2 Christ is Risen! He is Risen, Indeed! Alleluia! God bless you this Easter. I pray that you know God s presence and the love of Christ that surrounds you. On Easter we celebrate the victory of Jesus Christ. Jesus came into this world to save us from sin, death, and the devil so that we might have hope of eternal life with him. Evil and sin did not have the power to hold him down. Jesus Christ rose from the dead, blowing the doors of death apart, and showing us that he is the great Lord who made heaven and earth. It is this same Jesus who has claimed you in the waters of baptism. The great Savior of the world knows you and would not leave you alone did this because he loves you and chose to save you and I from death. Jesus reminds us in the gospel of John, You didn t choose me but I chose you. (Jn 15:16). Also Jesus reminds us he will never let us go because, It is the will of the Father that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day, (Jn 6:39). I believe that changes everything. We belong to Jesus. He has shown us the days of evil, sin, and destruction are numbered. He is the great Lord of all. Yet, when he comes he sacrifices himself, gives of himself, and pours himself out for the sake of the world. In that he shows us an example of the love that he has for us and for all people. Jesus calls us to follow. We get to follow the Lord who loves and serves and gives of himself. I believe that means that we don t have to live our lives just looking out for number one. By following Jesus, and being led by Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit, we can be a blessing to others. The good news is we don t do it alone. The risen and living Jesus Christ is with us, always until the end of the age, (Mt. 28:20). Jesus is alive and is with you and me now and always. Jesus sends the Holy Spirit which is continually leading, guiding, and shaping us both individually as children of God and corporately as the church and the body of Christ. Christ is with us. Jesus is inviting us to be a part of sharing his love, grace, and mercy with everyone you meet. I give thanks to God for you and for the ways you are already doing that in our Synod. 3 Welcome to St. David's Lutheran Church! We are blessed by your presence and honored that you have chosen to worship with us today. Please take a moment to sign the friendship sheet that is located in the booklet at the end of each pew, near the center aisle. These sheets will be collected with the offering. The Sacrament of Holy Communion is offered to all who are baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit and who recognize the Sacrament as the true body and blood of our Lord. Baptized children are also welcome to the Lord s table at St. David s with the guidance and consent of their parents or guardians. Prayer Requests may be made by placing the request in the small wooden box at the rear, near the doors through which you entered. The acolyte will collect the requests and they will be included during the prayers of the congregation. For your comfort there is a restroom, equipped with a changing table and supplies and a water fountain located upstairs. Simply exit through the double doors back into the narthex. The restroom is straight ahead in the parlor, beside the grandfather clock, and the water fountain is to the right at the beginning of the hallway. Devotional The worship folder you are holding is also a weekly devotional booklet. The prayers and Scripture readings are appropriate for use at any time during the week. The liturgy itself is a Scripturally based order for daily prayer and devotion with Scriptural references noted where they apply. Even the hymns are appropriate tools for prayer and praise. Finally, there is a daily lectionary of Scripture readings for the rest of the week on the last printed page.

4 INTRODUCTION This year may be the one in which John s resurrection account is likely to be chosen over Mark s, perhaps because Mark s gospel ends so abruptly, with astonishment and fear rather than joyful proclamation. Yet Mark may speak to our experience more directly than the other gospels. Corinthians and Acts fill out the story by telling of appearances of the risen Christ. Peter says we ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. And so do we, in a foretaste of the mountaintop feast where death will be no more. THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM Blessed be the holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. Amen. A reading from Second Corinthians: If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! (2 Corinthians 5:17) The leader addresses those who are gathered. Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God s mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

5 GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE In peace let us pray to the Lord. Lord have mercy For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord have mercy. For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord have mercy. For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord have mercy. Help, save, comfort, and defend us gracious Lord. Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray.... O God, you gave your only Son to suffer death on the cross for our redemption, and by his glorious resurrection you delivered us from the power of death. Make us die every day to sin, that we may live with him forever in the joy of the resurrection, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 6 FIRST READING: Acts 10:34 43 A reading from Acts, the 10 th chapter. {Peter's sermon, delivered at the home of Cornelius, a Roman army officer, sums up the essential message of Christianity. Everyone who believes in Jesus, whose life, death, and resurrection fulfilled the words of the prophets, receives forgiveness of sins through his name.} 34Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ he is Lord of all. 37That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." 7 PSALM: 118:1 2, (read responsively) This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. (Ps. 118:24) 1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his mercy endures forever. 2 Let Israel now proclaim, "His mercy endures forever." 14 The LORD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation. 15 There is a sound of exultation and victory in the tents of the righteous: 16 "The right hand of the LORD has triumphed! The right hand of the LORD is exalted! The right hand of the LORD has triumphed!" 17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. 18 The LORD has punished me sorely, but he did not hand me over to death. 19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the LORD. 20 "This is the gate of the LORD; he who is righteous may enter." 21 I will give thanks to you, for you answered me* and have become my salvation. 22 The same stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. 23 This is the LORD's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 On this day the LORD has acted; we will rejoice and be glad in it. 8 SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 A reading from 1 Corinthians the 15 th chapter. {The core of the Christian faith and Paul s preaching is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As the crucified and risen Christ appeared to the earliest of his followers, so we experience the presence of the risen Lord in the preaching of this faith.} 1Now I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, 2through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you unless you have come to believe in vain. 3For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, 4 and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. 9 GOSPEL PROCESSION: Mark 16:1-8 The holy gospel according to Mark the 16 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. {The resurrection of Jesus is announced, and the response is one of terror and amazement.} 1When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint [Jesus body]. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 They had been saying to one another, Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb? 4 When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6 But he said to them, Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you. 8 So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

