1 Grade 5 Lesson 9 Key Points The Sacraments of Initiation are Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation. Sacred Chrism is perfumed oil used for anointing in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, a priest brings Jesus healing touch to strengthen, comfort, and forgive sins for someone who is very sick or dying. There are four parts to Reconciliation: Contrition, Confession, Penance, and Absolution. 2 [10 min] Invite New Life in Christ (p. 199) Remind the students that we should pray to St. Michael for protection from evil. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Recite the prayer and Scripture passage on page 199. You can let the students use the Youth Bible to practice using the Bible to follow along. [15 min] Discover Sacraments of Initiation (p ) The Sacraments of Initiation are Baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation. Receiving these three Sacraments makes us a full member of the Catholic Church. Students in 8 th grade start preparing for Confirmation. Sacred Chrism is perfumed oil used for anointing in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders. Take the students into Church and have them bring their textbooks. There are three bottles of oil near the holy water font. One of the bottles has perfumed oil. Pass it around for the students to smell. Adults who are not Catholic can be baptized to become members of the Church. They have to go through RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), which is similar to FLAME, but for adults. [5 min] Renewal of Baptismal Promises (p. 206) Read the prayer on page 206. You can stay in Church by the holy water font when reading this prayer. Read John 3:1-21 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do, unless God is with him. Jesus answered him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother s womb and be born? Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born anew. The wind blows where it wills, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know whence it comes or whither it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit. Teach the response I do and read the baptismal promises on page 206. [10 min] Reconciliation and Forgiveness (p ) Read the story of the Prodigal Son. There are four parts to the Sacrament of Reconciliation: o Contrition is being sorry for your sins and wanting to live better. o Confession is telling your sins to a priest. o Penance is an act of reparation to repair the damage done from your sins. o Absolution is God s forgiveness which we receive from the priest s blessing after he hears our confession. All Catholics are required to go confession a least once a year (but it is better to go at least once a month). Show the class where the confessional is (by the upper level entrance of the building). Confession is heard every Saturday morning at 9:30. Discuss: How often do you go to confession? [10 min] A Healing Sacrament (p ) Explain that leprosy is a skin disease that causes ulcers and scabs on a person s skin. It is incurable and very contagious. There a stories in the Bible where Jesus heals lepers. Read about St. Damien and the lepers of Molokai. In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, a priest brings Jesus healing touch to strengthen, comfort, and forgive sins for someone who is very sick or dying. [10 min] Live - Our Catholic Life (p ) Have the students close their eyes while you read the examination of conscience on page 214. Read and discuss St. John Vianney on page 215. o When St. John Vianney heard people s confessions, he could read their hearts and knew if they forgot to confess a particular sin, and he would remind them. o St. John Vianney is the patron saint of parish priests. 3

4 [5 min] Rice Bowls Hand out the rice bowls and help the students fold them. Explain that Lent starts on Ask Wednesday (March 1 st ). This is a special time of year where we prepare for Easter by helping others in need (almsgiving). The money we collect in the rice bowls will go to people who are in need of food. The students should collect money and return their rice bowls to Church in April. [10 min] Sending Litany of the Sacred Heart Pray the Litany of the Sacred Heart (see handout). o This is a special prayer to Jesus that can be said as an act of reparation for our sins. o Students should read the responses in bold. Remind the students to try to memorize some of the prayers they learned this year to get a prize. Remind the students to read through the Family + Faith pages with their parents. 4
