1 JULY ! 75 years of SVD Missionary Activity in Ghana Slogan: Knowing, living and sharing the Divine Word Response: we change our world. A WORD FROM THE PROVINCIAL Our Province is presently at that period of the year when there are so many activities taking place at the same time. These range from annual retreats, exits of non-continuing students and entrance of new students into our formation programmes, arrivals and departures for home leaves, professions, priestly ordinations, and so forth. We are grateful to the Almighty God, for His grace that shines through all these various activities. This year, however, we also have the added jubilant occasion of the feverish planning and preparations for the 75 th anniversary of the presence of the SVD in Ghana! We are most grateful to all, both within and outside the Province, individually or in committees, who are working behind the scenes to make the year-long celebration a memorable one. As you may be aware, the 13 th October, 1938 was the exact date the two pioneer SVD missionaries Frs. Alphonse Elsbernd and August Gehring landed on the shores of the then Gold Coast. Thus, we have planned to mark the beginning of the celebration of our SVD Ghana 75th Jubilee Year on this same day this year, that is the 13th of October, There are a series of interesting and joyful programs, events and activities being rolled out to celebrate our great 75th Year Jubilee. I strongly encourage each of you, as individuals and communities to enthusiastically embrace all these planned events, while finding time to also plan to mark these Jubilee events in your own communities and districts. As we mark these 75 years of a milestone, as a Province, it is worthwhile for us as credible SVDs and witnesses of the Divine Word here in Ghana to reflect on what we have each contributed to the spread of the Divine Word in this part of the globe. Has this been a time to be proud of, have we done enough or rather a time to be sorry for? How faithful have we been to the vision of the Founding Generations of the Arnoldus Family, and of the pioneers who sacrificed and laboured so hard here in Ghana to leave us their numerous legacies? Are we able and ready to continue to respond effectively to the signs of our own times while being faithful to the legacies of the pioneers? These are but only some of the questions that should be tickling our minds at this time. One such important question is: Are we on course of becoming self reliant? Surely, the financial support from the Generalate has been dwindling and this trend will continue. It is thus, imperative that we should no longer be thinking about when we should be 'weaned off' from the Generalate's generous support but rather accept maturely that the time is now. What to do, what do we do? To be able to accept this special challenge of financial self-reliance, just as in other matters relating to our religious missionary witnessing, and to accept the sacrifice and hard work that comes along, we all have to continue to answer the all-important question: "Why did I become an SVD, what am I doing to continue to uphold responsibly this calling?" I asked this same question a year ago and I believe it is ever relevant to each of us. A sincere quest for God's voice through prayer and meditation on these issues can help us all reappraise ourselves and help us remain ever faithful to our challenging but fulfilling calling. May we take this opportunity to wish a refreshing time of holidays both for our confreres who went home, as well as the Ghanaian missionaries who are arriving for their holidays. We have also learned of some sorrowful news of bereavement. As we console our bereaved confreres, the prayers and thoughts of the entire Province go to Fr. Julius Keeke who lost his father, Bro. John Lengari, who lost his mother, Fr. Joseph Sakite (PNG) who lost an elder sister, Bro Thaddeus Nyanuba (MOZ) who lost an elder brother and Bishop Kumordji who lost his younger brother. May the Lord God grant them eternal rest. To our nine deacons who would be ordained to the priesthood together with 14 others in Accra on August 17 th ; we can already wish them our fervent prayers and warmest congratulations! The same applies to our 7 confreres and two SSpS sisters 1 who profess their Perpetual Vows around this same period. Fr. George C. Angmor, SVD Acting Provincial

PAGE 3 Brothers Day BLESSED CLEMENTINA NOW A PARISH Some of the Brothers introducing themselves to the congregation The Accra District celebrated this year s Religious Brothers day at the St. Charles Lwanga Parish, Abeka. The celebration coincided with Fathers Day. The Mass was presided over by Fr. Konrad Dreyer, SVD and concelebrated by Fr Mathias Yao King, SVD. In his homily, Bro Pius Agyeman, SVD wishing the fathers a happy Fathers Day challenged them to be responsible heads of their families, living a good, honourable and a trustworthy life that will help in forming, reforming, and transforming the society. He also explained the Religious Brothers Vocation and some of their apostolates to the congregation. He requested parents to pray for more vocation to the Religious life, and people should not hesitate to allow their children to become brothers when they express the desire since it is a call. A section of the congregation with some of the Bros. Other SVDs present were Bros. Emmanuel Affum, McDaniel Acquaah, John Ohene Akuffo, Wisdom Agbovi, Godwin Valentine K. Gatefe; Deacons Gregoire Agbalevon, John Boevi, Edmund Effah Owusu, Paschal Chester; Frts. Alphonse Degla Komi Fahin, Valentin Lissassi, and Rodriguez Ntambwal