10 Together we confess our faith: NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen

11 PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION On this day of rejoicing, we pray for the life of the church, the world, and all people in any need. A brief silence. You give life to your church by joining the baptized to the body of Christ. Bless the newly baptized (especially) as we proclaim the one whose death and resurrection makes us one in you. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. You give life to the creation by renewing the earth in every season. Curb our exploitation of natural resources, and cause us to preserve the health of plant and animal habitats. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. You give life to the world by laying a cornerstone among the nations. Rebuild the powers and principalities around us in ways that protect the vulnerable and raise up the lowly. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. You give life to those in need by the anointing of your Holy Spirit. Comfort those who suffer, encourage those who care for the sick, bind up the brokenhearted, and wipe away the tears of all who mourn. We pray especially for.... Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. You give life to this community of faith by infusing us with love for one another. Inspire us to reach out to our neighbors in meaningful ways and bring the joys of community to a wider family of people. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Here other intercessions may be offered. You give life to your saints by setting a banquet table of rich food. Feed us with the bread of life and bring us with all your saints to the feast that has no end. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Into your hands, O God, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Jesus Christ, the spring of new and everlasting life. Amen.

12 PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. The minister and congregation may greet one another in the name of the Lord. Peace be with you. Peace be with you. Please be seated, while the table is set. The assembly stands. OFFERTORY PRAYER Let us pray. Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you shower us with blessings. As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to those in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

13 EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Blessed are you, O God of the universe. Your mercy is everlasting and your faithfulness endures from age to age. Praise to you for creating the heavens and the earth. Praise to you for saving the earth from the waters of the flood. Praise to you for bringing the Israelites safely through the sea. Praise to you for leading your people through the wilderness to the land of milk and honey. Praise to you for the words and deeds of Jesus, your anointed one. Praise to you for the death and resurrection of Christ. Praise to you for your Spirit poured out on all nations. Pour out your Holy Spirit on these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be for us the body and blood of your Son our Lord. Amen, come Lord Jesus. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. With this bread and cup we remember our Lord s passover from death to life as we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

14 O God of resurrection and new life: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us and on these gifts of bread and wine. Bless this feast. Grace our table with your presence. Come, Holy Spirit. Reveal yourself to us in the breaking of the bread. Raise us up as the body of Christ for the world. Breathe new life into us. Send us forth, burning with justice, peace, and love. Come, Holy Spirit. With your holy ones of all times and places, with the earth and all its creatures, with sun and moon and stars, we praise you, O God, blessed and holy Trinity, now and forever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Life-giving God, in the mystery of Christ s resurrection you send light to conquer darkness, water to give new life, and the bread of life to nourish your people. Send us forth as witnesses to your Son s resurrection, that we may show your glory to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen. 17 GOSPEL MESSAGE April 1, 2018 RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD, EASTER DAY This Changes Everything He has been raised, he is not here. These words of the angel standing outside the tomb on Easter morning are perhaps the most glorious ever spoken. He Jesus is not here. He is not in the tomb. He is not dead. He was dead, yes. He was in the tomb, yes. But he is no longer. He has been raised. This is the truth of Easter. But you may wonder what this nice story about Jesus has to do with your life. Trumpets and lilies and white and gold linens, and lavish breakfasts and children all dressed up in their finest church clothes are lovely. But they don t change the diagnosis, or the pink slip, or the dwindling bank account, or the divorce papers. They don t change the reality of harder work for less pay, of addiction to technology, of the endless search for your true identity and real community. No, the accessories of Easter don t change a thing. They are simply ways we often celebrate the message of Easter. It is the message of Easter that Christ is no longer dead, that Christ has been raised and is no longer in the tomb which changes everything. We are promised that in baptism we are buried with Christ and also raised with Christ. Our tombs are empty because his is empty. Whatever evil circumstances come our way however real and present they are have no ultimate power to harm us. Jesus has overcome evil, and therefore so have we. The Easter story of Jesus is important because you are important to Jesus. Where he is, and what he is, you shall be also. He has been raised. You have been raised. Alleluia!
