1 Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church ELW Setting 9 November 13, 2016 Twenty-sixth Sunday after Pentecost 10:45 am Worship Service The end is near. There is no doubt about it. The warnings are dire. The tone of today s texts is ominous. But the baptized know how to live in the meantimes. The baptized are strengthened for the living of these days in word and sacrament. The baptized rally around the invitation of the apostle: Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.

2 Welcome members and guests to our worship service today. If you are visiting, we encourage you to sign the guest register located in the narthex. Please include your home address, address and phone number. Each pew contains cards that you may fill out if you wish to consult with the pastor or provide additional information about yourself. A nursery is available for children up to five years of age during the service. The nursery is located off the hallway on the Huntington Avenue side of the church building. There are also quiet bags available for older children to enjoy during the service. Please ask an usher about borrowing one. Parents are invited to bring children from the nursery for Holy Communion to receive a blessing. If children become restless or noisy during worship, parents are encouraged to take them in to and out of the sanctuary as necessary. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Confession and Forgiveness Pastor: Pastor: People: Pastor: Both our confession of sin and God s promise of mercy are rooted in our baptism. We come before God recalling our brokenness, but even more God s great grace poured out upon us because of Christ Jesus death, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. In the name of God the Father of glory; in the name of God the + Son, our Redeemer; in the name of God the holy and life-giving Spirit. Amen. The Sun of righteousness shall rise with shining beams of healing. Let us gather under the wings of God s mercy. Silence is kept for reflection. Gracious God, we acknowledge that we are sinners and we confess our sins those known to us that burden our hearts, and those unknown to us but seen by you. We know that before you nothing remains hidden, and in you everything is revealed. Free us from the slavery of sin; liberate us from the bondage of guilt; and work in us that which is pleasing in your sight; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. With a heart full of mercy and compassion, God saves us and + forgives us all our sins. Christ, the dawn from on high, shines upon us and by the light of the Holy Spirit guides our feet into the way of peace. Amen. 5 Prayer of the Day This prayer collects the themes from today s Scripture readings. O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without you nothing is strong, nothing is holy. Embrace us with your mercy, that with you as our ruler and guide, we may live through what is temporary without losing what is eternal, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 7 Gospel: Luke 21:5-19 Gospel means good news and refers to the message about God s gracious work in Jesus Christ. The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the 21st chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. As history moves toward God s fulfillment there will be frightening signs and events. Before the end, believers will draw strength from their relationship to God and shall be given the words they need to testify and to endure without fear. When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, [Jesus] said, As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down. They asked him, Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place? And he said, Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, I am he! and, The time is near! Do not go after them. When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately. Then he said to them, Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven. But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Our offerings support the ministries of Christ s church in this congregation, our community, our Virginia Synod, and our E.L.C.A. Offertory Prayer Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. 9 Proper Preface It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Sanctus "Holy, Holy, Holy" echoes the heavenly chorus in Isaiah 6:3 and the crowds of Mark 11:9 as Jesus triumphantly entered Jerusalem. This reminds us that we are in the presence of a God identified both by holiness and humility. Thanksgiving at the Table ELW page 65 The Eucharistic (Thanksgiving) Prayer unites God s creative and redeeming acts throughout history to the work of Jesus Christ. Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. Lord s Prayer When we pray for our daily bread, we are acknowledging that God provides for our needs each day. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

10 At the breaking of the bread, the Presider says, Come to the table. Feast on God s abundant life for you. Agnus Dei The assembly is seated. This canticle echoes John the Baptist's pronouncement in John 1:29 that Jesus is the Passover Lamb of God's people and the Savior of the world. Communion As you receive the bread in your hand, you may commune by intinction using the silver chalice, or you may consume the bread and then drink from the pewter chalice. Sending The blessings and body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. Amen. Post Communion Prayer We give you thanks, shepherding God, that you have gathered your scattered flock again this day, feeding us richly with the food of Paradise. Accompany us as we serve you all the days of our lives, and gather us with the saints in the day of our death; through Jesus Christ,our Redeemer and Lord. Amen. Blessing In this blessing (Numbers 6:24-26), we are reminded that we bear God s name as we depart to live out our baptism, serving our neighbor and spreading the gospel. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Ashokan Farewell Jay Ungar (b. 1946) Postlude O Gott, du frommer Gott, Op. posth. 122, No. 7 Johannes Brahms ( ) Notes on the Music Paul Hindemith composed his Trauermusik (Music of Mourning) in a few hours on a single day in January He had traveled to London to perform his new viola concerto, but the death of King George V on the evening prior to the concert meant that a different kind of music was needed. The concert was cancelled, and Hindemith s new work premiered that same evening in a live radio broadcast. Trauermusik is originally scored for solo viola and string orchestra; its four sections of varying tempi are played without pause. The first section s dotted rhythms place it firmly in the tradition of slow funeral marches. The last uses the Lutheran funeral chorale Vor deinen Thron tret ich (Before your throne I step). As is often the case with hymns, there are several suitable melodies available for a particular text. Therefore, while American audiences may not recognize this particular chorale title, the tune Hindemith uses is none other than Old 100th. The two inner sections feature a lilting melody in compound meter, an effect Hindemith clearly associated with mourning: in his Sonata for Trumpet and Piano, the third movement labeled trauermusik uses the same musical idea. Ken Burns s PBS series The Civil War introduced Ashokan Farewell to the larger American public. Brahms s late set of chorale preludes of which O Gott, du frommer Gott (O God, you faithful God) is a part expresses November s dual liturgical themes: the personal eschatology of our own death and the cosmic eschatology of Christ s return.
