Hymn of Praise Unto God our Savior King s Weston Text: psalm 98, paraphrased Psalter, 1912, alt.; Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams Prayer after Communion Life-giving God, in the mystery of Christ's resurrection you send light to conquer hopelessness, water to give new life, and the bread of life to nourish your people. 5 Glory and thanksgiving be to you, most loving Father, for Christ in whom the world is reconciled. Lifted on the Cross, his suffering and forgiveness spanned the gulf our sins had made. Through that dark struggle death was swallowed up in victory, that life and light might reign. Before he was given up to suffering and death, recalling the night of Israel's release, the night in which the sons of Egypt died, your Chosen One, himself the First-Born, freely offered his life. At supper with his disciples he took bread and offered you thanks. He broke the bread, and gave it to them, saying: "Take, eat. This is my Body: it is broken for you." After supper, he took the cup, he offered you thanks, and gave it to them saying: "Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new covenant; it is poured out for you, and for all, that sins may be forgiven. Do this in remembrance of me." We now obey your Son's command. We recall his blessed passion and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension; and we look for the coming of his Kingdom. Made one with him, we offer you these gifts and with them ourselves, a single, holy, living sacrifice. Hear us, most merciful Father, and send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and this wine, that, overshadowed by his life-giving power, they may be the Body and Blood of your Son, and we may be kindled with the fire of your love and renewed for the service of your Kingdom. Help us, who are baptized into the fellowship of Christ's Body to live and work to your praise and glory; may we grow together in unity and love until at last, in your new creation, we enter into our heritage in the company of Blessed Mary, Blessed Alban, the apostles, and prophets, and of all our brothers and sisters living and departed. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory be to you, Lord of all ages, world without end. AMEN As we join our prayers with those of the Church Universal, Lord Jesus, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray; each in our own hearts, the prayer of your heart Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen We Break the Bread The One who defeated death and injustice is now present in this bread. The One who offers our life promise and hope is now present in this wine. Breaking into our lives and community, we receive new life in Christ. The Collect of the Day O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles 16:9-15 During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him and saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them. We set sail from Troas and took a straight course to Samothrace, the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city for some days. On the sabbath day we went outside the gate by the river, where we supposed there was a place of prayer; and we sat down and spoke to the women who had gathered there. A brief silence follows the lesson A certain woman named Lydia, a worshiper of God, was listening to us; she was from the city of Thyatira and a dealer in purple cloth. The Lord opened her heart to listen eagerly to what was said by Paul. When she and her household were baptized, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come and stay at my home." And she prevailed upon us. For the Word of God in Scripture, For the Word of God among us, For the Word of God within us, We give you thanks, O God. We Share the Gifts of God As you receive the bread and wine it is proper to say amen, which means so be it. Gluten-free wafers are available. 12 5

6 May God be merciful to us and bless us, * show us the light of his countenance and come to us. Let your ways be known upon earth, * your saving health among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God; * let all the peoples praise you. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, * for you judge the peoples with equity and guide all the nations upon earth. Psalm 67 Let the peoples praise you, O God; * let all the peoples praise you. The earth has brought forth her increase; * may God, our own God, give us his blessing. May God give us his blessing, * and may all the ends of the earth stand in awe of him. We Celebrate the Eucharist The Great Thanksgiving: Preface from the Church of England/Episcopal Church of Scotland. Eucharistic prayer from The Scottish Episcopal Church The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Worship and praise belong to you, Author of all being. Your power sustains, your love restores, our broken world. You are unceasingly at work, from chaos bringing order and filling emptiness with life. Christ, raised from the dead, proclaims the dawn of hope. He lives in us that we may walk in light. Your Spirit is fire in us, your breath is power to purge our sin and warm our hearts to love. As children of your redeeming purpose, freed by him who burst from the tomb and opened the gate of life, we offer you our praise, with angels and archangels and the whole company of heaven, singing the hymn of your unending glory: Holy, holy, holy Aidan In the spirit the angel carried me away to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. Its gates will never be shut by day-- and there will be no night there. People will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practices abomination or falsehood, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life. A Reading from the Book of Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. Nothing accursed will be found there any more. But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And there will be no more night; they need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. For the Word of God in Scripture, For the Word of God among us, For the Word of God within us, We give you thanks, O God. 6 11

7 We Prepare the Table Receive, O God, not only our gifts of money but our heart-felt commitments to a more generous and equitable world. In the receiving, grant us your blessing and courage for the living in Jesus way. Let us greet the Gospel of Christ by singing O Christ the healer Words: Fred Pratt Green (b. 1903); Music: Erhalt uns Herr, melody from Geistliche Lieder, 1543 Offertory Hymn Heal me hands of Jesus Sharpe The offerings of the people are brought forward Words: Michael Perry (b. ); Music: Carl Haywood (b. 1949) 10 7

8 The Holy Gospel The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John 5:1-9 Glory to you, O Christ After Jesus healed the son of the official in Capernaum, there was a festival of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called in Hebrew Beth-zatha, which has five porticoes. In these lay many invalids-- blind, lame, and paralyzed. One man was there who had been ill for thirtyeight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be made well?" The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; and while I am making my way, someone else steps down ahead of me." Jesus said to him, "Stand up, take your mat and walk." At once the man was made well, and he took up his mat and began to walk. Now that day was a sabbath. The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ. The Sermon The Rev. Gigi Conner We Affirm Our Faith The prayer of affirmation is from Enriching Our Worship The Episcopal Church and is closer to the original translation from the Greek. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen We Pray for the Church and the World As the light of a new day surrounds us, let the sun s warmth gather us as we offer our prayers for God s grace and healing, for those on our hearts and minds, for nations that are living in turmoil, for our diocese, and for this faith community. We pray for this gathering and for all the people in their daily life and work. We pray for the young and the elderly, for families, and all who are alone. We pray for the renewal of the Church in faith, love and service. We pray for our leaders and for the life of this faith community. We give thanks for the gift of your word, the grace of the sacraments, and the fellowship of your people. God of all creation, there is no pain in our hearts or in our planet that you do not know. Teach us to grieve with you, O God, the loss of all that is being killed. O God our creator, in your great kindness, look upon our brothers and sisters suffering in war or disaster. We also remember those we love, yet see no more. Comfort those who are grieving and be with them in their pain. We pray to be set free from the bitterness of memories, the power of the past to control the present, from any deep wounds we have received or given, from contempt of others or the mis-use of god s creation. Heal us from the corroding effects of human apathy and betrayal; draw out of us your goodness which renews humankind. We pray for those who are in need: for the sick, sorrowful and bereaved. We pray for all who bring comfort, care and healing. We give thanks for human love and friendship and for all that enriches our daily lives. Give to us, O God, a vision of your kingdom, a glimpse of your glory, an openness to your rule, and your spirit to guide us. Hear us, we pray, through Christ, the risen one. Amen. May the Lord bless us and keep us; may the Lord s face shine on us and be gracious to us; And may the Lord face toward us and give us peace. Amen. We Exchange the Peace The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 8 9
