5 Additional Questions, Resources, Etc. for the Episode 1. Revelation and Jesus title alternate Springfield Catholicism Project Amazed and Afraid: The Revelation of God Become Man Amazed and Afraid: Jesus both God and Human Episode focus on how Jesus of Nazareth fulfills the four tasks of the Messiah: gather the people; purify the temple; overcome enemies; and reign as Lord. BASIC RESOURCES FOR THIS EPISODE: Journal Book containing the first round of questions with related web links, glossary, connections for additional diocesan help, links for further study, and a short prayer; and the Prayer Book containing a copyright free Opening Prayer for this episode of song, reading, and prayer. MORE QUESTIONS: 5. If Christian radicalism isn t simply what occurred in the 1960 s in America what is it? 6. What does it mean to live under the total authority of a Lord and King? Is that appealing to us as Americans? 7. Even with all the violence in the world, how can I be unafraid and help bring on the peace of the Kingdom of God? 8. Why does Christian non-violence work? A CENTRAL THEME FOR IN-DEPTH WORK: Father Barron speaks of Jesus as a very disconcerting, even subversive figure, and cautions us about domesticating Jesus or diminishing the radical nature of who he was and is. 1. In what ways and by what actions would I be willing to describe Jesus as subversive? 2. What does the subversive nature of Jesus mean for me; a disciple called to follow in his footsteps? 3. What is preventing me from hearing and responding to this radical way of following Jesus? 5 Additional Questions, Resources, Etc.

7 Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The word of the Lord. John 1:1-5, 9-14 (shorter form) or John 1:1-18 (longer form) The Gospel reading for the Nativity of the Lord, Mass during the Day Lectionary for Mass, no. 16ABC The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. A reading from the holy Gospel according to John In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came to be through him, but the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, but his own people did not accept him. 7 Additional Questions, Resources, Etc.

8 But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man's decision but of God. And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father's only Son, full of grace and truth. The Gospel of the Lord. 9 Additional Questions, Resources, Etc. for the Episode 2. Teachings of Jesus title Springfield Catholicism Project Happy Are We: The Teachings of Jesus Episode focus on the teachings of Jesus highlighting the Beatitudes. MORE QUESTIONS: 6. How do I really love, that is, actually willing the good of the other for the other in all my relationships: family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, et al.? 7. Biblical freedom means the shaping of desire so as to make the achievement of the good, first possible, then effortless. How does this fit with a secular concept of freedom? 8. Have I ever been lured into a different spiritual space by Christian non-violence, beauty, truth, or goodness? Describe the experience. 9. How could society make it easier for me to be good? How will I do that precise thing for someone? A CENTRAL THEME FOR IN-DEPTH WORK: What does it mean to be truly free and how am I compelled to respond to that freedom? Father Barron would say that self-determination is not the ultimate definition of freedom; in fact, freedom is just an illusion if it does not involve detachment from the earthly lure of wealth, power, pleasure, and honor. Based on this statement, an impoverished person living under a third-world dictator could be freer than the average middle class American. 1. Do I agree with Father Barron s premise; why or why not? 2. What attachment in my life is most preventing me from being free? 3. If I were truly free, how would I be better able to pursue what is pleasing to God? 9 Additional Questions, Resources, Etc.

In the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the Presentation of the Lord s Prayer is usually celebrated with the elect during the Fifth Week of Lent after the Third Scrutiny. It is presented after they have completed the Period of the Catechumenate as a summary of what they have learned in word and action about praying. It is given to them by the Church assembled prior to the Easter Vigil because from antiquity the Lord s Prayer has been the prayer proper to those who in baptism have received the spirit of adoption. When the elect have been baptized and take part in their first celebration of the eucharist, they will join the rest of the faithful in saying the Lord s Prayer [RCIA, no. 149]. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. St. Anselm, , Bishop of Canterbury (England) and Doctor of the Church, wrote and taught theology. His famous definition of theology is fides quaerens intellectum: faith seeking understanding. This means, the task of theology, the study of God, is grounded first in faith. Because I already have faith, what do I want to understand in a deeper way? A CENTRAL THEME FOR IN-DEPTH WORK: One focus: understanding that God is a mystery that I am incapable of understanding during my time on this earth. Father Barron says that if I come to a place where I can define and understand God, what I have defined is not God, for God is mystery; there are no human constructs that can define and completely understand what is infinite. 1. How do I feel about this statement? 2. What understanding of God do I have, and in what ways can I see the limited extent of my understanding? 3. If God is, in fact, mystery, how can I enter into this mystery in my journey toward understanding? 13 Additional Questions, Resources, Etc.

