50 th International Eucharistic Congress The Eucharist: Communion with Christ and with One Another Resources for Primary Schools

50 th International Eucharistic Congress A Festival of Faith Dear Teachers, as you are all aware, this year the 50 th International Eucharistic Congress takes place in Dublin from June Put simply, the Eucharistic Congress is a festival of faith, a way of celebrating who we are and what we do as a Christian people. It may not be possible for many children or indeed teachers to travel to Dublin to participate in this event and because of this I have developed these resources to encourage our schools to hold their own Festival of Faith during this special week. Hopefully, this will help the children to understand some of what is happening at a national level and also make a memory of this important event that children will able to recall in future years. The resources are based on the concept of having a school Festival of Faith, the logo of the Congress and the Patron Saints of the Congress. There is a Prayer Service for use at the beginning and end of the week and a Prayer that can be prayed daily by the class or as whole school activity. The resources are designed to offer you a menu of activities and suggestions that you can dip in and out of as you wish during the week. It might also be useful to talk to your priest about what is happening in the parish during the week and see if the school might be able to participate in some of the parish activities. I hope that you will find these resources useful as you celebrate a Festival of Faith in your classrooms and schools. Maeve Mahon 2

Sacred Spaces in your School All Sacred Spaces in your school this week should reflect the theme of the 50 th International Eucharistic Congress: The Eucharist; Communion with Christ and with One Another. There is a special candle for the International Eucharistic Congress which some schools may already have. If you have one then this will obviously be the centre of your space. If you do not have one of these then you could make one using the template on page 18 of these resources. Use coloured cloths that reflect the colours of the logo of the congress: blue, red, green and orange. Include Bread, wheat, grapes symbols of the Eucharist Names or pictures of children who celebrated First Communion this year Names and or images of the patron saints of the Congress Poster or Banner of the Congress Theme and logo Image of Jesus Christ: you might be able to find the icon of Christ the Teacher which was included in your Catholic Schools Week Pack in 2011 These are just some suggestions for your School or Classroom Sacred Space which can be added to by the staff and children. If you would like to take a photo of your Sacred Space and or any other activities that take place in the school during these days and it to maeve.mahon@kandle.ie then we will put it up on the diocesan website: Display Boards: There are suggestions throughout these resources for creating displays during the days of Congress. 3

Prayer Service to Begin Opening Song: Leader: All: Leader: Congress Hymn: Though We Are Many (Available as MP3 and backing track on This is the Day (Alive-O 4, 6 & 8) Let us begin our prayer by making the sign of our faith. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen This week people from all over the world have gathered in Dublin to celebrate their faith in Jesus Christ. They are praying, singing, listening, talking and sharing in the Bread of Life every day until next Sunday. Today we begin our own Festival of Faith to help us remember that we, too, are people who believe in Jesus Christ and that in our school we try to live and love as Jesus wants us to. During this week we will sing, pray, listen, learn, talk and celebrate the good things about being people who walk in the light that Jesus brings to our world. We are going to begin by lighting our Festival of Faith candle and praying together: Opening Prayer: Prayer for the Days of Congress (page 3) Leader: Let us listen to the Word of God Reader: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 I have already told you what the Lord Jesus did on the night that he was betrayed. And it came from the Lord himself. He took some bread, in his hands. Then after he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body, which is given for you. Eat this and remember. After the meal, Jesus took a cup of wine in his hands and said, This is my blood, and with it God makes a new agreement with you. Drink this and remember me. The Lord meant that when you eat this bread and drink from this cup, you tell about his death until he comes. The Word of the Lord Sing: My Shepherd is the Lord Alive-O 2+6 Leader: In the quiet of our hearts: We ask God to bless all those who love us and all those we love. We place into God s care the people or things that we are worried about. 4

We remember all those who are travelling to Congress this week and pray that they will be filled with God s grace and love We thank God for all the blessings that we receive and especially for the gift of Jesus. Leader: Together we pray a decade of the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary and ask Mary, our Mother, to take care of all those who are in Dublin this week. We pray that they will have a wonderful celebration of their faith and that their prayers may rise like incense before God. Leader The Annunciation: Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be to the Father... Leader: Let us bless the Lord All: Thanks be to God All: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen 5

Prayer for the Days of Congress In our place of prayer this day We make the sign of our faith In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit Loving Jesus, we know that you are with us now. In this quiet moment we welcome you here among us On this day we pray for... Jesus, we know that you love us Show us how to be like you. Help us to follow you in everything we do. When we are afraid or worried Let us remember that you promise to be with us always. Loving Jesus, we give thanks for the gift of this day. we remember and give thanks for... In Communion with Mary our Mother, Through you we offer our praise to the Father, in the Holy Spirit. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Nihil Obstat: Rev. John Cummins, Censor deputatus. 15 May 2012 This is a version, for use with children, of the prayer on the Diocesan Prayer Card that will be given out at all Masses throughout the diocese on June 9/10 to mark the beginning of the 50 th International Eucharistic Congress. It is hoped that teachers will pray it at the beginning of each day of the week in which Congress is taking place. This Prayertime might take place individually in each classroom or as whole school initiative. 6

