism Chrism is perfumed oil, a blend olive oil balsam. Consecrated during Mass Chrism by a bishop used in liturgical anointings persons (in Baptism, Confirmation Holy Orders) things ( dedication churches altars), its use implies abundance grace dedicated service to God. Its fragrant perfume reminds Christians that ir lives are to give f aroma Christ (2 Cor ). The words chrism Christ are related. Upon Christ, Anointed One, Spirit descended in form a dove, God declared him to be Beloved Son. By power Holy Spirit, chrism becomes a sign life salvation, inwardly transforming those who are anointed with it, marking m as priests, prophets, kings, all temples God s glory, witnesses to God s abundant goodness.
