OCTOBER 2017 May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be Loved Everywhere! It is always helpful to wear a Pittsburgh Steelers hat aboard a plane, and one of the stewardesses is from Pittsburgh and is also a Steelers fan. She told another stewardess to make me very comfortable, and if I ask for anything, she should try to get it for me. I was offered an alcoholic beverage but declined because I drink only wine once in a great while. I did ask for more pretzels and received three packs. Tracking back, on the morning of September 26, my superior, Fr. Richard Kennedy, MSC drove me to the Philadelphia airport. Our able maintenance person, Michael Amey road shotgun. Traffic was smooth, except when we neared Philly. I m usually not one of the lucky ones who can walk a short distance to the boarding gate. It s good exercise, but I didn t have much time to connect to the Gate for Palm Springs. It was Gate 26, which was at the very end of the Phoenix airport. In a rush, one of the drivers of those carts quickly boarded me and rushed me to the gate. Upon arriving, there were three persons who came running to the gate. The one mentioned that it was ¾ of a mile from their pevious landing gate. If I walked from where I landed, I realized it would be too late to board the plane. Fr. John Kavcak MSC, pastor of St. Theresa parish, Palm Springs, greeted me at the airport. The city has changed since my visit here three years ago. A lot of building construction is done, including two hotels next to each other on the main street, south of our parish. After supper, John and I visited out MSC brothers Frs. Dave Foxen, MSC pastor of Solitude and Guadalupe Parishes and Juan Pablo Romero, MSC. I came to Palm Springs to prevent a 17-hour flight to Fiji in one day. My thanks and appreciation Dave, John, and Juan Pablo for the great hospitality shown to me during my visit. October 3, I was taxied to Los Angeles for my Fiji Flight from Ontario Airport. The plane left LAX at 11:30 pm. for an 11-hour flight. Unfortunately, there were not interesting movies, and TV shows this time. (sigh) With little sleep I was happy to land at NADI Airport on the morning of October 5. From Nadi I boarded a smaller plan for a ½ hour flight to Suva. Faithful Br. Ioane Kaake, MSC greeted me. We drove to the superior s house, Sacred Heart. The superior, Fr. Tamati Sefo, MSC, and Brs. Tiare Baraniko, MSC, and Sosefo Kikena, MSC welcomed me with Kava in the evening. Fr. Tomati Sefo, MSC Br. Tiare Baraniko, MSC Br. Warren Perrotto, MSC Br. Vikena Sosefo, MSC October 8, I attended Mass with our professed Brothers at the Scholasticate house in Wailuku. After Mass, I m always welcomed to have breakfast with them. (L-R: MSC Brs. T. Kiamin - Ioakim Labeta, - Paul Atu - Deacon Raimon Rataro)
Fr. Patrick, MSC Deacon Rataro, MSC Fr. Teitiaua, MSC Getting coconut milk. Pre-novices: Fetaraisa Popese Tekabang Anterea If our novices wish to have a coconut for juice and a snack, they simply climb the tree and knock some down. I drank the juice before, but here I am tasting the coconut directly from the shell. It was sweet-tasting, but I don t think I would want it on a regular basis. Brother Warren Perrotto, MSC My thanks again to those in the states who donated hard candies, pretzels, and crackers for our community here in Fiji. They were enjoyed by all. Happy Birthday! Fr. Roboti Tebaiuea, MSC Deacon John Fong, MSC Fr. Roboti Tebaiuea, MSC and Br. Sosefo Vikena, MSC
Two volunteers from the Kopling Society of Germany can be seen at the Chevalier Training Centre, assisting in various tasks. Hailing from Nuremberg is Peter Schmitt, and Christian Sierp is from Oshabrück. Both are valuable assets, not just in the classroom, but are active in other school activities. Their most recent project was the completion of building tables for the school s newly constructed dining hall. They fit in quite well within the Fijian culture. They join us at the novitiate house on Wednesday and Friday evenings for our evening meal. They are also present at our Friday Socials. I attend Mass at the Centre on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Sunday mornings. After Mass, on Tuesday and Thursday, Peter, Christian, Br. Aliposo Waqaliti, MSC and I join Fr. Simon, Mani, MSC for dinner. Peter Schmitt and Christian Sierp As some of you may know, Fr. Simione Volavola, was here in Fiji. Fr. Adrian was here to see about providing donations for a water tower. He likewise was returning home to Australia the following day. Br. Warren Perrotto, MSC-Fr. Simione Fr. Simon Mani, MSC Fr. Simone Sr. Merieti, FDNSC - Fr. Adrian Meany, MSC Volavola, MSC Volavola, MSC I had a first-time experience on October 18. I helped to feed the pigs here at our novitiate house. It can be a very tiresome chore for a city-boy. But I managed, with the help of the novices. October 21, the MSC, Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, MSC Sisters, lay members, and friends from Chevalier College, in Kirbati celebrated the 110 th Anniversary of Fr. Chevalier s call to his eternal reward. Our celebration took place at our Sacred Heart Scholasticate, Wailoku. A Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated, presided by Fr. Tamati Sefo, MSC, Pacific Union Superior. Lunch, games, and entertainment followed.
(L-R): Frs. Robati Tebaiuea, MSC- Tamati Sefo, MSC- Beniata Bakatete, MSC,-Simon Mani, MSC Br. Tebweao Antonio, MSC-Mwaati Kanimea- MSC relaxing with friends. FDNSCs and friends of the MSC Ioteba Tokanikai Fr. Lutua Epeli, MSC (center) with Deacon Ramon, MSC (front left), Br. Sosefo Leleivai, MSC Brs. Kabuua Tonganibela,MSC - FDNSC Sisters (back left) Fr. Lutua Epeli, MSC (front right) and friends. Warren Perrotto, MSC October 28, some of us attended a Bazaar at St. Agnes Parish, Suva. The Administrator of the Church is Fr. Lutua Epil, MSC. Selling furniture made by Chevelier Center students Brothers Rui Karotu, MSC and Brother Warren Perrotto, MSC The picture further captures the beauty of this country. I adopted the peak as Mt. Sinai. Others use the same name.
The Minor Birds have a monopoly on Fiji territory. However, occasionally, we come across a different type of bird. Here is a blue bird (don t know the type) that was saved from being our cat s snack. Pre-novice Br. Tadeo Camaitoga managed to save it. It had a broken leg but could still fly. After sitting with us for a short time, it flew away into a tree. We hope it found a safe place to nest. The picture you see at the top-right of this newsletter was sent to me by Br. Michael Angelo Decarlos, MSC from the Filipino Province. Last year on December 8, he wrote to all is friends on Facebook for our names and the year we took our first vows. He sent a similar picture with the individual s name. Hence, you see mine at the top. God to I wish all of you a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving. Let us not forget to give God thanks for all His goodness. This is my first Thanksgiving that I won t be able celebrate; however, I will be thinking of all you. God bless. Brother Warren Perrotto, MSC
