Thisdissertationexplorestheartpatronageofasmallgroupofdevout VenetianlaymenacrossfivedecadesuptothepapalInterdictofVenicein1606B 1607.Ittakesanewapproachto,andoffersnewperspectiveson,thiscrucialbut largelyneglectedmomentinthecity sculturalhistory.authorizedbythestateto providespiritualcomfortandassistancetoprisonerscondemnedtodeath,the ScuoladiS.Fantinplayedapivotalroleinboththecity sreligiouslifeandits criminaljusticesystem.publicexecutionwasahighlychoreographedritewith profoundpoliticalandtheologicalmeaning.byrepositioningthebrutalriteof punishmentwithinthecontextofchristianforgiveness,charity,andsalvation,the Scuolasoughttoturnthisspectacleofviolenceintoanopportunityforspiritual transformationforitsmembers,thecondemned,andthebroadercommunity.the confraternity smeetinghousewasbuiltanddecoratedbetween1562and1605,a periodmarkedbyincreasingantagonismbetweenthevenetianrepublicandthe Papacy,andbytheongoingstrugglebetweenCatholicorthodoxyandProtestant theology. Thisstudyofthebuildinganditsdecorationemploysthemethodologiesof arthistory,ritualstudies,anthropology,andculturalhistorytoofferamultibfaceted casestudyonvenetianart,ritual,anddevotion.thethemesandissuesanalyzed include:theinterplaybetweenlocalvisualtraditions,laydevotionalpractices,and thenewaestheticanddoctrinaldemandsofthecatholicreformation;theartistic expressionofcatholicorthodoxyinacityatoddswiththeromanchurch;the defenseofcontestedreligiousdoctrines(especiallypurgatoryandindulgences)in treatisesandinthevisualarts;andtheuseofimagestoeasethetensionbetween statebsanctionedviolenceandthemoralimperativesofchristianity.ultimately,this dissertationshowshowthemembersofoneconfraternityusedartandritualto presentthemselvesandtheircityasembodimentsoforthodoxcatholicism,civic piety,andpatriotisminaperiodfraughtwithreligiousandpoliticalconflict. 1
