1 P K C H (U.S.A.) FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT MARCH 22, 2015 Jesus loves me--this I know, for the Bible tells me so... Anna Bartle Warner A Christ-centered Community Called to Deepen Faith, Serve Others and Foster Fellowship
2 WELCOME TO KIRK IN THE HILLS Welcome to worship We are glad to have you with us today for worship. If this is your first visit to the Kirk, please sign the pew pad. Please introduce yourself to a pastor after worship. About today s service Today is Youth Sunday. The senior high youth of the Kirk will be leading most of our worship on this special morning. Each of our two services will be unique as we have two distinct youth worship teams. Our youth have deepened their faith through years of classroom study, serving others, and the fellowship of our thriving youth groups. Seniors Karolyn Buescher and Tristan Davis will preach today s sermon at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services respectively. The following prayer invites us to prepare our hearts for worship and our lives for faithful living: Almighty God, our Redeemer, in our weakness we have failed to be your messengers of forgiveness and hope. Renew us by your Holy Spirit, that we may follow your commands and proclaim your reign of love through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Reprinted by permission from The Book of Common Worship, Software Edition, 1993, 1995 Westminster John Knox Press.) If you have children Parents concerned about children becoming restless in the sanctuary service are invited to worship in Cedarholm Chapel where there are crib-and baby-chair stands and where you may view either the 9:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. sanctuary service on a large screen. Childcare in the nursery (Abbey 24) is available for infants and children through age 3 from 9:00 a.m.-noon. Please drop off children in the nursery before the service. If you need audio or visual assistance Hearing assistance units, large-print bulletins and hymnals are available upon request from an usher. If you are in need of prayer You may submit prayer requests online at kirkinthehills.org/prayer-request/prayer-request form. Stephen Ministers are available for personal, confidential prayer in Melrose Chapel after each worship service. Melrose Chapel is located on the left-hand side of the pulpit. Join us for fellowship After the 9:00 a.m. service, we encourage worshippers to greet one another as they leave and assist visitors in finding their way to the coffee hour and to one of the Christian education classes. 2 ON THE COVER Photograph is one of open hands of youth of Kirk in the Hills.

About today s hymns MUSIC NOTES While Lift High the Cross was originally wrien in the late nineteenth century it was during the midtwentieth century that it found its way to American shores, appearing in the hymnbooks of all main-line denominations. The text underscores living out the Christian faith as it is grounded and rooted in our baptismal covenant. The tune is a perfect match to the text, emphasizing key words and syllables both through rhythmic emphasis as well by the pitches used in the melodic line; notice in particular how the composer achieves this on the words high, cross, world and adore, to name but a few examples. I Danced in the Morning was wrien in 1963 and comes from the church folk song movement of which its author, Sydney Carter, was a leader. This movement was the religious parallel of the secular folk music movement of the time. The text traces the entire life of Christ from birth to resurrection and ascension, and is a modern day counterpart to similar songs and carols from as far back as the Middle (continued on page 6) 5
6 About today s hymns (continued from page 5) MUSIC NOTES Ages when such songs were used to teach the basic elements of the faith. The tune comes from the Shaker religious movement which originated during an English revival in The name Shaker came from the shaking that occurred during the stress of the spiritual exaltation the members experienced in their meetings. To escape persecution, this movement came to the United States, where its members lived in communities separate from the rest of society. Praise God Our Maker was wrien by Kirk youth Tristan Davis as a school project three years ago. This hymn of praise extends its message vertically in praise of the Triune God and horizontally in calling us to live out the message of the Gospel in our lives. Tune names are often taken from various significant geographical places; such is the case with this tune name. Pre-Service Music and Anthem texts and notes My Voice Shalt Thou Hear Joseph Corfe This anthem is a se(ing of Psalm 5: 3 and Psalm 138: 2. Joseph Corfe was active as a singer and organist during the late eighteenth century, serving at the Chapel Royal and subsequently as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Salisbury Cathedral. My voice