1 St Mark s Currawong NSW, 1919 Isaiah 40:26 Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? The church was consecrated by Bishop Lewis Radford on 11 May, It was the gift of the Robert s family who had settled on the Currawong Creek in the 1830 s. Costing some fifteen hundred pounds to build, this beautiful church stands on a rise overlooking surrounding farm lands. In 1985 the church closed due to poor attendance, but in 1990 the local community rallied around, repairing the church, which was then re-dedicated by Bishop Ian George on 4 November, Regular services are held on the first Sunday of the month and at Christmas and Easter. Architect, Alex North of Tasmania was chosen; he designed a building unique in church architecture for a small country town. The building is 60 feet in length and 22 feet wide with the interior lined with Tasmanian Blue Gum. Burn Bros, of Geelong erected this grand building, employing skilled workmen and the best of material to complete a noteworthy building. The Church was renamed The Church of the Epiphany, and was dedicated by the Archbishop of Melbourne on 14th March The Vicar, Rev d H P Finnis MA and his congregation are to be congratulated on their efforts to rebuild the House of God in such a grand style, and at the completion it was debt free. The 100 year old church continues to serve the community of Meredith. In March 2014 a centenary celebration was held with some 120 in attendance with Bishop Phillip Huggins officiating. JANUARY

A curate from Castlemaine was largely responsible for the growing congregation and active Sunday School. The church was virtually wrecked by a cyclone in November 1901, but was rebuilt using much of the original material. This simple, small grey church, overlooking the centre of Chewton, is a favourite with Anglicans in the area. Its age and connection with the pioneers of the goldfields make it important in the history of white settlement in the area. The church continues to live through the people who still gather here. A service is held weekly and it is regularly used for concerts and musical gatherings. MAY

26 THE LITURGICAL CALENDAR THE CALENDAR The church s liturgical calendar provides a way of commemorating the events of the life of Our Lord and of recording the great doctrines of the faith. The lectionary gives us a systematic way of reading the Bible to provide the basis for these commemorations. There are two major focal points in the Christian year: Christmas and Easter. Each of these events is preceded by a season of preparation and followed by a season of celebration. ADVENT Advent begins the Christian year and is the season of preparation for Christmas. Advent means coming and so the theme of this time is the coming of the Lord in our daily life, at the end of history, and especially in his birth at Bethlehem. CHRISTMAS and EPIPHANY Christmas is the celebration of our Lord s birth, his incarnation, and is followed by Epiphany with its message that he is the Saviour of all people. The Christmas season concludes on the Sunday after Epiphany when we celebrate The Baptism of our Lord. LENT Lent is the period of forty days preparation for Easter. It begins with Ash Wednesday when in some churches ashes (prepared by burning the palms of the previous Palm Sunday) are used to place a mark on people s foreheads as a sign of penitence. Often the spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting and alms giving are used during Lent. HOLY WEEK The last week of Lent is known as Holy Week. It begins with the Sunday of the Passion (Palm Sunday) which has the two themes of our Lord s triumphant entry into Jerusalem and the anticipation of his death. How well this joint message is symbolised by the palm crosses often distributed on this day: the palms of acclamation and the cross of rejection. On Maundy Thursday we commemorate the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist. Good Friday is the day of crucifixion. EASTER Easter Day is the Day of Resurrection, the celebration of our Lord s triumph over death. It begins the Great Fifty Days, the season of Easter. On the fortieth day we celebrate the Ascension, Jesus return to reign eternally with God the Father. The Easter season concludes at Pentecost (Whit Sunday) with a commemoration of the pouring out of the Holy Spirit. The Sunday after Pentecost is Trinity Sunday, celebrating God s Revelation of himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. OTHER TIMES The periods between Epiphany and Lent and between Pentecost and Advent are other times when the themes of our worship emerge from the bible passages set for reading by the lectionary. FESTIVALS (HOLY DAYS) In addition to the seasons of Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter, the calendar provides for the celebration of other events in the life of Jesus and for the commemoration of the saints and martyrs of The Bible and subsequent history of the Church. LITURGICAL COLOURS The changing seasons and festivals are marked by the use of different liturgical colours, reflecting the mood of the season or occasion. WHITE (or gold) signifies purity and the glory of the Lord. It is used for the seasons of Christmas and Easter, for other events in the life of Jesus, (Annunciation, Naming and Circumcision, Presentation in the Temple) and for the festivals of saints other than martyrs. RED is the colour of blood and therefore sacrifice. It is used for occasions recalling the sacrifice of Christ (Sunday of the Passion and Good Friday) and for the festivals of the martyrs. Red is also the colour of fire and so signifies the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. PURPLE (or violet) if the colour of royalty and of austerity. It is appropriate for the seasons of preparation, Advent and Lent. Sometimes blue is used in Advent as a sign of hope. GREEN is the colour of nature and life. It is used when none of the other colours is appropriate. Its use throughout the periods after Epiphany and after Pentecost can remind us of creation and growth of our Christian life. THE LECTIONARY Recent History A lectionary is an ordered system of selected reading from the Bible appointed for liturgical use on specific occasions in the church year and so is closely related to the calendar. A Prayer Book for Australia provides a lectionary on a three-year cycle. A three-year lectionary was introduced into the Anglican Church of Australia as part of An Australian Prayer Book (1978). This followed the Roman Catholic lectionary, first published in 1969, which became widely used by churches of many traditions. A thorough revision has been made by the (international and ecumenical) Consultation on the Common Texts and published as The Revised Common Lectionary in It is this lectionary which is included in A Prayer Book for Australia (1995). CONTENT A lectionary provides three readings and a psalm for each Sunday and major feasts throughout the year. The first reading is from the Old Testament except in the Easter season when it is from the Book of Acts: the second reading is from the New Testament, from an epistle or the Book of Revelation: the third reading is from The Gospel. The lectionary encompasses a three year cycle (Years A, B & C). In year A the Gospel reading is usually from Matthew, in B from Mark and in C from Luke. The Gospel of John is used to supplement the other gospels and provides most of the gospel readings in the Easter Season. Year C began Advent Year A begins Advent Prayer, meditation and worship are the activities around which we build our daily Christian life. This calendar is designed as an educational aid to assist us in planning such activities.

