3 Dear Faithful, Note from Father It's St. John's birthday, the Midsummer feast. The eve of St. John is a big day of feasting in my country, and I had the chance to celebrate it with a mini-bonfire party with the McGinnis family and other friends. It was also an occasion to celebrate the finishing of my board book project, a very long but hopefully a very fruitful project, which will also help Fr. Nkamuke's mission in Nigeria. The date of publication of the book is set to August 16, the feast of St. Joachim and St. Roch. Earlier on the Vigil day I took Jude & Benedict McGinnis to Niles, IL to visit and say the Rosary of the dead at the gravesite of Bp. Francis Slupski, who died last month. As Bishop Dolan wrote after his death, Bp. Slupski did some unfortunate decisions during his episcopal ministry, because of which he was not one of "us", so to speak. But he was a true priest, and a true Bishop, and for the dead we owe the charity of remembering them in our prayers. "For if you love them that love you, what reward shall you have? Do not also the Publicans this? And if you salute your brethren only, what do you more? Do not also the Heathen this? Be you perfect therefore, as also your heavenly Father is perfect." (Matt. 5:46-48) Should we start to pick and choose for whom do we pray, and to who we show charity, we might have a very unpleasant surprise of finding ourselves without helpers on earth, when we'd be in a desperate need of them after our own death. Also, one way of showing charity, is to support our Sisters of Our Lady of Reparation in your prayers and, according to your possibilities, also by financial contributions. These two Sisters, who are losing their convent, do a great work in teaching catechism to our children, cleaning up the church, and praying for our priests. The St. Gertrude the Great School finished its work for summer on the feast of the Sacred Heart. It's an enormous blessing to have a Catholic school for our children, to counter the systematic spiritual destruction of them, known also as "public schools". Still, it's great to be a little bit more "free" for a couple of months. Pray for your priests, who work so tirelessly to bring you to Heaven; and also for the Seminarians, especially our own Thomas Simpson and Anthony Brueggemann, that they would persevere, and in their part ease off a little bit of the workload in the work of saving souls. Yours in Christ and Mary, Fr. Lehtoranta Our Mother Could any human heart have bled like thine To watch men crucify thy Son Divine? Thy courage and thy faith in God alone Sustained thee while our sins he did atone! Thy heart still bleeds when men do sin again And crucify thy Son, their God, in vain; Thy heart is full of sorrow, grief and pain, But, yet, our Mother thou wilt e er remain. -Christie Seneviratne The miraculous picture of is supposed to have been painted on a piece of wood in the 13 th century, but may date back to St. Luke. In the 15 th century it was brought to Rome by a pious merchant and is now venerated in the Church of St. Alphonsus, in charge of the Redemptorist Fathers. The feast was established in 1871 by Pius IX. Of all heavenly patrons, Mary is your most powerful helper before the throne of God. Her dignity of Mother of God her ardent charity, and the fact that Jesus gave her to you as Mother, enable her to obtain for you through her intercession more than all the angels and saints can obtain. When you are in need, remember you have a kind Mother to help you the Mother of Perpetual Help. An Act of Consecration to Most Holy Virgin who, to inspire me with the fullest confidence, hast been willing to take the sweet name of Mother of Perpetual Help, I acknowledge that my sins render me unworthy to be admitted among the number of thy privileged children. Nevertheless, desirous of enjoying thy merciful favor, I cast myself at thy feet and humbly prostrate before thee. I consecrate to thee

4 my understanding, that I may consecrate to thee my tongue, that I may always make use of it to proclaim thy sublime virtues; I consecrate to thee my heart in order that, after God, I may love thee above all things. O my Sovereign Lady, deign to receive me among the number of thy favored children, take me under thy protection, help me in all spiritual and temporal wants, but especially at the hour of my death. O Mother of Perpetual Help, I know that thou lovest me more than I can love myself, therefore I entrust all my interests to thy care; dispose of me according to thy good pleasure. O my Mother, bless me, and by thy powerful intercession support my weakness, so that having been faithful in serving thee during this life, I may praise thee, love thee, and thank thee eternally in the next. Amen. Concerning the Miraculous Medal There is a form of enrolment in the Miraculous Medal approved by the Sacred Congregation of Rites in Rome on 19 April, 1895, for use by the priests of the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians). Persons enrolled according to this solemn form, and becoming members of the Association of the Miraculous Medal, can gain a plenary indulgence 1 st, on the day of reception; 2 nd, at the hour of death; 3 rd, during annual retreat; 4 th, on the first Sunday of the month; 5 th, on the principal feast of Our Lord and of the Blessed Virgin and several other plenary indulgences during the year. Besides they can gain the indulgences attached to the saying of six Our Fathers, six Hail Marys, and six Glorias, in honor of the most Holy Trinity and Our Immaculate Lady, i.e., all the indulgences of Rome, of the Portiuncula, of Jerusalem, and of St. James of Compostella. These indulgences were communicated by a Rescript of Pius X, June 3, The Miraculous Medal and Ejaculation. Those only who wear the Miraculous Medal, duly blessed, can gain 100 days Indulgence every time they say the Ejaculation, O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Pius X, June 6, Those who say the Ejaculation, without wearing the Medal, can gain the Indulgence of 100 days once a day. Leo XIII, March 15, Blessed be the Holy and Immaculate Conception of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. 