Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15:7. Hospitality meant something to Jesus, it was more than common custom. Hospitality showed respect for the visitor, it demonstrated the humility of the host. It avoided the temptation to sneer at the less fortunate or the less moral. Do you have the heart of an Usher? The Social Action Committee and our parishioners have generously supported Rachel's Homeless Women's Services, who provide hot lunches, showers, hygiene products, overnight shelter and counseling to more than 150 women. Please consider bringing the following items on the first Sunday of the month: Women's sanitary products, tooth and hair brushes, Depends, and deodorants. Travel size shampoos, conditioners, toothpaste and Tylenol are also needed. Thank you. SCOUT SUNDAY THIS Sunday, February 4 Our Parish Scouts will be celebrating Scout Sunday at the 9 am Mass in the St. Francis Chapel. Thank you Michael Land for organizing our celebration at Mission San Diego. Big thank you to the Dean Gipson Family. Dean and his wife Lisa organized and cooked the Altar Servers Appreciation Breakfast Sunday with the help of their 8 children. Pancakes and sausage were delicious! Lenten Soup Supper Due to a scheduling conflict the Social Action Committee must cancel the Friday, February 9 dinner at 6:30 PM in the California Room. We ll put it on the schedule for next year. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FISH DINNERS Our Knights of Columbus will start preparing their Fish Dinners on the Fridays of Lent in the California Room following the 5:30 pm Mass and Stations of the Cross. Mark your calendar now for February 16 for a great $10 dinner during Lent. See flyer for details. End-of-Year Contribution Statement The Parish Office is able to track the contributions of registered parishioners who donated by use of their envelopes, checks or direct bank withdrawals and produce a statement of these contributions. If you donated through WeShare, you are able to go to your account online and print a contribution statement ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL (ACA) Each year at this time the Diocese of San Diego invites all of our parishes to participate in the Annual Catholic Appeal. This is our opportunity to support the work of the local church at both the Diocesan and Parish levels. Once again, Mission San Diego has been accessed a goal of $85,000. Thanks to your generosity, we have been able to reach this goal in the past and we are confident that with you help, we will be able to reach our goal this year. If we exceed our goal, that money will come back to the parish and will be used for the ongoing preservation and restoration of the Mission. Fr. Bill Springer and Fr. Billy Zondler, our two wonderful associate pastors, join me in asking for your support this year. The success of this annual appeal is essential to maintain the good work that continues to take place at our Diocesan Offices such as Vocations and Seminary Formation, Religious Education, Support of Catholic Education and Tuition Assistance, Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Family Life Services, Catholic Charities and the Ongoing Education and Formation of Clergy, just to name a few. We ask you to prayerfully consider how you are able to help us reach our goal. Registered parishioners should get in the mail this week a letter from the pastor and a pledge form. For those who do not get it in the mail there will be pledge form/brochures in the pews in church this coming weekend. Return the pledge form to the regular collection on a Sunday or drop it off at the parish office. You may also pledge online at As I am sure you will agree, Mission San Diego is a very special place. All of us who have been entrusted with the care of the Mission consider it a privilege to serve you. 3 Loose Change Collection This Weekend, February 3/4 Benefits Catholic Charities Refugee Center Blood Drive Sunday, February 11 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. In the California Room Donors are advised to drink plenty of fluids prior to donation at this SAC sponsored Blood Drive. Respect Life Month is January and is in remembrance of the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. This was the decision that made abortion legal in the United States. The Church reaches out to women and men for healing and reconciliation with Rachel s Hope Healing Retreats. Due to the severity of the Flu Season this year, we would like to take some precautions during Mass here at Mission San Diego. During the Sign of Peace, we ask that you refrain from shaking hands, simply nod and smile or wave. Please refrain from holding hands during the Our Father as well. And if your are sick please stay home. Eucharistic Ministers will not drink from the cup at Communion time. All holy water fonts will remain empty until the Flu Season passes. Next event is Mardi Gras Swing Dance, Sunday, February 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the California Room here at the Mission. Come dressed in Mardi Gras colors or in swing dance attire! All high school students are invited to attend and bring guests. Permission slips are available through the Youth Office. Cost: $5 to cover snacks and a donation of a new package of socks for the homeless. If you have been baptized in the Catholic Church and have received your First Holy Communion, but for whatever reason never made your Confirmation, you may be interested in this formation process involving formal instruction and faith sharing. 5 TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The stories we ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the selfsacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world.