Ongong. The confreres interacted with the Parishioners after the two Masses. The Blessed Clementina Church, Middle-East- Ashaiman was dedicated unto the Lord on 22 nd June, 2013 when the church celebrated its 25 th anniversary. The Dedication which was performed in a colourful ceremony by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. Charles Gabriel Palmer- Buckle also attracted several priests within the Accra Archdiocese. The Dedication was christened: Through Him, With Him and In Him The Archbishop, consecrating the church to God followed a symbolic ritual which involved the use of water, anointing of the altar, the burying of a relic in the altar, the use of incense, the lighting of the candles, anointing of the 12 crosses in the temple and finally the Eucharist. Going through the six symbols, the Archbishop explained each symbol to the congregation in order for them to understand what dedication of a church means. Most Rev. Charles Palmer Buckle assisted by other priests sprinkled Holy water on all the faithful gathered as well as the temple to signify the cleansing and blessing upon those touched by the holy water. The Relic of St. Rafka (Rebecca) a Lebanese nun who was declared saint by John Paul II was buried in the Altar together with a letter from the Patriarch of Lebanon and authenticated by the Archbishop to confirm its originality. The archbishop called on the faithful to emulate the life of St. Rafka and Blessed Clementina in their faith building in Jesus Christ. As part of the 25 th anniversary, Blessed Clementina Church was raised to a Parish status on Sunday the 23 rd June. At the Mass presided over by Most Rev. Gabriel Kumordji, SVD, Bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Donkorkrom he congratulated all those who have worked tirelessly to bring the church this far. Bishop Kumordji called on the parish to adopt any out-station or an infant catholic community and support it to help them also grow into a parish one day. This would help the growth of the catholic faith and to a larger extent the Catholic Church. To climax it all, Fr. Andrew Quaye-Foli,SVD was installed the Parish Priest. By Regina Asamoah (A Parishioner) By Rev Paschal Chester, SVD.

PAGE 4 The hall currently used as the Church Arnold Janssen Spirituality Centre In November 2010, the property acquired by the Province at Tuba-Krokrobite not only was christened Arnold Janssen Spirituality Centre but has since been developed into a purposeful Spiritual Centre for retreats, recollections, and a growing pastoral community, with a beautiful Chapel: Divine Word Catholic Church under the able leadership of Fr. Joseph Mazur. This was in response to a growing demand for such a Centre as the SVD McCarthy Hill residence, a place for rest and relaxation for retired SVDs was being turned gradually into a Retreat Centre. Besides the Chapel for the Centre, Fr Joseph Mazur through the financial assistance by the Ghana Province and benefactors from Poland successfully constructed a two-bedroom, hall and kitchen house which serves as residence for the Director since June Other Facilities and Pastoral Activity From its very commencement, the Arnold Janssen Spirituality Centre was tasked to develop and nurture in addition to organizing retreats and spiritual exercises, an active local Catholic community that may eventually develop into an autonomous Parish. In view of this, Fr. Straathof the Parish Priest of New Aplaku, a nearby locality, erected a few years earlier, an open shed at the Centre to serve as a place of worship on Sundays for the Catholic faithful from the surrounding local communities. The Director, encouraged by the current good attendance of Mass on Sundays by the local people is renovating and upgrading this shed into a more decent place of worship for the 70 adults and 120 children who regularly attend Sunday Mass at the Centre. Presently, in addition to Sunday Mass, daily Mass also takes place at the Centre and a Holy Hour is organized every Thursday. Further, a Parish Pastoral Council is functioning effectively in assisting the Director in church administration. Both pre-catechumenate and catechumenate programs are organised weekly at the Centre for adults and children alike. 60 children presently participate in the catechumenate program. In 2012 the Archbishop of Accra visited the community and confirmed 14 young people and 3 adults. Workshops to train the teachers of catechumens take place every fortnight and a Bible Study program Life forever also takes place at the Centre regularly. Other pastoral activities that are ongoing are the pre-marriage counselling program for would-be couples. 5 couples have since benefited from this and have been married in the Church. Spiritual Formation Ministry In addition to annual Lenten and advent Recollections, special talks on the SVD mission in Ghana and SVD spirituality are presented to the local Christian community. The traditional catholic devotions Director s Residence such as community rosary in the month of October, and the `stations of the Cross during Lent have been encouraged with good participation by the community. These spiritual activities are facilitated and enhanced with the publication and distribution by Fr. Mazur, the Director, of handy booklets and tracts on Bible stories, Sunday school teaching materials and Catholic devotion. So far, two Religious have used the Centre for their guided retreats and others have used it for their private recollections. The Director does engage in outreach programs like preaching retreats and recollections outside the Centre.

