1 Though we sometimes doubt and often resist God s desire to protect and save us, our God persists. In holy baptism, God s people have been called and gathered into a Godinitiated relationship that will endure. Lent provides the church with a time and a tradition in which to seek the face of the Lord again. 2 Second Sunday in Lent March 17, 2019 Even amid Lent we live in the light of Easter, and every Sabbath celebrates salvation! Welcome to worship, to forgiveness, to everlasting life. PRELUDE Beneath the Cross of Jesus BELL RINGING and ANNOUNCEMENTS CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who gathers us in the wilderness to redeem us, anoint us, and make us new. Amen. In these forty days, let us be honest, confess our sin, and receive God s promise of mercy. Silence is kept for reflection. God at the margins, We have wandered far from your home; again and again, we lose our way. We turn inward, afraid of the world around us. We forget that you have saved your people before and promise to do so again. Do not remember the deeds of our past, but turn our faces toward the future, where your forgiveness is sure, your welcome is clear, and your love overflows. Amen. Like a hen who gathers her chicks, God embraces you in tender care. Like manna in the desert, God feeds you with surprising mercy. Like a loving parent, God runs to meet you again this day, forgiving your sins for the sake of Christ, leading you from death into life. Amen. 3 PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray God of the covenant, in the mystery of the cross you promise everlasting life to the world. Gather all peoples into your arms, and shelter us with your mercy, that we may rejoice in the life we share in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. CHOIR ANTHEM: Senior Choir Come, Come Unto Me FIRST READING Genesis 15:12, The reading is announced: A reading from Genesis, the fifteenth chapter. 1 After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great. 2 But Abram said, O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus? 3 And Abram said, You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir. 4 But the word of the LORD came to him, This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir. 5 He brought him outside and said, Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them. Then he said to him, So shall your descendants be. 6 And he believed the LORD; and the LORD reckoned it to him as righteousness. 7 Then he said to him, I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess. 8 But he said, O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it? 9 He said to him, Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon. 10 He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. 11 And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. 12 As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him. 17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. 18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates. 4 SECOND READING Philippians 3:17-4:1 The reading is announced: A reading from Philippians, the third and fourth chapters. 17 Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us. 18 For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. 19 Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. 21 He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. 4:1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved. 5 GOSPEL Luke 13:31-35 The holy gospel according to St. Luke, the thirteenth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 31 At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to [Jesus,] Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you. 32 He said to them, Go and tell that fox for me, Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. 33 Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem. 34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! 35 See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. 6 NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

7 PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Seeking the grace, mercy, and love of almighty God, we offer our prayers for the church, for people in need, and for all of creation. A brief silence. Compassionate God, call your people to stand firm as citizens of heaven. As we are humbled by your wondrous love, nurture such mercy in our hearts and ministries. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Display your faithfulness to creation in the changing of the seasons. Orchestrate the great song of praise that comes from rivers, birds, mountains, livestock, and wind. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Drown out the terror in the world with acts of lovingkindness and generosity. Release political leaders from pride and fear to act justly and to serve citizens. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Rush to answer those who cry out to you in time of trial especially Dick Brandt, Laura Durham, Arnie Gerken, Margaret Gerken, Albert Junge, Bernadine Meyer, Burdell Schwiebert, Vic Sonnenberg, Carolyn Willford, Larry Dunlap, Peachy Eidenier, Charlotte Grejtak, Osil Jennings, Tom Like, Saylor Rice, Bill Young, and all those we name in our hearts Give shelter to your vulnerable children, and cover them in the comfort of your mothering wings. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Build up your holy community of saints through the work of bishops and missionaries like Patrick, whom we commemorate today. Spread your word through your people for the sake of the world. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Reveal your will as you receive our prayers, and conform our ways to your ways; through the saving work of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you.

Receive our gifts of money, imagination, and labor, and transform them into a feast that welcomes all, in Jesus Christ, our host and our guest. Amen.

9 GREAT THANKSGIVING It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise here the minister continues with the preface of the day, concluding we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

10 WORDS OF INSTITUTION In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. THE LORD S PRAYER Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION Christ has prepared the feast. Come to the table where all are welcomed home.

11 The congregation is seated. Communion is continuous. Communion hymns are on the board in the front of the sanctuary. The blood of Christ, shed for you. and each person may respond Amen. After all have returned to their places: The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace. 12 PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Let us pray Tender and merciful one, at your feast, you fed us who brought nothing, turning our emptiness into joy. Filled with your abundant grace, send us now to be ministers of reconciliation, mending broken hearts, working for justice, and striving for peace among all people, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. BLESSING God, who fills the creation with abundance, Christ, who spreads his arms in forgiveness, Holy Spirit, who draws ever near to us, bless you and bring you to life everlasting. Amen. The congregational constitution requires "active members" to have received communion no less than once a year and to give a contribution of record once a year as well. Through our offering envelopes we are able to confirm the giving requirement. In order to track communions, we are asking that THE FIRST TIME YOU COMMUNE EACH YEAR you fill out a communion card. We only need one each year. Please fill out a card for communion and put it in the offering plate. After you have done it once in the calendar year you do not need to do it again. The April June issue of Portals of Prayer is available in the Narthex. Please pick up your copy. March 31 st is the deadline to direct your Thrivent Choice Dollars. After that, Thrivent will direct your dollars to an organization of their choice on your behalf. We have $130,000 undesignated dollars for Henry County alone. There is a devotional booklet for our Lenten series on the table in the Narthex. Please pick up a copy. The March Door Offering will be received next Sunday for the Filling Home of Mercy.

14 The Luther League will be taking orders for Easter flowers. Please see any L.L. member or fill out the order form on the back of your bulletin and drop it in the offering plate or turn it in to the church office. The deadline to order is March 31 st. We have provided you an additional resource for Lent. They are Lenten Litanies. These brief devotionals may be used individually or as a household and include a set of Bible readings for the week. If you find it hard to give something up for Lent, how about instead taking on an additional discipline? By council action the early service on Easter Sunday will be at 8 am followed by breakfast and an Easter egg hunt. There will be no Sunday School.
