People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The Collect for Purity Gloria in excelsis Said by all Said by the Celebrant Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

2 The Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. People Amen. Then all are seated The Word of God The Lesson Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9 Moses said: And now, O Israel, give heed to the statutes and the ordinances which I teach you, and do them; that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, gives you. You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it; that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you. Keep them and do them; for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what great nation is there that has a God so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? And what great nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law which I set before you this day? Only take heed, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; make them known to your children and your children s children. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. A period of silence follows the Lesson Psalm 15 Domine, quis habitabit? The Psalm is read by the Lector and Congregation, alternating by whole verse Lord, who may dwell in your tabernacle? * who may abide upon your holy hill? Whoever leads a blameless life and does what is right, * who speaks the truth from his heart. 2

3 There is no guile upon his tongue; he does no evil to his friend; * he does not heap contempt upon his neighbor. In his sight the wicked is rejected, * but he honors those who fear the Lord. He has sworn to do no wrong * and does not take back his word. He does not give his money in hope of gain, * nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. Whoever does these things * shall never be overthrown. The Epistle James 1:17-27 Every good endowment and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. Know this, my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, for the anger of man does not work the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rank growth of wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who observes his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But he who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer that forgets but a doer that acts, he shall be blessed in his doing. If any one thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this man s religion is vain. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Now when the Pharisees gathered together to him, with some of the scribes, who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they wash their hands, observing the tradition of the elders; and when they come from the market place, they do not eat 3

4 unless they purify themselves; and there are many other traditions which they observe, the washing of cups and pots and vessels of bronze.) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with hands defiled? And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men. You leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men. And he called the people to him again, and said to them, Hear me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a man which by going into him can defile him; but the things which come out of a man are what defile him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, fornication, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a man. Gospeler The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rev. Peter James Speropulos An extended silence follows the Sermon, all seated Following the silence, all stand with the Celebrant and say together The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; 4

5 he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People The Leader and People pray responsively V. Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; R. That we all may be one. V. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; R. That your Name may be glorified by all people. V. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; R. That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. V. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; for our nation, for those serving in the armed forces and their families, for our government and for our enemies; R. That there may be justice and peace on the earth. V. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; R. That our works may find favor in your sight. V. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; R. That they may be delivered from their distress. V. Give to the departed eternal rest; R. Let light perpetual shine upon them. V. We praise you for the Blessed Virgin Mary, Blessed Michael and All Angels, Blessed George, and all your saints who have entered into joy; R. May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. 5

Silence The People may add their own petitions The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect All kneel Confession of Sin Celebrant and People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. 7 The Holy Communion The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant People Celebrant People Celebrant People The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds with the Proper Preface, which concludes Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus and Benedictus qui venit Said by all Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The People kneel and the Celebrant continues Celebrant Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:. Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Then the Celebrant continues with the Eucharistic Prayer, which concludes All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. All AMEN. 7

8 The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The Celebrant breaks the Bread and a period of silence is kept; then is said Celebrant Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People Therefore let us keep the feast. The Invitation and Ministration of Communion All Christians baptized with water in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are invited to receive the consecrated Body and Blood of Christ. To receive the Host, extend palms, crossed and upward; when offered the chalice, please assist in guiding it. Each communicant may say Amen as the elements are given. Those desiring a blessing, but not the Sacrament, may come to the Altar rail and cross their arms on their chest. A period of silence follows the Communion of the People The Postcommunion Prayer Said by all kneeling Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. 8

Follow the signs to the room in the lower level located near the school playground stairwell. SUMMER SLUMP! It s common for churches to experience what s been thoughtfully (or painfully) coined the summer giving slump, when giving declines between the months of May and August. Many churches like CSMSG see a 20% or more decrease in giving during these months, due to members being on vacation, going to BBQs, traveling with family, etc. You can help CSMSG avoid the slump in two ways: * Pay your pledge in full now, instead of at the end of the year; * Send in those pledge payments you will miss while you are away this summer. You may give online at anytime from anywhere. Go to click on Stewardship, then click on Give Now. In spite of the slump, God is at work at CSMSG this summer! We are gearing up for what is sure to be a spectacular fall. Thank you for your support!

Did you know that the majority of the stained glass windows here at CSMSG were done by Emil Frei, Sr., a Bavarian who moved to NYC in 1895? He found his way to St. Louis (and its large German population) and opened an art glass studio in 1898 on South Broadway. He won the Grand Prize in the 1904 World s Fair for stained glass he created for the Holy Family Church in Watertown, NY. He became the pinnacle of the art of painting on glass; on his great reputation, he was commissioned to undertake the mosaic design for the Cathedral on Lindell.