Mary title Springfield Catholicism Project Our Tainted Nature s Solitary Boast: Mary, the Mother of God Episode focus on beliefs about Mary and practices concerning her. The Vatican Council II Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium addresses the relationship of devotions to the Liturgy: 13. Popular devotions of the Christian people are to be highly endorsed, provided they accord with the laws and norms of the Church, above all when they are ordered by the Apostolic See. Devotions proper to particular Churches also have a special dignity if they are undertaken by mandate of the bishops according to customs or books lawfully approved. But these devotions should be so fashioned that they harmonize with the liturgical seasons, accord with the sacred liturgy, are in some way derived from it, and lead the people to it, since, in fact, the liturgy, by its very nature far surpasses any of them. What devotions do I pray and how do they draw me to the Church s Liturgy and to Christ? A CENTRAL THEME FOR IN DEPTH WORK: Father Barron tells us that Mary is the model for what it means to be the People of God: to be faithful, patient, attentive to God s word, and quick to respond. 1. How would I describe what it means to be faithful and patient? 2. How would I go about trying to hear God s word for my life? 3. In what ways is God calling me to respond right now and what is preventing me from doing so? 17 Additional Questions, Resources, Etc.

18 MORE LINKS TO RELATED BARRON MATERIAL: A repeated link from the Journal Book, Episodet #1, page 4: The Genealogy of Jesus [7:43]: On the Gospel of the Christmas Vigil Mass Jesus is pleased to have all manner of people saints and scoundrels in his family From Robert Barron. Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of Faith, chapter 4, page 112: The cultural anthropologist and philosopher René Girard helps us to understand the pervasiveness of this practice [of human sacrifice] in the ancient world as well as the presence of it, in mitigated forms, today. When tensions arise within a society, Girard argues, a scapegoating mechanism is triggered. Following this largely unconscious impulse, we find someone or some group to blame and then, together, we discharge our anxiety onto him or them. In doing so we feel, however fleetingly, a rush of relief and a sense of common purpose. This is why we tend to feel that the gods are pleased with the scapegoating move. Human sacrifice is the extreme expression of this mechanism, and that is why it was so widely practiced, especially in societies that felt most acutely threatened by enemies or by the capricious elements of nature. The great pyramids of Teotihuacan outside Mexico City are architectural masterpieces, but they were also the setting for thousands upon thousands of human sacrifices offered to the bloodthirsty gods of the Aztecs. As I have suggested, Girard feels that to one degree or another all human groups from the coffee klatch, to the faculty lounge, to the nation-state tend to organize themselves around scapegoating, blaming, and recrimination. He then challenges us to what St. Paul calls participation in Christ turning our life over to the power of Christ. He tells us that love is literally swimming in the power of Christ. 1. Catechism of the Catholic Church OTHER: Vatican Council II, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, 4 December Liturgy celebrates the Paschal Mystery as the redeeming work of Jesus Christ the Lord: 5. The wonderful works of God among the people of the Old Testament were a prelude to the work of Christ the Lord. He achieved his task of redeeming humanity and giving perfect glory to God, principally by the paschal mystery of his blessed passion, resurrection from the dead, and glorious ascension, whereby dying, he destroyed our death and, rising, he restored our life. For it was from the side of Christ as he slept the sleep of death upon the cross that there came forth the sublime sacrament of the whole Church. Liturgy celebrates the many ways Christ is present in the Church: 7. To accomplish so great a work, Christ is always present in his Church, especially in its liturgical celebrations. 33 minister, the same now offering, through the ministry of priests, who formerly offered himself on the cross, but especially under the eucharistic elements. By his power he is present in the sacraments, so that when a man baptizes it is really Christ himself who baptizes. He is present in his word, since it is he himself who speaks when the holy Scriptures are read in the Church. He is present, lastly, when the Church prays and sings, for he promised: Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them (Mt 18:20). Christ always truly associates the Church with himself in this great work wherein God is perfectly glorified and the recipients made holy. The Church is the Lord s beloved Bride who calls to him and through him offers worship to the eternal Father. Liturgy is both the summit and the fount for the Church: 10. Still, the liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the fount from which all the Church s power flows. For the aim and object of apostolic works is that all who are made children of God by faith and baptism should come together to praise God in the midst of his Church, to take part in the sacrifice, and to eat the Lord's supper. The liturgy in its turn moves the