PAGE 5 IMMEDIATE PROJECTS: The Board of the Centre has agreed that the existing foundations laid by Fr. Straathof are used to construct basic facilities like toilets, a dining hall, a kitchen and a store room, as well as classrooms to cater for the groups of people who come to the Centre for retreats, workshops and recollections. The construction of bedrooms for visitors to the Centre is also being considered. The St. Arnold Janssen Spirituality Centre Board of Directors include: Fr. Konrad Dreyer Chairman, Br. Stephen Domelevo, Fr. John Straathof, Fr. Jacobson Dey, Fr. Thomas D Mello and Fr. Joseph Mazur. Fr. Joseph Mazur at Mass in the Divine Word Church Bishop Buckle with the youth Real Challenges in respect of the objective of the Centre The Director presently uses his own prepared programs for retreats and recollections. However, he is willing to learn from confreres who have experience in running such Spirituality Centres to share their practical ideas on possible Spirituality programs and activities that can be used and promoted in such a Centre. Notwithstanding the fact that an Arnold Janssen Spirituality Centre must embrace the totality of SVD spirituality, the Director strongly feels that his special interest in Biblical spirituality will continue to dominate the programs at the Centre until others are developed with the collaboration of other confreres. FOR THE NEAR FUTURE: In conclusion, Fr. Mazur expressed the dream of establishing one day, a Bible school at the Centre and also hopes that the SVD would provide a team of experts in various spirituality fields to help run the Centre, a cherished wish of the Ghana SVD Province. Come and discover the Centre, and have no fear concludes Fr. Joseph Mazur. By Fr. Rex Vegbey, SVD Editor Saint Victor s Major Seminary bid farewell to Fr. Benjamin Asare, SVD Every year the entire Saint Victor s Major Seminary, where the SVD postulants as well as fraters have their philosophical and theological studies respectively, gathers to rejoice for the countless blessings the Lord has showered upon them. It is, indeed, a moment of thanksgiving to the Lord and gratitude to all those who, behind the scenes, work hard to meet the needs of the seminary. This year s gathering, held on the 21 st May, had a special intention: to appreciate and honour Fr. Benjamin Asare, SVD and two others, Frs. Samuel Atinga and Paulinus Mwintome, for their immeasurable selfless sacrifices for the good of the Seminary. The immense contribution of Fr. Benjamin Asare to the seminary as whole has been well noted by many. For many of the SVD postulants, it is like a father and mother who is leaving them. As prefect, he showed himself to be close to all his formandi, taking each one just as he is and helping each one to mature his vocation. The diocesan seminarians who happened to have him for their sermon practice or even in their football team commented on the special attention he always gives to others, his patience as well as his courage and sense of humour. The Rector (middle) presents Fr. Asare (right)with a smock As he leaves for further studies in Belgium, it was the desire of Very Rev. Cletus Kulah, Rector of Saint Victor s Seminary, that he would finish fast and come back to continue the wonderful work he has started. On behalf of the entire seminary a smock and a citation were presented to him by the Rector, Fr. Kulah. Frt. Martin Kotchoffa, SVD

PAGE 6 LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR CHEREPONI YOUTH The participants with the facilitators The youth leaders of the St. Brigid s Parish, Chereponi underwent a leadership training on the 1 st July, Republic Day. All the youth executives from all the stations converged in the main station, Chereponi. The purpose for the programme was to motivate the youth leaders to take up the mantle as executives. It was also to explain to them what it means to be a leader. Some topics discussed were: Leadership both in secular and religious spheres, Different Forms of Leadership, Characteristics of Christian Leadership, Models of Leadership, Theories of Leadership, among many others. FR KOFI SAYS GOOD BYE TO GHANA He was a great missionary. Fr. Ron Lange, SVD spent over 40 years in Ghana working in different places and in various capacities. One great hall mark of Fr. Kofi is his interest in languages. Could you imagine the number of Ghanaian proverbs that Fr. Kofi has compiled? He spent time in compiling proverbs in Twi and in Dabganli. He has motivated many people to translate several prayers into local languages. He encouraged many people in language and culture learning. As if all these were just too little, Ron spent time on his computer typing various documents and information to help the Yendi Diocese and the Divine Word Missionaries in the Yendi District. He spent time to counsel, and he directed many retreats. He was a spiritual director to many young missionaries. In all, there were 46 participants drawn from all the stations of the parish. The resource persons were