31 Christmas Appeal 2017 Christmas Appeal The 2016 Chapter Gathering of the Missionaries of Africa reminded us that a principal charism of our Society is Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation. As it happens, I am writing this appeal due to the time scale of the editor and the printers on the 1st of September; the day designated by Pope Francis as a World Day of Prayer for the care of Creation. This is not only an important day for us Missionaries of Africa, but also for all Christians. When Our Saviour, Jesus, was born in Bethlehem, we are told, the heavens themselves sang out his glory. The stars were aligned in such a way that the Wise Men were led to find the Infant God in the stable of Bethlehem. The sheep and oxen were his companions on the bed of straw. Nature, creation itself, is redeemed and sanctified by the birth of Christ. Pope Francis writes in his encyclical Laudato Si; Care for nature is part of a lifestyle which includes the capacity for living together and communion. Jesus reminded us that we have God as our common Father and that this makes us brothers and sisters. Fraternal love can only be gratuitous; it can never be a means of repaying others for what they have done or will do for us. That is why it is possible to love our enemies. This same gratuitousness inspires us to love and accept the wind, the sun and the clouds, even though we cannot control them. In this sense, we can speak of a universal fraternity. By our care for creation in Africa, we White Fathers endeavour to build up the fraternity of the whole human race. We show solidarity with the people of Africa, this continent which seems to be the first victim of the current climatic crisis; where the deserts are expanding, the seasons are disturbed, the crops lay scorched under cloudless skies, water holes and wells are dry and filled with sand and tens of thousands of hungry people are forced to leave their homes and villages in search of life elsewhere. By your Christmas donation you will help us in this mission and will witness to your own gratuitous love for our sisters and brothers in Africa. Thank you for your generosity. May the Son of Mary, who was welcomed into this world by the Nature God created, bless you all. May God bless your families. And may God grant you a very Happy, Holy and Peaceful Christmas.
