1 THE AMERICAN CATHEDRAL OF THE HOLY TRINITY Episcopal-Anglican THE TWENTY- FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST November 8th, :00 p.m. EVENTIDE AT THE CATHEDRAL Welcome to the American Cathedral in Paris and to our service of Eventide. We begin with quiet, so that we may center ourselves, shed the cares and anxieties of the day and of the week, and intentionally come into God's presence. Please help us preserve an atmosphere of quiet reverence before worship by turning off all mobile phones and refraining from photography and talking upon entering the Cathedral. Both the music and the silence are gifts enabling us to create sacred space and sacred time together. You are invited to sit in the Choir of the Cathedral.

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this life may rest in your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. 3 FIRST READING We Alone - Alice Walker We alone can devalue gold by not caring if it falls or rises in the marketplace. Wherever there is gold there is a chain, you know, and if your chain is gold so much the worse for you. Feathers, shells and sea-shaped stones are all as rare. 4 SECOND READING THE GOSPEL: Mark 12:38-44 Teaching in the temple, Jesus said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows' houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation." He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on." MEDITATION Silence 4

Leader peaceful, Leader Leader That this evening may be holy, good, and That your holy angels may lead us in paths of peace and goodwill, That the work we have done and the people we have met today may bring us closer to you, Leader Leader Leader That we may be forgiven our sins and failures, That we may hear and respond to your call for peace and justice, We pray especially for the ill or those who are in any trouble that you will sustain the faith and hope of those who are ill, lonely, oppressed and anxious, 5

6 Leader We pray for those we love who have died that we may be bound together by your Holy Spirit in the communion of all your saints, entrusting one another and all our life to Christ, As the music begins, everyone who so desires is invited to come forward and light a candle as a visible sign of prayer. As the light of Christ shines in the darkness, so God s love shines into the dark places of the world and of our own hearts. Special thanksgivings, petitions and intercessions are appropriate, as is a wordless lifting of our hearts to God, who knows our needs before we ask. Please sit down when you return to your seat. After the music ends, the priest will continue the service. Please stand. O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, now and forever. From all that you have given us, O God, we offer you bread and wine, and the tangible resources of our lives; And we offer ourselves to you as well, for transformation. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Gracious God, we give you thanks for all that we have and all that we are, gathering in this sacred place to proclaim you as the center of our lives, the one who has brought us to life, who is by our side at all times, and who sustains our very breath in every moment. For this we praise you, joining with prophets and apostles, teachers and martyrs, and all the communities who have celebrated you across generations, joining our voices with theirs in this unending hymn: and Holy, holy holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 7

8 On the night before he died, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, gave it to his friends, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. We who have been made one by Christ and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts of bread and wine. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. Remembering Christ s reconciling work in the world, and offering these gifts, we proclaim the mystery of faith, and Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Open our eyes, loving God, to see your hand at work in the world around us, and let the grace of this communion and gathering make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may serve the world in his healing name. By Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. Amen. 8

The Priest breaks the bread in silence and then says We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. The Gifts of God for the of God. All who are hungry for Christ are invited to communion. Gluten-free communion wafers are available for those who need them. 10 POST COMMUNION PRAYER Said by all Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image and nourishing us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ s Body and Blood. Now send us forth a people, forgiven, healed, renewed; that we may proclaim your love to the world and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. THE BLESSING AND DISMISSAL Thanks be to God. Our celebration continues in the Parish Hall with wine, cheese and other drinks. Please leave the church in silence. The Convocation comprises 9 parishes and several missions. The Convocation is under the authority of the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, whose Bishop Suffragan serves as Bishop-in- Charge of the Convocation. The Bishop-in-Charge is resident in Paris and the Convocation office is located in the Cathedral. The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity serves both as a parish church and as the Cathedral for the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe 13
