J.M. Neale ( ), alt. music: 16th century German tune adapt. Martin Luther ( ) When Christ s appearing was made known, King Herod trembled for his throne; but he who offers heavenly birth sought not the kingdoms of this earth. The eastern sages saw from far and followed on his guiding star; by light their way to Light they trod, and by their gifts confessed their God. hymn 616 Hail to the Lord s Anointed The Hymnal 1982 #616 tune: Es flog ein kleins Waldvögelein opening acclamation Presider Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Assembly And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Presider There is one Body and one Spirit; Assembly There is one hope in God s call to us; Presider One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; Assembly One God and Father of all. collect of the day Presider The Lord be with you. Assembly And also with you. Presider Let us pray. Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. All Amen. Within the Jordan s sacred flood the heavenly Lamb in meekness stood, that he, to whom no sin was known, might cleanse his people from their own. All glory, Jesus, be to thee for this thy glad epiphany: whom with the Father we adore and Holy Ghost for evermore. 3

4 THE LITURGY OF THE WORD reading Genesis 1:1 5 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, Let there be light ; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Assembly Thanks be to God. psalm Psalm 29 sung by the Choir Anglican chant by Percy Buck ( ) Afferte Domino scribe to the Lord, you gods, * ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his Name; * worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. 3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; * the Lord is upon the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice; * the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor. 5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; * the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon; 6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, * and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire; the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; * the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 8 The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe * and strips the forests bare. 9 And in the temple of the Lord * all are crying, Glory! 10 The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; * the Lord sits enthroned as King for evermore. 11 The Lord shall give strength to his people; * the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. 4

5 reading Acts 19:1 7 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers? They replied, No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. Then he said, Into what then were you baptized? They answered, Into John s baptism. Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus. On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied altogether there were about twelve of them. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Assembly Thanks be to God. John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. Postulant for the Diaconate The Gospel of the Lord. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Presider Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? Assembly I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Presider Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? Assembly I will, with God s help. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. 10 10 Presider We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation: in the calling of Israel to be your people: in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In Him you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In Him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After Supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, according to his command, O Father, All We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory; Presider And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. All A - MEN. the lord s prayer All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
