1 Reports to: Liturgical Commission Lay Presider Coordinator Position Description Liturgical Commission Chair, currently the Director of Liturgy Ministry Purpose / Objective: To provide lay ministers for those liturgical events that do not require the leadership of an ordained minister. General Responsibilities of All Ministry Coordinators: Discerns God s message in one s own life regarding stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure. Is familiar with ministry guidelines and General Parish Procedures, especially facility usage. Maintains updated participant records including phone numbers and addresses. Recruits new ministry members, using bulletin announcements, etc. Confirms with parish secretary that volunteer is a registered member of Immaculate Conception. Responds to inquiries from prospective ministers, (verbal, , telephone, Time & Talent sheets, interest sheet on back of registration form) regarding your ministry within ten business days. Maintains accurate records to provide ministry specific input for (see templates): o Quarterly Stewardship Bulletin Report o Annual Stewardship Report o Prepare documentation for this ministry s budget o Ministry Goals and Objectives o Ministry successes Writes and submits bulletin articles and when appropriate, a thank you for the bulletin, especially after special events, giving a full accounting of number of participants, items collected, etc. Keeps the Commission Chair advised of needs, issues, and positive experiences so they can be incorporated into the planning process. 2 Responsibilities of Lay Presider Coordinator: Recruits and schedules ministers for Liturgy of the Hours,Novena/Communion Services, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Recruits must be approved by Directory of Liturgy. Understands the liturgical events needing Lay Presiders. Familiar with Guidelines for Lay Presiders. Trains new ministers or designates a trainer for such. Schedules other liturgical ministers for these events as needed. Special Activities: Hosts an orientation for new ministers. Annual parish Leadership training. Formation sessions for this specific ministry, when offered. Meetings (when held, frequency, etc.): Meetings are specific to number of individuals needing to be trained/updated. All Commission meetings. Attends Formation sessions for all lay ministers and for this specific ministry, when offered. Time Commitment: Time to be allotted to the Following Tasks: Average Time (these times are average and may vary depending upon the individual completing the work, and the situation.) Understanding of liturgical event 2 hours/year Recruiting ministers 6 hours/year Training new ministers 6 hours/year Scheduling ministers 1 hour/quarter Annual Goals & Objectives 3-5 hours/year Expected Length of Commitment: Two years, and may be extended by one year with a maximum term of three years. Qualifications Required: Is in full communion with the Catholic Church. Has received the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. 3 Lay Presider Coordinator Resource(s): Assistant Coordinator Assists the Coordinator and prepares to take over his/her duties and responsibilities at the end of coordinator s term. 4 General Tasks: Liturgical Commission Lay Presider Coordinator Task List Recruits new members Maintains member list and advises secretary of any changes to ministers records (phone number, , address). Conducts training sessions during the course of the year in coordination with the Director of Liturgy and the Liturgical Commission. o Ensures training dates and times are on the parish calendar. Completes Facility Reservation Form (FRF) for dates when utilizing the De Sales Faith Formation Center or the church facilities. Contacts Business Manager to fill out Facility Access/Magnetic Lock Keycard Record & Agreement for assignment of Access keycard when utilizing the De Sales Faith Formation Center or the church facilities. Reviews and updates ministry guidelines yearly. Performs regular ministry duties in accordance with the Lay Presider Guidelines. Participates in Commissions/Stewardship Fairs. o Updates Story Board for Commissions/Stewardship Fair. o Recruits members of ministry for implementing Commissions/Stewardship Fair. Evaluates the ministry yearly, (What worked well? What didn t work well? What needs to be done differently?) Additional Tasks: Utilize Reference materials distributed by or available through Director of Liturgy. e.g. o Lay Presiding - The Art Of Leading Prayer (Kathleen Hughes) o Christian Prayer: The Liturgy of the Hours (Approved for use in the Diocese of the United States of America by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and Confirmed by the Apostolic See) o USCCB Weekday Celebrations In the Absence of a Priest o USCCB Adoration and Holy Hours Page 4 Ministry Position Description Revised: 06/30/2013

