PALM SUNDAY YEARS A, B & C READINGS Zechariah 9:9-10 Psalm 24 Philippians 2:5-11 Year A: Matthew 21:1-11 Year B: Mark 11:1-11 Year C: Luke 19:28-40 THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Jesus our Saviour, on this day you were given a hero s welcome as one who was going the way of the crowd; but you had chosen the way of the cross, and the praise was short-lived. Keep before us the vision of our calling, that we may never be diverted from your way, but follow in your footsteps, our crucified and risen Saviour to whom be all glory, laud and honour, this day and for ever more. Amen. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Gracious God, the earthly journey of your Son led him from the way of the crowds to the way of the cross. Through this offering, strengthen us to follow him who died, but who lives and reigns with you and Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Almighty God, we praise you for the acts of love

PALM SUNDAY YEARS A, B & C by which you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ our Saviour. The people of Jerusalem acclaimed Jesus as King with palm branches in their hands, crying, Hosanna in the highest! May we also, carrying these emblems, go forth to meet Christ and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns in glory with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

PALM SUNDAY YEARS A, B & C FIRST READING: Zechariah 9:9-10 A Reading from the Book of Zechariah. Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Look! Your Ruler comes to you, victorious and triumphant, yet humble, riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. This Ruler shall cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the warhorse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be banished. This Ruler shall proclaim peace to the nations, reigning from sea to sea, from the river to the ends of the earth. Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Thanks be to God.

PALM SUNDAY YEARS A, B & C PSALM 24 The earth is God s and all that is in it, the world and all who dwell therein. For it is God who founded it upon the seas and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep. Who can ascend the hill of our God? Who can stand in God s holy place? Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a lie. They shall receive a blessing from God and a just reward from the God of their salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek God, of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors, and our Glorious Saviour shall come in. Who is this Glorious Saviour? Our God, strong and mighty, our God, mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors, and our Glorious Saviour shall come in. Who is this Glorious Saviour? Our God, the God of hosts, this is our Glorious Saviour.

PALM SUNDAY YEARS A, B & C SECOND READING: Philippians 2:5-11 A Reading from the Letter to the Philippians. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ reigns, to the glory of God Almighty. Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Thanks be to God.

PALM SUNDAY YEARS A, B & C GOSPEL READING: Matthew 21:1-11 (Year A) The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory be to Thee, O Lord. God be with you. And also with you. The Good News of Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, 'Our Teacher needs them.' And they will send them immediately." This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, "Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your ruler is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he mounted and rode toward the city. A very large crowd gathered. Some spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees to spread on the road. The crowd, both those ahead of him and those following behind, shouted: "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of our God! Hosanna in the highest heaven!" When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in an uproar, asking, "Who is this?" The crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee." The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to Thee, O Christ. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

PALM SUNDAY YEARS A, B & C GOSPEL READING: Mark 11:1-11 (Year B) The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory be to Thee, O Lord. God be with you. And also with you. The Good News of Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. When the disciples were approaching Jerusalem by way of Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' simply say, 'The Rabbi needs it and will send it back immediately.'" They went and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying that colt?" They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat upon it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then the crowd, both those who went ahead and those who followed behind, began shouting: Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of our God! Blessed is the coming reign of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven! Then Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had seen everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to Thee, O Christ. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

PALM SUNDAY YEARS A, B & C GOSPEL READING: Luke 19:29-40 (Year C) The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory be to Thee, O Lord. God be with you. And also with you. The Good News of Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. When Jesus had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, "Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say this: 'The Rabbi needs it'." So they departed and found it just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" They said, "The Rabbi needs it." Then they brought the colt to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus upon it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying: "Blessed is the One who comes in the name of Our God! Peace in the heavenly places, and glory in the highest!" Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, order your disciples to stop." But he answered, "I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would shout out." The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to Thee, O Christ. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Worship for Palm Sunday April 14, 2019 Holy Week is initiated with this service, which recalls Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. The event, in retrospect, was filled with dark irony. Expecting a political saviour who would rouse the people to overthrow their Roman oppressors, the people greeted Jesus with joy, giving him a hero's welcome to the city. By the end of the week however, disappointed that their expectations would not be met, they would turn against him, gathering as a mob before Pilate to cry: "Crucify him! Crucify him!" 10:30 a.m. THE HOLY EUCHARIST with the LITURGY OF THE PALMS Prelude Welcome and opening announcements Greeting and Opening Prayer (The people stand.) The Reverend Cathy Fulton, Preaching & Presiding The Reverend Charmaine Evans, Deacon Ondrea Mann, Organist and Music Director The Gathering of the Community We gather, greet one another, and prepare for worship. Dear friends in Christ, during the season of Lent we have been preparing for the celebration of our Saviour s death and resurrection. On this day Jesus entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph. The people welcomed him with palms and shouts of praise, but the path before him led to self-giving, suffering, and death. Today we greet him as our King, though his crown is made of thorns and his throne a cross. We follow him this week from the glory of the palms to the glory of the resurrection by way of the dark road of suffering and death. United with him in his sacrifice on the cross, may we share in the power of his resurrection. Let us pray. (Remaining standing, the congregation prays silently.) Assist us mercifully with your help, O God of our salvation, 1

