2 Introduction Hosted by the Diocese of Wollongong, Lift Up Your hearts is Australia s National Liturgy Conference marking the 50th anniversary of Vatican II s Constitution on Sacred Liturgy. To be held January 2014, the conference comprises a plenary panel, four keynote addresses, five music showcases, forty workshops, and a range of liturgies and resource exhibitions. The conference provides many learning opportunities, uplifting experiences of liturgies and music, and all that Wollongong has to offer in Australia s summertime! Fr Jan Michael Joncas, composer and liturgical theologian, headlines more than thirty speakers at the Lift Up Your Hearts National Liturgy Conference. Other keynote speakers include Archbishop Mark Coleridge, Chair of the Bishops Commission for Liturgy, Ms Louise Campbell, Director of New Zealand s National Liturgy Office and Dr Clare V Johnson, Senior Lecturer in Liturgy and Sacramental Theology at Australian Catholic University. The content is aimed at everyone in our parish and school communities concerned with liturgy and music - clergy and lay, musicians and readers, teachers and catechists, acolytes and communion ministers, liturgy committees and sacristans, pastoral associates and youth ministers, liturgists and architects, RCIA and children s liturgy leaders. Registration EARLY BIRD Registrations available from 27 July to 31 October The conference is using the TryBooking online registration system, which is accessible from Payment is by Visa or Mastercard. Single Day Registrations One day registrations are offered for Thursday (Clergy Focus Stream and Teachers PD Streams), Friday and Saturday (Parish Ministry Focus Streams). 3 Keynote Presentations The keynotes will examine different aspects of the development of liturgy in the fifty years since Vatican II, with a glance to future opportunities for further work. Further details of the keynotes are available on the website Speakers Fr Jan Michael Joncas Fr. Jan Michael Joncas serves as Artist in Residence and Research Fellow in Catholic Studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. He is the author of 5 books and over 200 articles and reviews in journals such as Worship, Ecclesia Orans, and Questions Liturgiques. He has composed and arranged over 300 pieces of liturgical music. Keynote 1: Archbishop Mark Coleridge will present the opening keynote of the conference. Keynote 2: Fr Jan Michael Joncas will present Music in the Liturgy Since Vatican II: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something True. Keynote 3: Dr Clare V Johnson will present Unearthing a Treasure of Inestimable Value: Liturgical Music and the ars celebrandi. Keynote 4: Ms Louise Cambell will present Go, Glorifying God by Your Life. Ms Louise Campbell Louise Campbell is the Director of the National Liturgy office of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference which is based at Pompallier Diocesan Centre. Louise has a passion for the liturgical life of the Church and the capacity of that liturgy to engage, inspire, challenge and transform both personal and ecclesial life. Program Dr Clare V. Johnson Dr. Clare V. Johnson is Senior Lecturer in Liturgical Studies and Sacramental Theology at Australian Catholic University in Strathfield, NSW. She holds honours degrees in Music and Theology and a Ph.D. in Liturgical Studies from the University of Notre Dame, USA. Her research has been published in numerous journals including Worship, Pastoral Music, Liturgy, the Summit, Liturgy News, Pastoral Liturgy and Celebrate! Archbishop Mark Coleridge Archbishop Mark Coleridge is metropolitan archbishop of Brisbane Archdiocese. Mark studied Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. Following his doctoral studies he was appointed Master of Catholic Theological College, Melbourne. He was ordained Auxiliary Bishop for Melbourne (2001) and Archbishop of Canberra- Goulburn (2006). Mark is currently the Chair of the Bishops Commission for Liturgy in Australia. 5 Focus Streams Clergy Focus Day (Thursday) A special stream of keynote and workshops focused on three areas of special interest to all clergy - homiletics, the art of celebration and music. The day begins at 8 am with Mass in the Cathedral, followed by Morning Prayer. At 9:30 am Fr Jan Michael Joncas presents his Keynote on Music in the Liturgy Since Vatican II: Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something True. After morning tea, Rev Patrick O Regan presents his Workshop on Ars Celebrandi: Exploring a Theology and Spirituality of Ministerial Action. During a leisurely lunch, explore the latest resource offerings in liturgy and music at the Conference Expo in St Mary s Main Hall. After lunch Fr Jan Michael Joncas returns to present his Workshop on Exploring Liturgical Preaching: God s Word in Human Voices. Afternoon tea precedes a Taize Liturgy of the Word to finish out the day by 4:30 pm. Parish Liturgical Ministry Focus Day (Saturday) Saturday presents a bumper array of workshops on all aspects of liturgical ministry, including music showcases and workshops on integrating new technologies into liturgy. The day begins with Mass at 8 am. At 9:30 am Ms Louise Campbell presents her inspiring Keynote: Go, Glorifying God by Your Life. After morning tea, participate in one of nine workshops and showcases on offer. During a leisurely lunch, catch up with friends and network with musicians and liturgists from around Australia. Explore the latest resource offerings in liturgy and music at the conference expo in St Mary's Main Hall. After lunch, participate in one of the nine workshops or showcases on offer in the afternoon. Afternoon tea precedes the plenary panel session with Bishop Peter Ingham and the keynote speakers. The concluding prayer finishes at 4:30 pm. A Focus on Inculturation We are fortunate to have five excellent presentations on the topic of inculturation. On the Thursday, in Beakout A, Dr Carmel Pilcher presents Inculturating Liturgy - Is It Still Possible? In Breakout B, Ms Louise Campbell presents Inculturation of the Liturgy: a Sacred Pilgrimage. On the Friday, in Breakout C, Fr John Fitz-Herbert presents We Are Australian: Inculturation, Liturgy and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday. On Saturday, Monica O Brien and Willow present As One Voice Generations - Australian Composers Showcase, and Graeme Mundine presents An Aboriginal Catholic Eastern Rite Inculturation. Teachers, Catechists and Children s Liturgy Focus Day (Thursday) Three streams have been carefully designed for (1) primary music and RE teachers, catechists and children s liturgy leaders; (2) secondary music teachers, RE teachers and liturgy coordinators; (3) primary and secondary RECs. Each stream focuses on upskilling teachers in knowledge of liturgical music and liturgical resources for RE. Presenters include (1) Mr Michael Mangan and Dr Clare Johnson; (2) Mrs Angela Quinn and Ms Fiona Dyball; (3) Pat O Gorman and Beth Riolo, and Sr Judith Foster SGS (see Breakout information for further details). Each stream begins with Fr Jan Michael Joncas Keynote presentation on Music in the Liturgy Since Vatican II. For new scheme teachers wishing to use this day as Teacher Identified Professional Development (PD) for the maintenance of accreditation at professional competence / proficient level, the standards covered during the Thursday focus stream sessions are: Apply knowledge of the content and teaching strategies of the teaching area to develop engaging teaching activities Select and/or create and use a range of resources, including ICT, to engage students in their learning Participate in learning to update knowledge and practice, targeted to professional needs and school and/or system priorities Contribute to collegial discussions and apply constructive feedback from colleagues to improve professional knowledge and practice Participate in professional and community networks and forums to broaden knowledge and improve practice. Australian Pastoral Musicians Network (APMN) The 2013 Annual General Meeting of the Australian Pastoral Musicians Network will be held during the conference. A special breakfast for members of the APMN will be held on Friday morning in the Xavier Centre.