Fr. Ireneus B. B. Lolan, SVD and Fr. Samuel Yaw Adu, SVD. In a related event, on 29 th June 2013, there was a massive joint Mass Servers interaction at Saboba Parish. The Mass Servers from Saboba visited their counterparts in Chereponi in the past years. So this time, the Chereponi Servers also planned to have a trip to Saboba to interact with their brothers and sisters over there. The activities carried out included the Holy Mass which was celebrated by Fr. Samuel Yaw Adu, SVD, then Volleyball, various in-door and other fun games. At the end of the day, they all acknowledged that it was a spiritfilled and fun when brothers and sisters dwell in unity! Yendi confreres with Fr. Kofi (3 rd from left) Who can forget the personality of Fr. Kofi? He would always invite you for a cup of tea. No one left Kofi Ron s presence without a smile. He would put you in a happy mood. He would do several manual jobs. Carpentry, mechanics and many repairs of all kinds in the Pastoral Centre of Sunson were done by Fr. Kofi. Keep up your good works Fr. Kofi. Thanks for being with us. By Fr. Samuel Adu, SVD Ten novices professed first vows on the 7 th July at Nkwatia-Kwahu. The vows were received by Fr. Andrew Anumu Quaye-Foli. Some of the newly professed share their experiences of the Novitiate THE ESSENCE OF THE NOVITAITE FORMATION The formation of novices usually after two or three years of philosophy studies is not only restricted to the spiritual aspect whereby their whole future life as religious is merely seen outside as reading the Holy Scriptures, reciting the Divine office or the Liturgy of Hours and participating daily in the Eucharist celebration. The formation is indeed more than what has been said above. After all, as future religious, the novices are called or expected by their calling to live and exercise their various ministries among the people of God. Hence they are trained in other areas which can really help them integrate themselves fully into the society. In the Divine Word novitiate for instance, novices are trained not only on the spirituality aspect which is basically the target, but their entire formation includes the

PAGE 7 practice of farming, the raising of animals such as sheep; goats; rabbits and fowls, the baking of bread and some physical exercises like football; volleyball; table tennis. The purpose of the wide vision formation is to help the novices fit into different life circumstances and inculcate in them the spirit of self reliance. Once they become religious, they would have gained certain experiences, acquired certain talents and become creative in diverse ways thereby meeting the needs and expectations of our ever-changing world. Considering the whole formation stages of religious, and keeping in mind the advantages that have been explained, the novitiate formation level can be qualified as a corner stone in the religious journey. Frt. Mana A. Jacques Bidahou THE NOVITIATE SHOCKED ME novitiate is a very good place for you, Emma, to build up your spirituality, said Rev. Deacon Paschal Chester; Emma, as for novitiate, it is a place which you will never forget, it is one year experience and it is once and for all, said Fr. Geoffrey Kamau SVD; Emmanuel, my son, novitiate is like honeymoon for you, I wish you all the best. I will keep you in my prayer. Safe journey to Ghana and take care of yourself, said Mother Superior Sr. Dorothy Fernandez, Carmelite Missionaries. Those are some of the ideas I received before I arrived in the novitiate. Arriving in the novitiate, these are the experiences I faced that make my personality stronger. My Spiritual life: Knowing that it will be the year of prayer, meditation and contemplation, I had already in my mind how I would do it. The challenge came up when I was to wake up at 5:00am in the novitiate for Morning Prayer. I was often late. I remember one day, when still in bed, I heard my brothers sing Veni Creator Spiritus... I was shocked, woke up hurriedly, put on my cassock without even washing my face, and ran to the chapel for prayer. One day, one of the Assistant Novice Directors put this question to me: Emmanuel are you ready to be in the novitiate? it was this question that sent me into a long reflection and made me adjust with haste. In fact, my experience above was not different when it comes to meditation soon after Morning Prayer. This was also very early in the morning and I was not used to it. Before I joined the novitiate, I was not taking my meditation seriously. It was only 15 minutes and I was using that time to finish my school work. Being in the novitiate and meditating for 45 minutes, I was sleeping within these times for almost one and half months before I forced myself to adjust and got used to the situation. From this I learned that sometimes what one tries to escape at one point he may find it compulsory in the next point. Therefore, it is good for me to face what I come across and get used to that experience. Again, I had problem with time management and this was the