2 Deacon Peter Writes: The hymn I have chosen to write about today is the Offertory at the Sung Eucharist (NEH 296) Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour. Although I love the words, if I m honest, I think it s the tune that makes me so fond of this particular hymn. The Holy Communion section of the New English Hymnal is quite extensive; it contains 48 hymns in all. This reflects that fact that the book is often regarded as quite a High Church hymnbook, and in such parishes the Eucharist is always the principal act of public worship. By contrast, the Morning section of the book contains only 7 hymns, reflecting the fact that Mattins is rarely sung in these parishes. Having said that, we don t sing all that many of the 48 Eucharistic hymns at St Andrew s Cathedral. Why? Well the answer is that whilst there is nothing wrong with any of the hymns, many are primarily intended to be sung whilst the faithful are receiving Holy Communion. It is our custom to have no singing during the distribution of Holy Communion, but rather to have some reflective organ music. There are probably only around 12 of the 48 hymns which seem suitable for singing at the Offertory. Of these, Lord enthroned in heavenly splendour is my favourite! The hymn seems particularly appropriate for use during Eastertide, since the last two verses are so clearly Paschal in character and of course there are lots of alleluias! The words were written by George Hugh Bourne ( ). He was educated at Eton College and at Christ Church, Oxford. Following ordination in 1863, he was eventually appointed Sub-dean of Salisbury Cathedral in1887 (equivalent to Rev Sarah s position of Vice-Provost) and as Treasurer and Prebendary of Salisbury Cathedral in Unlike many of the hymns for Holy Communion which focus on remembering how Christ died for us, this hymn also brings in elements of Christmas, Easter and Ascension. Bourne believed fervently in the Real Presence, that Christ is not just present in the bread and wine as the faithful receive Holy Communion, he remains present in the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the tabernacle or aumbry. We should pay our humblest homage to this presence, and should bow to what is present in the aumbry with loving reverence. We don t try and ask how Christ is present, we simply believe he is. It must have been hard for those shepherds visiting the manger at Bethlehem on that first Christmas night to believe that the little baby was truly God but they 2
3 did, for they returned praising and glorifying God for all that they had seen. We should do likewise as we leave church after receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus. Just as Mary cradled Jesus in her arms, we cradle the Risen Lord as the Sacred Host is placed into our hands. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, he cleanses our souls from every stain. As we travel in this earth towards our heavenly home we are fed with Manna and with Blood streaming from the pierced side of the Saviour. We join with the choirs of heaven in singing our alleluias to Jesus risen, ascended, glorified! The magnificent tune St Helen was composed by George Martin ( ). This is the only tune by Martin which appears in our hymn book. It fits the words superbly! The first two lines are to be sung in unison, and then the tune breaks into harmony. Martin even wrote a descant to be sung on the final line of the final verse. These days hymn books rarely given the organist instructions about how a tune is to be played, but this tune is an exception. The organist is told to play the tune Majestically. I am sure that our choir and organist will not disappoint it only remains for the rest of us to do this magnificent hymn justice! NOTICES The Cathedral Café is now open for the 2017 Season. Loyalty Cards are available- buy 4 hot drinks and get your 5 th one FREE. Suspended coffees are also being sold and served- why not gift a hot drink to someone this week? There is an honesty book for borrowing the books. Please do let others know of this great resource. Many of them have been distributed to women across the city and items donated have also been given to men who have found themselves in need of toiletries. Please do continue to collect items for the Bags of Hope. WELCOMERS It is a lovely thing to arrive at a house and have the door opened for you, with a smile of welcome. Would you like to do this for some of the tourists who come to visit the Cathedral during the summer months? What does it involve? only 2 hours voluntary work per week, on a rota, but on a day and time of your choosing. There are pamphlets to give out (in 8 languages) which will answer questions about the history of the building. You just need to be welcoming and point them to these resources if they are interested. For those who would like to welcome but prefer not to have a regular commitment- it would be great to have a team when the cruise liners are in- there is a sign-up sheet for specific days- please do sign up! PARKING Please note that the parking on the Cathedral side of Ardross Street has reverted to coaches only. Please be sure to check if you need a pay and display ticket. Parking in the Cathedral grounds is restricted and parking on or near the grass is not permitted. Thank you for your understanding. Doing this kindness takes little time, but helps people to understand the welcome of God - and practically, it helps people be aware of the Cathedral cafe, gives some quiet security to the building, and it is fascinating to meet the world coming to our own doorstep. If you are interested, please have a chat with Sarah Murray or Heather Gregg,
