2 Editorial Editorial I had it all planned out; I had plenty of publish-able articles, photographs; all that I needed, when the cry went out STOP PRESS we have to re-do everything again for the Year of Grace. Disappointed; definitely not; rather, I am excited, for although it means a lot more work, in my experience God often comes to us at the most inconvenient times and ways. When I was in the Seminary we had a visit from internationally renown theologian, Piet Franzen S.J. whose specialty was grace. I remember him saying that grace is nothing less than the living loving presence of God in our lives. At a celebration of first communion, last year, it hit me between the eyes God had waited since time began, to come into the lives of these children in this unique manner. It is the same God who created the universe, and all that it holds. Can you think of what this means for each of us? It leaves me in wonder from the Bishop s Diary April 10th 12th Opening speaker Catholic Secondary Principals of Australia Conference - Canberra 14th & 15th Visitation to Quorn and Hawker parishes 17th Centacare Catholic Board Meeting Port Pirie St Joseph s Board Meeting 18th Opening and Blessing of Ceduna Safe House Ceduna 21st Priestly ordination of Deacon David Braithwaite SJ Sydney 23rd 27th Bishop s Retreat 28th & 29th Visitation to Snowtown and Port Broughton parishes 29th & 30th Meeting of Jesuit Schools Commission Sevenhill May 1st & 2nd Australian Catholic Media Congress Sydney 3rd Chair, Bishops Commission for Catholic Education Meeting Sydney I recall once at a funeral, saying something to the effect that, Fred didn t see the inside of a church too often, perhaps because we have disfigured the world so much, that the face of God is no longer easily seen anymore. If this is true of the world, it can also be said, in part at least, of the Church: we have much to, not simply apologise for, but ask forgiveness for. This Year of the living loving presence of God in our lives, is the call for all of us to show the face of our God to, and in, our world; to become the living Gospel ; to love passionately, and allow ourselves to be loved by our God as well as by others. As St. John tells us in his first letter [1 John 4: 9-10],. this is the love I mean: not our love for God, but Gods love for us. This Year of grace is a call to drown in the ocean of God s love for us. If we can live this love with just some of the passion it means, then our own lives, and our world will be transfigured. Fr. 3 Bishop s Message 3 The Church in Australia is taking a significant step in declaring, through its Bishops, this Year of Grace. The Year goes from Pentecost 2012 to Pentecost It overlaps to some degree the Year of Faith declared by the Holy Father, but both Years have the same hope and purpose. It is not often that the Bishops of Australia take such a step as declaring a special Year. Why this time? What does the word Grace mean? The word Grace (whose Greek form is Charis) is used throughout Scripture, and especially by St Paul who employs the word more than one hundred times. There are books and articles galore written about it by learned theologians. A definition that makes sense to me is the fairly simple one, God s love moving and working within us. In St John s Gospel Jesus says that He and the Father will come and abide within us. The indwelling of God in His creatures is what was meant by the term Sanctifying Grace. Think of the wonder of it! We have the presence of God within us, when our hearts are not clouded by sin. So when we pray Hail Mary, full of grace it means that Mary was so attuned to the presence of God in her life that His love filled her totally, and moved her to make that wondrous statement of Yes to become the mother of the Lord of All. When we pray that we might have the grace to endure something, or live a vow properly, or whatever, it is a way of praying that the love of God within us will strengthen us and move us to live our life in that proper way. For the Church in Australia then, the Year of Grace means a prayer that the love of God will work within and move greatly the hearts of all in our Church. Move us back to Christ, move us to opening our hearts again to receive Him and know Him, and live His love as Church. It is a type of year s retreat for the Church. The Australian Bishops in Conference do attempt to grapple with the huge issues that confront us as Church. There is indifferentism to religion; there are forces in society moving warped understandings of basic covenants such as marriage and sacredness of life; there are the declining numbers in our congregations, and a decrease in those for whom Sunday Eucharist is a special part of their lives; most grievously, we seem to see a disengagement of vast numbers of our young people from the worshipping Church, even though our schools are full; there is what is described as the devastating tsunami of sexual abuse cases that has reaped so much hurt and damage to individual lives and to the name of the Church; many women feel alienated from the Church not just because of issues such as ordination, but by the reinforcement of heavily male language in the Liturgy, and so on; there is the difficulty of providing Eucharist for many of our parish communities, especially in rural dioceses like ours. How can the Australian Bishops, a bunch of thirty-eight or so men, hope to tackle such an array of issues facing the Australian Church? There was a proposal that we organise a major ecclesial event for the life of the Church in Australia, and a suggestion by Archbishop Wilson as President of the Bishops Conference was to hold a Plenary Council. There have been a few of these in the history of the Church in Australia, but not for many decades. The difficulty with a Plenary Council is that it is also a legislative body, can make laws for the Church, and that was not quite what the Bishops wanted. We need a turning of the soil, an imagining of the future, a revitalisation of the heart of the Church, and a Plenary Council might follow that. Looking at the pile of documents the Bishops have to discuss, one asked, what is this to do with the person of Jesus in our lives? As a question it shook us up. We can become so engaged in organising programmes, arranging celebrations, working at right order being followed, that we can sometimes forget why, and forget the One for whom we are doing this. We need as Church in Australia to haul off and contemplate the