1 History 101, Sections 1-3 Fall 2017 State University of New York at Stony Brook MW 12:00-12:50, PLUS section meeting Melville W4550 Prof. Sara Lipton Social and Behavioral Sciences N-301 Office Hours: M 2:30 4:00, W 2:00 3:30 or by appointment TA: Spencer Austin Social and Behavioral Sciences S-306 spencer.austin@stonybrook.edu Office Hours: Th 2:30 3:30, F 2:30 3:30 or by appointment History of Europe: Syllabus In this course we shall explore the cultural, social, and political history of Europe and the Mediterranean region from the beginnings of western civilization through the Reformation. The GOALS of the course are to (1) survey the historical and cultural influences that have shaped what are known as western societies; (2) provide practice and training in critical reading of both primary and secondary historical sources. Its desired OUTCOME is to (1) familiarize you with the fundamental background of what is (somewhat inaccurately) known as western civilization and (2) improve your understanding of the basic elements of historical inquiry: formulating questions, gathering, selecting, and interpreting evidence, organizing the results into a coherent whole, and effectively communicating the results to others. Required Books: 1. Joshua Cole and Carol Symes, Western Civilizations: Brief Edition, 4 th edition. Volume 1. Norton, ISBN: James Brophy et al., Perspectives From the Past: Primary Sources in Western Civilization. 6th edition. Volume 1. Norton, ISBN: Requirements for the course consist of class participation (which includes completing the reading assignments, coming to class and section, listening, asking questions, and taking occasional quizzes; about 10% of final grade); five one-page papers to be handed in in your section (about 35% total); one midterm exam (about 25%); and a cumulative final exam (about 30%). All requirements must be completed for a passing grade. Attendance in class and in section is mandatory; failure to attend will seriously affect your grade.

For more comprehensive information on academic integrity, including categories of academic dishonesty please refer to the academic judiciary website at Critical Incident Management: Stony Brook University expects students to respect the rights, privileges, and property of other people. Faculty are required to report to the Office of University Community Standards any disruptive behavior that interrupts their ability to teach, compromises the safety of the learning environment, or inhibits students' ability to learn. Faculty in the HSC Schools and the School of Medicine are required to follow their school-specific procedures. Further information about most academic matters can be found in the Undergraduate Bulletin, the Undergraduate Class Schedule, and the Faculty- Employee Handbook.
