Altar Guild Prayer Most gracious Father Who has called me Your child to serve in the prepara7on of Your Altar, so that it may be a suitable place for the offering of Your Body and Blood; Sanc6fy my life and consecrate my hands so that I may worthily handle those Sacred Gi]s which are being offered to You. As I handle holy things, grant that my whole life may be illuminated and blessed by You, in whose honor I prepare them, and grant that the people who shall be blessed by their use, may find their lives drawn closer to Him Whose Body and Blood is our hope and our strength, Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN The Rt. Rev. E. Don Taylor, Vicar Bishop of New York City The Na>onal Altar Guild Associa>on (NAGA) Serve in the prepara6on of Your Altar
The Last Supper "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."
Worship & Sacraments The Book of Common Prayer defines a sacrament as "an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace given unto us, ordained by Christ himself, as a means whereby we receive the same, and a pledge to assure us thereof The sacraments are: Bap6sm Eucharist (also called Communion or Lord s Supper) Confession and absolu6on Holy Matrimony Confirma6on Ordina6on (also called Holy Orders) Anoin6ng of the Sick (also called Healing or Unc6on) Two great sacraments Bap6sm & Communion
What is Communion? It goes by several names: Holy Communion, the Eucharist (which literally means "thanksgiving"), the Lord's Supper, the Divine Liturgy, the Mass and the Great Offertory. It is the sacrament of Christ's body and blood, and the principal act of Chris6an worship. [Weekly] But whatever it s called, this is the family meal for Chris6ans and a foretaste of the heavenly banquet. All people are part of the body of Christ that is the Church and are welcome to receive the bread and wine, and be in communion with God and each other. The Principal Act All are welcome
History of the Altar Guild Altar Guilds, as known to the Episcopal Church, did not become a formalized body un6l the nineteenth century. The history goes back to the 7me of the apostles. In the early days of the Church, followers of Christ gathered in homes to break bread together. By the fourth century, parish ministry had been generally established, and for hundreds of years to follow the ordained clergy referred to as sacristans were responsible for maintaining the items used in worship and the prepara6on for services. By the twen6eth century, Altar Guilds were beginning to be organized and they assumed the decora6on of the Church and prepara6on for Worship. Prepara6on of the church for Worship
What is Altar Guild? We are Not:! Not Priest, ordained or even cer6fied! We do not conduct services (rou6ne ritual) We Are:! People who volunteer to serve and help set the table Qualifica6on: Fail! The only ability God wants from us is our availability Nothing that we can do can make or break the administra6on of the sacraments What follows next is the Lord s Supper, it is for all of God s people All are welcome All are welcome to receive All are welcome to serve