faithful, filled with the paschal sacraments, to be one in holiness; it prays that they may hold fast in their lives to what they have grasped by their faith; the renewal in the eucharist of the covenant between the Lord and his people draws the faithful into the compelling love of Christ and sets them on fire. From the liturgy, therefore, particularly the eucharist, grace is poured forth upon us as from a fountain; the liturgy is the source for achieving in the most effective way possible human sanctification and God s glorification, the end to which all the Church s other activities are directed. The goal of the whole liturgical reform called for by Vatican Council II: 14. The Church earnestly desires that all the faithful be led to that full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations called for by the very nature of the liturgy. Such participation by the Christian people as a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God s own people (1 Pt 2:9; see 2:4-5), is their right and duty by reason of their baptism. In the reform and promotion of the liturgy, this full and active participation by all the people is the aim to be considered before all else. For it is the primary and indispensable source from which the faithful are to derive the true Christian spirit and therefore pastors must zealously strive in all their pastoral work to achieve such participation by means of the necessary instruction. Liturgy brings about real change in the Faithful: 48. The Church, therefore, earnestly desires that Christ's faithful, when present at this mystery of faith, should not be there as strangers or silent spectators; on the contrary, through a good understanding of the rites and prayers they should take part in the sacred service conscious of what they are doing, with devotion and full involvement. They should be instructed by God's word and be nourished at the table of the Lord's body; they should give thanks to God; by offering the immaculate Victim, not only through the hands of the priest, but also with him, they should learn also to offer themselves as well; through Christ the Mediator, they should be formed day by day into an ever more perfect unity with God and with each other, so that finally God may be all in all. 34 On Ecumenical and Interreligious Activity, Rev. Kevin Laughery, Ecumenical and Interreligious Officer, Diocese of Springfield in Illinois: Fr. Barron speaks of having a good religious argument as the proper moderating stance between an apathetic tolerance and wanting to kill someone who does not believe the same as oneself. It is clear that Catholic directives for fostering relationships with non-catholics consistently speak of dialogue. A good further study resource is Walter Cardinal Kasper, Harvesting the Fruits, from which this quote comes: In order to reach this ultimate goal [Christian unity], ecumenical dialogue seeks step by step to achieve many intermediate goals. It could be said that the ecumenical movement is a common pilgrimage, by means of different forms of dialogue, which intimately belong together and complement each other. Thus ecumenical dialogue is theological dialogue in truth and practical cooperation, a dialogue of love and life; at its heart it is a spiritual dialogue. Walter Kasper. Harvesting the Fruits: Basic Aspects of Christian Faith in Ecumenical Dialogue (Kindle Locations ). Kindle Edition. By analogy, similar things can be said about interreligious dialogue. Such dialogue goes deeper than argument, with its implications of winning and losing and of scoring points. It involves getting to know the dialogue partner so as to appreciate the faithstance of the partner. Roman Pontifical, Dedication of a Church and an Altar: On the first celebration in a new church building reflecting, teaching, and praying the very nature of Church Introduction: on the nature and dignity of church buildings: DCA, II, no. 1. Through his death and resurrection, Christ became the true and perfect temple of the New Covenant and gathered together a people to be his own. This holy people, made one as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one, is the Church, that is, the temple of God built of living stones, where the Father is worshiped in spirit and in truth. Rightly, then, from early times church has also been the name given to the building in which the Christian community gathers to hear the word of God, to pray together, to receive the sacraments, and to celebrate the eucharist. 2. Because the church is a visible building, it stands as a special sign of the pilgrim Church on earth and reflects the Church dwelling in heaven. When a church is erected as a building destined solely and permanently for assembling the people of God and for carrying out sacred functions, it is fitting that it be dedicated to God with a solemn rite, in accordance with the ancient custom of the Church. 3. The very nature of a church demands that it be suited to sacred celebrations, dignified, evincing a noble beauty, not mere costly display, and it should stand as a sign and symbol of heavenly realities. The general plan of the sacred edifice should be such that in some way it conveys the image of the gathered assembly. It should also allow the participants to take the place most appropriate to them and assist all to carry out their individual functions properly. Additional Questions, Resources, Etc. 34