shalt thou hear betimes, O Lord Early in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. I will also come unto thine house, And I will worship towards thy holy temple. Every Morning s Sun Sue Ellen Page Sue Ellen Page is Director of Children s Music at Nassau Presbyterian Church, Princeton, New Jersey. She composed this anthem as a tribute to her father, who was also a church musician. Every morning s sun follows every evening s night, And every day I know that it will come. Every day of the year I know it will appear, Even though the clouds may hide it some. Every springtime s bloom follows every winter s cold, And every year I know that it will come. All the trees and flowers need sunshine and showers, And every year they get rain and sun. Everywhere I look I see the work of God, And everywhere all nature calls his name! Everywhere I go in sunshine, wind, or snow, And every year they get rain and sun. Kyrie eleison, from Solemn Mass Louis Vierne Louis Vierne was organist at the Cathedral of Notre Dame, Paris, for thirty seven years. He, along with Charles- Marie Widor (who composed the famous Toccata ) stand as the two leading organist-composers of their time. Both composers are known for writing complete symphonies for the organ, and both composed liturgical works, including large scale se(ings of the ordinary of Mass. The ordinary are the five texts that are said or sung at every communion liturgy in churches of the liturgical tradition. These texts are the Kyrie ( Lord, have mercy, which is sung after the Prayer of Confession), Gloria ( Glory be to God on high ), Creed ( I believe in one God ), Sanctus ( Holy, holy, holy ), and Agnus Dei ( Lamb of God. ) This se(ing of the Kyrie is characterized by a particular strength which certainly heightens the intensity of these prayerful words. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. 6 (continued on page 11)

11 (continued from page 6) MUSIC NOTES I Lift Up Mine Eyes to the Hills Paul Bouman The anthem is a se(ing of Psalm 121. Paul Bouman was a prominent composer and church musician in the Lutheran church in America during the second half of the twentieth century, and composed this anthem for the American Boychoir. I lift up mine eyes to the hills; From where is my help to come? My help comes from the Lord, The maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved, And he who watches over you will not fall asleep. Behold he who keeps watch over Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep; If Ye Love Me Thomas Tallis The anthem is a se(ing of John 14: Thomas Tallis is regarded as one of England s greatest composers, and lived during the time of the English Reformation, though despite the religious fracturing that was taking place he served both the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church, which was no easy task given the political climate. If ye love me, keep my commandments, And I will pray the Father, And he shall give you another comforter, That he may bide with you for ever, Even the spirit of truth. Bound for the Promised Land Early American hymn, arr. Emily Crocker This rugged early American hymn sets a text by Samuel Stenne(, an eighteenth century English pastor of the Baptist/non-conformist tradition. The tune uses only the first five notes of the scale. Emily Crocker is the director of the Milwaukee Children s Choir. On Jordan s stormy banks I stand And cast a wishful eye To Canaan s fair and happy land Where my possessions lie. I am bound for the promised land, I m bound for the promised land. O who will come and go with me, I am bound for the promised land. I Will Arise traditional, arr. Alice Parker and Robert Shaw This anthem is also an arrangement of a traditional American folk hymn. Alice Parker and Robert Shaw composed many such arrangements of American folk songs and hymns for the Robert Shaw Chorale, America s leading professional touring choir during the mid-twentieth century. I will arise and go to Jesus, He will embrace me in his arms, In the arms of my dear Saviour, Oh! there are ten thousand charms. Come, thou fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy grace, Streams of mercy never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. The Lord himself watches over you; The Lord is your shade at your right hand, So that the sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; It is he who shall keep you safe. The Lord shall watch over your going out and your coming in, From this time forth for evermore. There the generous fruits that never fail On trees immortal grow; There rocks and hills and brooks and vales With milk and honey flow. I am bound for the promised land Soon will the Lord my soul prepare For joys beyond the skies. Where never-ceasing pleasures roll And praises never die. I am bound for the promised land Teach me some melodious sonnet Sung by flaming tongues above, Praise the mount, I m fixed upon it, Mount of Thy redeeming love. 11