opportunity for me to grow in life. Indeed, challenges are there for us to face, and lessons to learn especially when it is time for us to start a new experience. Work, especially in the farm, scared me. The place was really bushy that, at the beginning, I was so convinced it was not a farm, but a forest. My surprise was the tools to be used. Instead of a hoe which I was familiar with from Tanzania, I was given panga (cutlass). In fact, I was not used to going to farm so when I was sent to the portion of maize farm on my first day, it was very difficult for me. I was trying, but I was cutting down the maize instead of the weeds and my companions were surprised. After some hours in the farm, I felt so hot that I took off my t-shirt. Observing my way of work in the farm my brothers concluded that I was lazy. I had to try going to the farm for a long time before I got improved. Now I can claim to weed a West African way. From this then, I learned that it is always good to observe and understand the way people behave before we start working with them. In the nutshell, I have come to understand that the novitiate is not just a place for praying, but it involves many things which bring about a total transformation. May God bless all who will pass through our Divine Word Novitiate. By Emmanuel Kimario (Tanzania) SSPS PROFESSION OF PERPETUAL VOWS. 8 PAGE 8 MY 30 DAY RETREAT EXPERIENCE As a postulant at St. Joseph Freinademetz House, Tamale I listened to some brothers from the Common Formation Centre, Tamale shared their 30 day retreat experience they personally had when they were novices. This sharing gave me the urge to wait patiently for my own personal experience. After four weeks of guidance, direction and rigorous spiritual exercises, here I am very enthused to tell my personal story of the 30-day retreat in the novitiate. A week before the start of the retreat I put my room in order to befit a place of prayer by enthroning the bible with a candle and a flower stand. Beside the physical preparation, my spiritual preparation was a prayer of openness to the direction of the spirit and to my retreat guide in order to discern my vocation. As inscribed on a stone in the Novitiate in solitude we find God and self. This particular statement became true in my retreat journey, as I observed maximum silence within, and kept faithful to my prayer hours. I felt within It me became the quietness for me like to pray watching and reflect all my on life my experiences, vocation. Praying the scriptures (Word of God) was the most amazing experience of my retreat and in my life. The scriptural texts became very alive in my life. It became for me like watching all my life experiences with SVD GHANA PROFESSION OF FINAL VOWS 2013 Rev. Germain Mukinisa, SVD Rev. Stephen Agbenorxevi, SVD Rev. Emmanuel Dogble, SVD Rev. Anastasius Osei, SVD Rev. Aures da Silva, SVD Rev. Godwin Fiawoyi, SVD Rev. Géorges Mondo, SVD DATE Thursday 15 th August, 2013 VENUE St. Martin s Senior High School, Adoagyiri, Nsawam both the good and the bad being played on a spiritual screen for me. In addition, I also saw through the scriptural text my future hopes. There were moment when I felt very enthusiastic to read the scriptural text over and over again and other moment when I felt also bored to read the scriptural text. The former was when the text comments on some aspect of my behaviour or a motivating text and the latter was when the text rebukes some aspects of my actions. As a brother shared, he sometimes became afraid to go close to the Bible. I learnt to accept both my strengths and weaknesses in the face of the scriptures and move on with my strengths, as well as to work hard to change some of my weaknesses. My favourite text during the retreat was..unless a wheat grain falls unto the earth and dies, it remain only a single grain. (John12:24-26). It is the dynamics of sowing seeds and I observe it sprout that made a very deep impression in my life. I discerned this text in consonance with my vocation as I saw myself dying to my old self and growing to new life to serve all people and make them happy in the Lord. In a nutshell, the retreat offered me a time of prayer, self-examination, fasting, working and resting. In the retreat was a transforming moment of my life which I really endured and enjoyed all its gifts, fruits and blessings. Frt. Theodore Atsu MAIL From Fr. Emmanuel Anyomi (MAD) Hello my brothers! God being so good I have finished the language course-malagasy. As some of you may have had the experience, this does not mean that I speak or write malagasy fluently. Anyway, I have done my best and entrust the rest to God. Thanks for your prayers. I have started my local holidays. Hopefully, I will start parish work after the holidays. I have been appointed to a place called Anosindrafilo in the diocese of Ambatondrazaka, in the province of Toamasina (Tamatave), Madagascar. Kindly continue to pray for me as I do for you. God bless you all. In malagasy we say 'Tahin'Andriamanitra!' TIME: 09.30