37 Additional Questions, Resources, Etc. for the Episode 7. Liturgy & Eucharist title Springfield Catholicism Project Word Made Flesh, True Bread of Heaven: The Mystery of the Liturgy and the Eucharist Episode focus on Mass and the Eucharist. MORE QUESTIONS: 6. Participation in the Liturgy reminds me of my total dependence on God. Is this an easy message to receive? How does it compare to our culture s notion of the self-made man or woman? 7. Jesus says to us about his Body and Blood: take and eat take and drink do this in memory of me. How is my life enriched by receiving Holy Communion under Both Kinds? If I only or usually receive the host only, why am I reluctant to also drink from the cup? An excerpt from the preaching of Bishop George Lucas, 28 May 2000, part of a seven-part series on the Holy Eucharist in the Life of the Church: Our Catholic tradition holds very clearly that Jesus is fully, really present under both the form of bread and the form of wine. The risen Jesus can neither be divided up nor diminished. It is never required for an individual to receive the Eucharist under both species or forms in fact, sometimes it is impossible. At the same time, under normal circumstances at a parish Mass, for instance all who can are encouraged to share in the cup as well as the host. This is in response to the invitation of Jesus himself to take and eat and take and drink. We might look at it this way. Jesus is no more present to us whether we communicate under one form or both, but, by our action, we are making ourselves more present to him. And when we are more fully disposed, more present, we give grace a more fertile spot to take root and grow..let us not be shy about accepting the Lord s own invitation to eat the bread of life and drink the cup of salvation. 37 Additional Questions, Resources, Etc.

38 8. Father Barron comments on sacrifice and gift: This corresponds to what John Paul II termed the law of the gifts, the spiritual principle that one s being increases in the measure that one gives it away. What is given back to God, sacrificed to him, breaks against the rock of the divine self-sufficiency and returns for the benefit of the one who has made the offering. Sacrifice produces communion [Catholicism, Chapter 7, page 183]. How does sacrifice in my life produce unity with others? A CENTRAL THEME FOR IN-DEPTH WORK: Father Barron calls our attention to the way in which we as a society spend a lot of time and energy judging each other: who is in and who is out, who is up and who is down, who is winning and who is losing. He then points out that this is what makes Catholics gathering for worship so subversive, because at Mass we believe all are equal, all arrive as beloved children of God. He reminds us that as St. Paul points out: There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for we are all one in Christ Jesus. 1. Is this my experience of gathering for Sunday worship; do I leave my judging nature at the door and gather to worship with everyone as my equal? If not, why do I think it is so difficult to let go of my tendency to judge others? 2. What does our parish do to show that it truly believes that all who enter, or desire to enter, through the doors of our church are and will be treated equally? 3. Where do I find myself, even during the sacred Liturgy, judging or condemning those who are worshipping around me, and what can I do to overcome this? Holy Orders and Matrimony are the Sacraments at the Service of Communion (the community of the Church). This means they are primarily directed toward the salvation of others. If they benefit the personal salvation of the ordained or married person, it is through service to others that this happens.