300 days every time In thy Conception, O Virgin Mary, thou wast immaculate, pray for us the Father, whose Son, Jesus Christ, conceived of the Holy Ghost, thou didst bring forth. 100 days every time. To thee, O Virgin Mother, who wast never defiled with the slightest stain of original or actual sin, I commend and trust the purity of my heart. 100 days once a day. O Mary, who didst enter the world free from stain, do thou obtain for me from God, that I may pass out of it free from sin. 100 days once a day. Blessed be the holy and Immaculate Conception of the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. 100 days each time. Most holy and Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and our Mother, speak on our behalf to the Heart of Jesus, who is thy Son and our Brother. 100 days once a day. Thoughts on the Gospel for the Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist After the places hallowed by the sojourn here below of the Word made Flesh, there is no spot of greater interest for the Christian soul than that wherein were accomplished the events just mentioned in our Gospel. The town in which the Precursor was born is situated about two leagues from Jerusalem, to the west; just as Bethlehem, our Savior s birthplace, is at the same distance southwards from the holy city. Going out by the gate of Jaffa, the pilgrim bound for St. John of the Mountain passes on his way the Greek monastery of Holy Cross, raised on the spot where the trees which formed our Lord s cross were hewn down: then, pursuing his course through the close-set woods of the mountains of Juda, he attains a summit whence he can descry the waters of the Mediterranean. The house of Obed-Edom, which for three months harbored the sacred Ark of the Covenant, stood here, whence a by-

5 path leads by a short cut directly to the place where Mary, the true Ark, dwelt for three happy months in the house of her cousin Elizabeth. Two sanctuaries, distant about a thousand paces one from the other, are sacred to the memory of the two great facts just related to us by St. Luke: in the one, John the Baptist was conceived and born; in the other, the circumcision of the Precursor took place eight days after his birth. The first of these sanctuaries stands on the site of Zachary s town-house; its present form dates from a period anterior to the Crusades. It is a beautiful church with three naves and a cupola, measuring thirty-seven feet in length. The high altar is dedicated to St. Zachary, and another altar, on the right, to St. Elizabeth. On the left, seven marble steps lead to a subterranean chapel hollowed out of the rock, which is identical with the furthermost apartment of the original house: this is the sanctuary of St. John s Nativity. Four lamps glimmer in the darkness of this venerable crypt, whilst six others, suspended beneath the altar-slab itself, throw light on the following inscription engraved upon the marble pavement: Hic Praecursor Domini Natus Est. Let us unite on this day with the devout sons of St. Francis, guardians of those ineffable memories; more fortunate here than at Bethlehem with its sacred grotto, they have not to dispute with schism the homage which they pay in the name of the legitimate bride to the friend of the Bridegroom upon the very spot of his Nativity. Local tradition sets at some distance from this first sanctuary, as we have said, the memorable place where the circumcision of the Precursor was performed. Besides a town-house, Zachary was owner of another more isolated. Elizabeth had retired thither during the first months of her pregnancy, to meditate in silence upon the gift of God. There did the meeting between herself and our Lady on her arrival from Nazareth take place; there the sublime exultation of the infants and their mothers; there the Magnificat proclaimed to heaven that earth henceforth could rival, and even surpass, supernal songs of praise and canticles of love. It was fitting that Zachary s song, the morning canticle, should be first intoned there, where that of evening had ascended like incense of sweetest fragrance. In the account given by ancient pilgrims, it is noticed that there were here two sanctuaries placed one above the other: in the lower one Mary and Elizabeth met; in the upper story of this country-house most of the incidents just set before us by the Church occurred. Mary s Magnificat My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done great things to me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is from generation to generation, to them that fear him. He hath showed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent away empty. He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy. As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and his seed forever. Glory be to the Father, etc days, once a day The Magnificat, especially when sung, is a very powerful protection against the devils. They are the mighty ones whom God put from their seat. They lost to the Humble. Say this prayer often as a sort of exorcism. Fr. McGuire
