2 Theme: The Sunday Readings summary of the New Law: love of God and love of neighbor. First Reading (Ex 22: 20-26) The first reading is taken form the long Book of the Covenant, the law dictated to Moses by God. In this passage God commands that he will not brook injustice from His people, neither to strangers nor to the weak of helpless. Gods wrath will punish transgressors. Second Reading (1 Thes 1:5-10) Paul praises the Church in Thessalonica for the example it gives to the rest of Greece, despite the persecution and trials that beset it. Gospel: (Mt 22:1-4 ) Let us not be distracted today by the trap set by Jewish concern ourselves with its context. Jesus gives a reply that summarizes the New Law in two commandments, which summarize all the prescripts of the Old Covenant. It is not the answer His questions expected, but it is a way of life for each one of us. Thought for the Day: There are some today who preach that our love for God is expressed in our love of neighbor. While this is true, there is a danger in the statement that it focuses too great attention on our neighbor to the exclusion of God. The command of Christ was in two parts: love of God and love of neighbor. If we do not practice the first part in all that in implies, then our love of neighbor is mere humanism, which is a great error of our times. 4 St. Coleman s Men s Club Christmas Raffle to benefit the homeless shelter Catholic Charities All Saints Day Wednesday, November 1st Holy Day of Obligation The Men s club begins its annual Christmas community. The party with Santa will be Saturday afternoon, December 2 nd. The Men s club also plans to purchase a special learning computer for the homeless shelter operated by Catholic Charities. Tickets are $10 each and are available for purchase after each mass. You can also purchase tickets from any Men s Club member. There will be five cash prizes including a $1,000 grand prize. Any questions call Joe Testa at Starting November 18th, the 6:00PM mass (on the first, third and fifth Saturdays of the month) will become the youth mass. This mass will be a great experience and open to everyone. All middle schoolers are encouraged to participate in our EDGE nights. Those children will go to the Holy Family Center following this mass. Those attending EDGE nights must complete and send in a registration form located in the back of the church or on the church website. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven. It should not be confused with All Souls' Day, which is observed on November 2, and is dedicated to those who have died and not yet reached heaven. Although millions, or even billions of people may already be saints, All Saints' Day observances tend to focus on known saints --that is those recognized in the canon of the saints by the Catholic Church. All Saints' Day is also commemorated by members of the Eastern Orthodox Church as well as some protestant churches, such as Anglican, Lutheran and Anglican churches. Generally, All Saints' Day is a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation, meaning all Catholics are required to attend Mass on that day, unless they have an excellent excuse, such as serious illness. Other countries have different rules according to their national bishop's conferences. The bishops of each conference have the authority to amend the rules surrounding the obligation of the day. All Saints' Day was formally started by Pope Boniface IV, who consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to the Virgin Mary and all the Martyrs on May 13 in 609 AD. 5 What is a Sacrament? The liturgical life of the Catholic Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the sacraments. There are seven sacraments in the Church: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Matrimony, and Holy Orders. The purpose of the sacraments is to make people holy, to build up the body of Christ, and finally, to give worship to God; but being signs, they also have a teaching function. They not only presuppose faith, but by words and object, they also nourish, strengthen, and express it; that is why they are called "sacraments of faith." The sacraments impart grace, but, in addition, the very act of celebrating them disposes the faithful most effectively to receive this grace in a fruitful manner, to worship God rightly, and to practice charity. Sanctifying grace is free gift of God which allows us to become children of God, to share in the divine nature, and to inherit eternal life. The history of human salvation is the history of the way God came to men. The first step on this way was the bridging of the gulf separating God and man in the person of the one Mediator Jesus Christ and by his work of redemption. By means of his Church Christ makes his grace available to all. Only in this application of redemption to mankind is the redemptive action of Christ completed. The doctrine of the sacraments is the doctrine of the second part of God's way of salvation to us. It deals with the holy signs which Christ instituted as the vehicles of his grace. The sacrament of confirmation completes the sacrament of baptism. If baptism is the sacrament of re-birth to a new and supernatural life, confirmation is the sacrament of maturity and coming of age. The real confession of Christ consist in this 'that the whole man submits himself to Truth, in the judgment of his understanding, in the submission of his will and in the consecration of his whole power of love... To do this, poorspirited man is only able when he has been confirmed by God's grace' This confirmation in the power of the Holy Spirit leading to a firm profession of faith has always been the particular effect which Catholic tradition has ascribed to the sacrament. It is effect which complements and completes that of baptism. THE CHURCH TEACHES Confirmation is a true sacrament instituted by Christ and different from baptism. It is administered by laying-on of hands and anointing with chrism accompanied by prayer. The chrism is blessed by the bishop and the bishop administers the sacrament. All baptized persons can and should be confirmed. The effect of the sacrament of confirmation is to give strength in faith and for the confession of faith and to impress an indelible character. 6 St. Coleman s Men s Club Basketball League Come join a fun, instructional program designed to help teach children; boys and girls Grade K-8, the great game of basketball with no pressure on the children. Leagues will depend on the number of children registered. The highlight of the season is the All Star Game, with a party for the children planned by Coach Tony and Olympic style medals for all players attending and added to this year's program will be a Knight's of Columbus foul shooting Contest! VOLUNTEERS of all ages are needed to keep this valuable program going, and coaches are especially being asked to help! The registration fee is $50.00 and please go to the St. Coleman's Men's Club website at to preregister. The final day to register will be Wednesday, October 18th beginning at 6:15 pm and evaluations for all players, pre-registered as well, and will be held from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm on the basketball court. The program will start on Monday, October 23, and practices will be on Monday and Games will be held on Wednesday. These days are new this year due to the fact parents experienced so many scheduling conflicts in the past.
