1 A Christmas Eve Service of Lessons and Carols Idlewild Presbyterian Church December 24, 2016 at 5:00 p.m.
2 INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE PRELUDE ASEMBLE IN GOD S NAME ORGAN PRELUDE THREE ORGAN CAROLS HELMUT WALCHA ( ) HIM THE SHEPHERDS PRAISE SO GREATLY ALL MY HEART WITH JOY IS SPRINGING IN BETHLEHEM IS BORN CONGREGATIONAL CAROL SUNG IN PROCESSION ONCE IN ROYAL DAVID S CITY IRBY One Voice: 1. Once in royal David s city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her, little child. *Women and Children: 2. He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall; With the poor and meek and lowly, Lived on earth our Savior holy. *All: 3. And, through all his wondrous childhood, 5. For he is our childhood s pattern; He would honor and obey, Day by day, like us he grew; Love and watch the lowly maiden, He was little, weak and helpless, In whose gentle arms he lay: Tears and smiles like us he knew; Christian children all must be And he feeleth for our sadness, Mild, obedient, good as he. And he shareth in our gladness. 4. And our eyes at last shall see him, 6. Not in that poor lowly stable, Through his own redeeming love, With the oxen standing by, For that Child so dear and gentle We shall see him; but in heaven, Is our Lord in heav n above, Set at God s right hand on high; And he leads his children on Where like stars his children crowned To the place where he is gone. All in white shall wait around. C. F. Alexander *CALL TO WORSHIP IN CHRIST S LIGHT THE REVEREND DR. STEPHEN R. MONTGOMERY One: All: One: All: Listen! That God might teach us God s ways. We light these candles for love, hope, peace and joy. We light this candle for Christ s Advent among us. Let us worship in Christ s light.

PROCLAIM GOD S WORD GOD TELLS SINFUL ADAM THAT HE HAS LOST THE LIFE OF PARADISE AND THAT HIS SEED WILL BRUISE THE SERPENT S HEAD GENESIS 3:8 15, THE REVEREND MARGARET BURNETT CHOIR CAROL THE APPLE TREE K. LEE SCOTT (B. 1950) The tree of life my soul hath seen, Laden with fruit and always green: The tree of life my soul hath seen, Laden with fruit and always green: The trees of nature fruitless be, Compared with Christ the apple tree. His beauty doth all things excel: By faith I know, but ne er can tell, His beauty doth all things excel: By faith I know, but ne er can tell, The glory which I now can see In Jesus Christ the apple tree. For happiness I long have sought, And pleasure dearly I have bought: For happiness I long have sought, And pleasure dearly I have bought: I missed of all; but now I see Tis found in Christ the apple tree. I m weary with my former toil, Here I will sit and rest awhile: I m weary with my former toil, Here I will sit and rest awhile: Under the shadow I will be, Of Jesus Christ the apple tree. This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, It keeps my dying faith alive; This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, It keeps my dying faith alive; Which makes my soul in haste to be With Jesus Christ the apple tree. Divine Hymns or Spiritual Songs, compiled by Joshua Smith, 1784

BURNETT CHOIR CAROL I SING OF A MAIDEN PATRICK HADLEY ( ) I sing of a maiden That is makeless; King of all kings To her son she ches. He came all so still Where his mother was, As dew in April That falleth on the grass. He came all so still To his mother s bower, As dew in April That falleth on the flower. 5 LUKE 2:1, 3 7 LUKE TELLS OF THE BIRTH OF JESUS MS. ABEL LAMAR CHOIR CAROL ROUND THE GLORY MANGER AFRICAN AMERICAN SPIRITUAL, ARR. K. LEE SCOTT (B. 1950) They turn way Mary an a Joseph, way from the inn. They laid my pretty little Jesus down in the straw, An that s what made the Glory Manger. An that s what made the Glory Manger. Hallelujah, Lord! Hallelujah, Lord! Wasn t that a right mornin, all round the Glory Manger. Wasn t that a right mornin, all round the Glory Manger. THE ANGELS ANNOUNCE THE BIRTH LUKE 2: 8 14 MS. MONTGOMERY CHOIR CAROL ALL BELLS IN PARADISE JOHN RUTTER (B. 1949) Deep in the cold of winter, Lost in awe and wonder, Darkness and silence were everywhere; Doubting I asked what this sign might be: Softly and clearly, there came through the stillness Christ our Messiah revealed in a stable, a wonderful sound to hear: A marvelous sight to see. All bells in paradise I heard them ring, Sounding in majesty the news that they bring; All bells in paradise I heard them ring, Welcoming our Saviour, born on earth a heavenly King. All bells in paradise I heard them ring: Glory to God on high the angel voices sing. He comes down in peace, a child in humility, The keys to his kingdom belong to the poor; Before him shall kneel the kings with their treasures, gold incense and myrrh. THE WISE MEN ARE LED BY THE STAR TO JESUS MATTHEW 2:1 11 MS. BURNETT CHOIR CAROL HERE IS THE LITTLE DOOR HERBERT HOWELLS ( ) Here is the little door, lift up the latch, oh lift! We need not wander more, but enter with our gift; Our gift of finest gold. Gold that was never bought or sold; Myrrh to be strewn about his bed; Incense in clouds about His head; All for the child that stirs not in His sleep, But holy slumber hold with ass and sheep. Bend low about His bed, For each He has a gift; See how His eyes awake, Lift up your hands, O lift! For gold, He gives a keen-edged sword. (Defend with it thy little Lord!) For incense, smoke of battle red, Myrrh for the honored happy dead; Gifts for His children, terrible and sweet; Touched by such tiny hands, and Oh such tiny feet. Frances Chesterton ( )
6 JOHN UNFOLDS THE MYSTERY OF THE INCARNATION JOHN 1:1, 4 5, 14 MS. ABEL LAMAR *CONGREGATIONAL CAROL NO. 133 O COME, ALL YE FAITHFUL ADESTE FIDELES DEDICATION OF GIFTS AND OFFERING MS. CANDLE-LIGHTING DR. MONTGOMERY Ushers will light the first candles on each row, then the light will be passed down. Please watch children carefully when the candles are lit. CONGREGATIONAL CAROL SILENT NIGHT, HOLY NIGHT! STILLE NACHT 1. Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright round yon virgin mother and child! Holy Infant, so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace. 3. Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love s pure light radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. 2. Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight; glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing Alleluia: Christ the Savior is born; Christ the Savior is born! 4. Silent night, holy night! Wondrous star, lend thy light; with the angels let us sing Alleluia to our King: Christ the Savior is born; Christ the Savior is born.
7 *CONGREGATIONAL CAROL JOY TO THE WORLD ANTIOCH 1. Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her king; let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing. 3. No more let sins and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the ground; he comes to make his blessings flow far as the curse is found, far as the curse is found, far as, far as the curse is found. 2. Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let all their songs employ, while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy. 4. He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love, and wonders of his love, and wonders, wonders of his love.