that we may enter with joy into the celebration of those mighty acts whereby you give us new life; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. Processional Hymn: All Glory Laud and Honor Opening Prayer As the Procession of clergy, choir and children makes its way up the main aisle to the chancel steps, the clergy and choir take their seats, the children continue down the side aisles and out to the Excellent Adventure and Nursery. Jesus our Saviour, on this day you were given a hero s welcome as one who was going the way of the crowd; but you had chosen the way of the cross, and the praise was short-lived. Keep before us the vision of our calling, that we may never be diverted from your way, but follow in your footsteps, our crucified and risen Saviour to whom be all glory, laud and honour, this day and for ever more. Amen. The Proclamation of the Word We hear again the Christian story through readings from the Bible. First Reading: Zechariah 9:9-10 read by Gillian Bowles Psalm 24 Following the Reading: Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Thanks be to God. 2 The earth is God's and all that is in it, the world and all who dwell therein. For it is God who founded it upon the seas and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep.

Who can ascend the hill of our God? Who can stand in God's holy place? Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a lie. They shall receive a blessing from God and a just reward from the God of their salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek God, of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; and our Glorious Saviour shall come in. Who is this "Glorious Saviour"? Our God, strong and mighty, our God, mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; and our Glorious Saviour shall come in. Who is this "Glorious Saviour"? Our God, the God of hosts, this is our Glorious Saviour. Second Reading: Philippians 2:5-11 read by Gillian Bowles Following the Reading: Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Thanks be to God. Sequence Hymn: Prepare the Way O Zion blue insert Gospel Reading: Luke 19:28-40 Before the Reading: God be with you. And also with you. The Good News of Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 3

Following the Reading: The Gospel of Christ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Sermon Apostles Creed Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of the People led by Doug McKibbon The Peace Blessed is the One who comes in the name of our God! Blessed is God s reign of peace! God s Peace be with you. And also with you. 4 The people greet one other with a gesture of friendship.

The Celebration of the Eucharist We give thanks for Christ s presence in our midst by which we are spiritually fed. Offertory Hymn: Lift High the Cross blue insert Prayer over the Gifts Gracious God, the earthly journey of your Son led him from the way of the crowds to the way of the cross. Through this offering, strengthen us to follow him who died, but who lives and reigns with you and Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Eucharistic Prayer God be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to God. Let us give thanks to God our Saviour. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks and praise, almighty God, because you accompany us when the path is hard, placing a song of hope in our hearts. When we turn from your way, you do not abandon us. Your Spirit speaks to us as to prophets, sages, and saints in every age, leading us back to you, and renewing our vision of the truth. Joining our voices with those who have gone before, who even now gather round your heavenly throne, we proclaim with them the glory of your name (singing): Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. 5

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy and gracious God, in the fullness of time you sent your Son Jesus Christ, to share our frail humanity. Through his life, death, and resurrection, you call us to a sacred journey from brokenness to wholeness, from fear to trust, from death to life. Drawing away from the crowds, Jesus knew the end was near. Gathering his friends, he took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to them, saying: Take, and eat: this is my body which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup, saying, Drink this, all of you. This is my blood which is shed for you and for many. When you do this, you do it in memory of me. Now we gather at this table in response to his commandment, to share the bread and cup of Christ s undying love, eternal food for the long journey, saying: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Breathe your Spirit into these gifts this bread and this cup and into those who gather in your name these souls and bodies that we may be signs of your hope and ministers of your love along the ragged way. 6 Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory is yours, Eternal God: we bless your name for ever. Amen.

The Lord s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, let us pray (saying): Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread Invitation We break this bread, communion in Christ s body once broken. Let your Church be the wheat which bears its fruit in dying. If we have died with him, we shall live with him; if we hold firm, we shall reign with him. The gifts of God for the People of God. Thanks be to God! Communion (All are welcome to come forward to receive communion, or to receive a blessing.) (please do not dip the bread in the wine) Anthem after Communion: Let the People Shout Hosanna (A. Gartner) Prayer after Communion (by which the Palm Crosses are blessed, the People standing) Almighty God, we praise you for the acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ our Saviour. The people of Jerusalem acclaimed Jesus as King with palm branches in their hands, crying, Hosanna in the highest! 7

Doxology Announcements May we also, carrying these emblems, go forth to meet Christ and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns in glory with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. Prayer for Our Church During the Time of Transition. Dismissal Almighty God, giver of all good gifts, look upon our Christian family of St. Stephen s with grace, and guide the minds of those who lead the process of choosing a new rector for this parish, that we may in God's good time receive a faithful servant who will care for your people and support us in our ministries. Draw us together so that during this time of transition our faith may be deepened and our witness strengthened; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Let us go forth in the name of Christ, to observe a solemn and prayer filled Holy Week. Thanks be to God! Closing Hymn: Ride On, Ride On in Majesty blue insert Postlude Thank you for sharing in our worship today. Following the service you are invited to stay and join us for refreshments. 8
