1 SoCI'OlllCld OfZ\ll0iltlillg ANOINTING OF THE SICK "Heal the sick!" Mt 10:8 "Is any among you sick? Let him call the presbyters of the church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord." Jas 5: 14 From allciellt times the Church has allointed the sick with blessed oil. Over the cellfllries the alloilltillg of the sick was reserved more alld more exclusively for those at the point of death. The Secolld Vaticall Coullci/urged that the Sacrament be rellewed to illclude prayer for healillg as well as for the remissioll of sill. Today the Sacrament of the Sick is given to those who are seriously ill, facing surgery or in danger of death from sickness or old age by anointing them on the forehead and hands with blessed oil. The Sacrament is a gift of the Holy Spirit one of strengthening, peace and courage to overcome the difficulties that go with the illness and frailties of old age. The Sacrament gives us the strength and gift of uniting oneself more closely to Christ's Passion. The Sacrament prepares us for the final journey; it completes our conformity to the death and resurrection of Christ, just as Baptism began it. Priests are the ministers of the Anointing of the Sick. VIATICUM "Last Rites" Viaticum is a Latin word which means food for a journey. The church offers those who are about to leave this life the Eucharist as Viaticum. Viaticum is administered by an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, a deacon or a priest. For More information call Health Care Ministry, Archdiocese of Boston,
2 Office of Chaplaincy Programs Archdiocese of Boston Workshops Faith Community Nursing What is the Mission ofparishlfaith Community Nursing? The mission of parish nursing is the intentional integration of the practice of faith with the practiced of nursing so that people can achieve wholeness in, with, and through the community of faith in which parish nurses serve. The belief that health is a journey toward wellbeing and is the interrelationship of body, mind, and spirit is core to parish nursing. Health is not merely the absence of disease. It is related to everything a person does, thinks, and feels; therefore, parish nurses focus on the whole person as they promote well ness, disease prevention, health education, and healthy spirituality. Faith Commullity Nursillg is a 40-hour program with 38 CEU's Contact Karen Wenger for more info at KWenger@rcab.org or For more information on the fallowing workshops contact Karen Farrell at KFarrell@rcab.org or Pastoral Visitor Program A collaborative effort to support parish pastoral visitation programs to the sick and homebound and to residents of nursing care facilities. The QPR mission is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. The signs of crisis are all around us. We believe that quality education empowers all people, regardless of their background, to make a positive difference in the life of someone they know. QPR is a 11/2 hour program for adults and a program for high school age youth Compassion Fatigue and Burn Out "Compassion fatigue, especially among our clergy, religious, and church workers is a real problem in the continuing demands of the church today. The servant leaders today of the church are always "on" and there is never a time when they are not responsible for their ministry." We have been taught to "die to self' and in trying to live this as a life-style, the self can die and burnout, or compassion fatigue often sets in, sometimes both. There is no longer the desire to serve. We are tired, and our "yes's" are no longer as enthusiastic as they used to be". Marry Frances Seeley, OSF, PH.D Compassion Fatigue and Burn Out is a 11/2 hour workshop based in Body, Mind, and Spirit. Funeral Planning Funeral planning is a workshop based to help parishes work with parishioners preparing the funeral rites. This workshop helps to understand the funeral rite as described in the Order of Christion Funerals and how the funeral is an important aspect of bereavement process.