5 Liturgical Commission Lay Presider Liturgy of the Hours Position Description Reports to: Lay Presider Coordinator, (currently the Director of Liturgy). Ministry Purpose / Objective: To provide lay ministers for the above liturgical events that do not require the leadership of an ordained minister in order to offer other liturgical prayer possibilities for parishioners, especially in the absence of a priest. General Responsibilities of All Ministry Members: Discerns God s message in one s own life regarding stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure. Is familiar with ministry guidelines and General Parish Procedures. Presents ministry in a positive light at all times. Responsibilities of Lay Presider Liturgy of the Hours: Familiar with liturgical guidelines of Liturgy of the Hours prayer. Familiar with Christian Prayer: The Liturgy of the Hours. Prepares in advance the appropriate day's prayer. Presides at parish Liturgy of the Hours events. Provides general instructions for those new to this type of prayer. Special Activities: Attends training sessions directed by the Coordinator. Attends refresher training at discretion of coordinator and Director of Liturgy. Meetings (when held, frequency, etc.): Attends initial training and any subsequent refresher training as scheduled by coordinator, normally offered annually Attends Formation sessions for all liturgical ministers, when offered. 6 Time Commitment: Time to be allotted to the Following Tasks: Average Time (these times are average and may vary depending upon the individual completing the work, and the situation.) Preparation: 20 minutes each event Event: 30 minutes each event (normally Tuesday mornings, 9:00am to 9:30am; Thursday mornings, same time, in the absence of a priest) Expected Length of Commitment: At least one year. Qualifications Required: Is in full communion with the Catholic church. Has received the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Practices the Catholic faith through regular attendance at liturgy and reception of the Sacraments. 7 Liturgical Commission Lay Presider Novena / Communion Service / First Friday Exposition of the Blessed SacramentAdoration Position Description Reports to: Lay Presider Coordinator, (currently the Director of Liturgy). Ministry Purpose / Objective: To provide lay ministers for the above liturgical events that do not require the leadership of an ordained minister in order to offer other liturgical prayer possibilities for parishioners, especially in the absence of a priest. General Responsibilities of All Ministry Members: Discerns God s message in one s own life regarding stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure. Is familiar with ministry guidelines and General Parish Procedures. Presents ministry in a positive light at all times. Responsibilities of Lay Presider Novena / Communion Service / First Friday/Adoration: Familiar with novenas to the Blessed Mother. Familiar with liturgical guidelines for Communion Services in the absence of a priest. Prepares in advance the appropriate day's prayers and reflection on the readings from available resources. Presides at parish Novena/Communion Services. Provides general instructions for those new to these types of events. Familiar with liturgical guidelines for the First Friday Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in the absence of a priest and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in general. Prepares the necessary items needed for the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and returns them to their respective places after service. 8 Meetings (when held, frequency, etc.): Attends initial training and any subsequent refresher training as scheduled by coordinator. Time Commitment: Time to be allotted to the Following Tasks: Average Time (these times are average and may vary depending upon the individual completing the work, and the situation.) Preparation of Reflection: 15 minutes to one hour each event Novena/Communion Service: 1 hour each event Monday-9:00am Communion Service: 45 minutes Wednesdays and Fridays in the absence of a priest First Friday Exposition of Adds 15 minutes to the above on the the Blessed Sacrament: first Friday of the month in the absence of a priest Closing prayer: 15 minutes at 3:00pm in the absence of a priest Hour of Adoration: Opening & closing prayer 1 hour each event Expected Length of Commitment: At least one year. Qualifications Required: Practices the Catholic faith through regular attendance at liturgy and reception of the sacraments. Has received the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Demonstrates leadership skills needed to lead prayer In regard to presiding at Communion Services: The Bishop, priest, and deacon are the ordinary ministers of the Eucharist. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are members of the lay faithful who are recommended by the Pastor and appointed by the Bishop to distribute the Body and Blood of Christ to a specific parish community for a period of three years.