28 Church of the Epiphany Meredith VIC, 1914 St Aidan s Wyandra QLD, 1926 Christ Church Blayney NSW, 1872 Another year and our 25th calendar and an opportunity to showcase 13 of the wonderful and varied Anglican churches from around our vast country. As is always the case we are pleased to include several churches that have been requested by their parishioners. On our travels to obtain calendar stock I meet many amateur photographers and am often asked about the equipment I use. Prior to photography s digital revolution, I used a medium format Rollieflex 6008 roll film camera that took 6cm x 6cm transparencies. The process of obtaining images involved shooting first on Polaroid instant film to confirm composition and exposure, then shooting on transparency film and waiting for a laboratory to process the film. To ensure a good image multiple exposures were taken and the best chosen for printing. This was a laborious and expensive exercise. The early digital cameras could not match the quality of film and it took a few years before cameras arrived on the market that could satisfactorily do this. Some purists argue that this point has still not arrived but I believe that the quality of images on our recent calendars shows that the technology is fine. What is more, it is continuing to evolve and improve. Alongside the development of digital cameras and specially designed lenses there have been huge advances in the software used to edit the images. Initially, with programs like Adobe Photoshop this was a chore but, with the advent of software such as Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, for most photographers editing has become an enjoyable pursuit and enabling the fine tuning of images to suit the current printing technology. I now use a Canon 1DS full frame (21.1 megapixels) digital camera and, almost without exception, a wide angle Canon 24mm shift lens. The exception, used only once, was to use an even wider 17mm shift lens. Shift lens? Most people will have seen photos where the camera has been tilted to include the tops of tall buildings with the verticals in the photos converging towards the top of the image. The shift lens enables the camera to be kept level with the lens shifted up the front face of the camera to include the top of the subject and avoid the distortion. Current digital cameras have incredibly sensitive light meters and superb low light ability. This enables me to photograph the interiors of churches without distracting lights and achieve a more natural look. With the camera fixed to the tripod I can take additional exposures to capture the stained glass windows and then paint these in to the main image using Photoshop. For photographing the small images on the calendar pages I usually use a Panasonic Lumix LX100 camera which is very controllable and which has a built in set of electronic spirit levels so that the subject, such as a stained glass window, is undistorted. We hope you enjoy this 2017 calendar.