Brain Storm What is a festival? Different kinds of festivals; religious, music, film, seasons, sports, time of year... How would you know that a festival is taking place? Flags, bunting, posters, balloons, streamers, candles, pictures, face painters, people, music, Make a list of everything you will need to do What kind of things can your class do to show that you are having a Festival of Faith from June 10-17? 7

The Logo of the 50 th International Eucharistic Congress INFORMATION The Congress logo is called People in Communion. The design comes from the idea that people from every nation, race, tribe and language (Rev.7:9) are drawn together in communion as One Body. The IHS in the centre is a shortened form of the Greek word for Jesus Christ, Iesous Christos. Junior Classes To Do Colouring Sheet I am with Christ and He is with Me and all My Friends on page 9. Create a display using these pictures and prayers. Use the Bunting Template on page 10 to make bunting for decorations. Use the Congress colours red, green, blue and yellow Write a Haiku Riddle Poem where the answer to the riddle is one of the following words: Jesus; Communion; Bread of Life; Mass; Love Invite children from another class to see if they can guess the answers. Senior Classes For Discussion: Can you see the people in the logo? How has the designer managed to get across the idea of people coming from every nation, tribe, race and language? Do you think it is a good interpretation of the theme of the Congress: The Eucharist, Communion with Christ and with one Another Can you see Jesus Christ in the logo? How many different ways can you see Jesus in this logo? What kind of logo would you design for this congress? To Do Acrostic Poem Worksheet page 8 Find the quotation, mentioned by the designer of the logo, in your bible. Use the Bunting Template on page 10 to make bunting for decorations. 12 Patron Saints of the 50 th International Eucharistic Congress St Columbanus Fact File He was born around the year 540 He studied and lived in the monastery in Bangor, Co Down until 589 He left Bangor in 589 with twelve friends and travelled by boat to Britain and then to France He founded three monasteries in France; Annegray, Luxeuil and Fountaines He also founded a monastery in Bobbio, Italy He died in 615 St Mary MacKillop Fact File She was born in Melbourne, Australia, in January 1842 She became a teacher and worked as a governess for her uncle s children in a small township called Penola in South Australia In 1886, with the help of the local priest, she set up her first school in an abandoned stable in Penola. Her hope was to educate children whose parents could afford to pay and those whose parents had no money She decided to begin a new religious order of nuns called St Joseph s of the Sacred Heart. Lots of young women came to join her and they set up Catholic schools in the Outback and in towns and cities all over Australia In 1873 she travelled to Rome to ask the Pope s blessing and approval for her religious order. While she was waiting for this to happen she travelled to Ireland. Fifteen young Irish women travelled back to Australia with her to join St Joseph s of the Sacred Heart She died on August She was canonised by Pope Benedict XVI on October She is Australia s first Saint. 12

Patron Saints of the 50 th International Eucharistic Congress Blessed Margaret Ball Fact File Margaret was born in Co Meath about the year 1515 She moved to Dublin when she married the Lord Mayor She lived during the reign of Elizabeth 1 when Catholics in Ireland were not free to practice their faith Margaret s faith was very important to her so she invited priests to say Mass in her home and often gave them a place to hide from the authorities. This was a very dangerous thing to do Margaret s son Walter gave up his Catholic faith to work for Queen Elizabeth in Ireland. He took his job so seriously that he arrested his mother for having Mass in her home and for allowing the Archbishop of Cashel stay with her. Margaret was thrown into the dungeon of Dublin Castle. She refused to promise to give up her faith and her son refused to release her. She spent three years in the cold dark prison She died in She was beatified on September by Blessed John Paul II The Litany of Saints: There is a very old prayer to the saints called the Litany of the Saints. It is one of the oldest prayers in use in the Catholic Church. It can be traced back to the third century. The one we use today was first used in the time of Pope St. Gregory the Great ( ). The prayer begins: Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us. God, the Father of Heaven, have mercy on us. God the Son, Redeemer of the world, have mercy on us. God the Holy Ghost, have mercy on us. Holy Trinity, one God, have mercy on us. Holy Mary, pray for us. Holy Mother of God, pray for us St Peter, pray for us Continue by adding in the Patron Saints of the Congress and any other Saints that you know Finish by praying Glory be to the Father... 13

Feast Days of the Saints Did you know? Just like every child has a birthday every Saint has a Feast Day. A Feast Day is a special day on which we are asked to remember the Saint, give thanks for their life and say a prayer Usually the Feast Day is the day on which the Saint died. But, sometimes that date is not known and then the Church chooses a suitable date. When the Saint is very important, then their Feast Day can also be a holiday. Can you think of a Saint whose Feast Day is a holiday in Ireland? 17

Solve the Clues and Find Out the Feast Days of the Three Patron Saints St Columbanus Only 1 month begins with this letter It is also called the month of the Holy Souls. To find the date add the number of wise men and the number of people crucified on Good Friday then multiply your answer by the number of Gospel books Answer: St Mary MacKillop Two months begins with this letter. It is the month in why we celebrate the Feast of Mary s Assumption into heaven To find the date multiply the number of sacraments by the number of times you celebrate the sacrament of Baptism Answer: Blessed Margaret Ball Only 3 months begin with the same letter Her Feast Day is in the one with the most letters To find the date multiply the number of apostles by the number of times St Peter denied Jesus and subtract half the number of companions who travelled with St Columbanus in his boat from your first answer Answer: 18