face of Christ, to see where He is in our hearts and in our lives. For many in our country Jesus has become simply a good figure of history, a man to be admired and His teachings are beautiful but nothing more than that. Yet we have the Incarnation, the Word becoming flesh, at the heart of our Christian understanding. This is one of the reasons that in the schools of our diocese I have instructed that the Angelus be reintroduced, so that basic belief in the Divinity of Christ is reinforced among the faithful, that the Word became flesh and dwelt amongst us. We will not thrive as a Church unless we have these movements of grace and holiness to strengthen us. One Bishop put it that we need a new surge of Gospel energy, a new movement of evangelization. Only Christ can bring that to us. So for a year we will try to take our Lord more seriously in our daily lives, and pay attention to how He wishes to dwell within us and move the hearts that He has made, and which He has called to follow Him. May this year of retreat for the Church in Australia be very graced. Bishop Greg O Kelly SJ The Year of Grace A Time for Hope and Rediscovery

4 Riverland Assembly The Catholic Parishes of the Riverland had there inaugural Assembly at Berry on March 4th. This Assembly represented almost two years of planning by the Riverland Forum, a group comprising of key leaders of the local Catholic community. This gathering was facilitated by the Diocesan Director of Faith Formation, Sr. Sonia Wagner, SGS and Assistant Director of Catholic Education in the Diocese, Mr. Michael Preece. Bishop Greg O Kelly was a participant. Taking out lead from the Diocesan Pastoral Council, the Forum reflected on, and planned for a preferred future for Pastoral Care in the Riverland: it is a future filled with hope. Most importantly the Assembly reflected in a group setting on the method developed by Joseph (Card.) Cardijn the see, judge and act method of the Y.C.W. Movement. The six critical areas are seen to be: National Program for the Year of Grace The Year of Grace will begin throughout Australia with Masses and liturgies on Pentecost Sunday, May 27th and continue throughout 2012 and 2013 until All Saints Day, November 1. The conclusion of the Year of Grace has been extended to coincide with the end of the Year of Faith being celebrated by the Church throughout the world in parallel with the Australian celebrations. During Lent 2013 we will be participating in a national Lenten program with discussion sessions focused on the theme of Grace. The Fifth Sunday of Lent, March 17th has been designated as a time for Bringing our Wounds to Jesus a [1] Sunday Mass location, numbers and opportunities for bringing new life to the Sunday Eucharist. [2] Re-engaging with young adults and their families [3] Pastoral Care in the Riverland Catholic Community including the care of our Mass-going Catholics, those who are infrequent, and those who do not connect with the worshipping community: care of the poor and marginalized, our indigenous brothers and sisters: seniors and the prisoners at the Cadell Training Centre. [4] Parish administration [5] Nurturing and strengthening of the Parish - School partnership [6] The relevance of the Church in the wider Riverland community Celebration of Repentance where we will all participate in a liturgy of repentance and healing. Some of the particular emphases for the Year of Grace will be prayer ( such as personal, family, parish, liturgical, home, retreat)opening up the Word of God in the Scriptures and rediscovering our relationship with Jesus in a personal and communal way. The national commission will also offer resources for planning events within parishes and the diocese involving particular groups or issues (such as families, refugees, the sick, young people, social justice, the environment) and where possible, match them up with the particular Sundays which are already designated for them. National e-conferences on the Year of Grace, the Year of Faith and the Eighty-six participants gathered at Berri for the inaugural Assembly. The Bishop spoke of his hopes and dreams for this region of the local Church, whilst Fr Steve Ardill outlined the long journey that culminated in the Assembly, and the reasons for our being optimistic, as we plan for our preferred future. Representatives of the five parishes shared a little of their of their own faith journey and Hannah Stavrou spoke with enthusiasm of the activities of the Glossop High School Young Christian Students. A Working Group has formed and a Report is to be made, and forwarded to the Bishop in due course. 50th Anniversary of the Second Vatican Council will ensure that locations like those within the Port Pirie Diocese will have access to the highest quality resources, which otherwise could be concentrated particularly on the larger cities. A special dvd will be released for use throughout Australia consisting of images of Jesus to enable us to consider the many ways in which Jesus has been depicted in various forms and how each portrayal of Our Lord brings out a different perspective on who Jesus was and what he means to us. The dvd will give us the opportunity to choose the images which best appeal to us as the Jesus we know and love and to use them as a focus for our meditation and prayer. The final liturgy for the Year of Grace will be called Face of Jesus, Faces we know a Celebration of Holiness.

Year of Grace 5 A Year of Grace! What's it about? Last year our Catholic Bishops were reviewing pastoral care for the church and decided that 2012 would be an opportune time to revisit our understanding of God s grace as we experience it with a particular focus on god s gift of his Son as our saviour. The renewal which came with the Year of Great Jubilee 2000, inspired them to declare Pentecost 2012 until All Saints Day 2013 as a Year of Grace for the Australian Church inviting each of us to Start afresh from Christ. Archbishop Philip Wilson, as president of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference described our current situation saying, We recognise, firstly, God s abundant blessings to us. You will know many of these in your own lives. The Church in our county has been abundantly blessed in recent years as Catholics have achieved equality in every aspect of Australian life. The great work done by the religious orders in raising the level of education, the advances made since the Second World War, influxes of immigrants from mainland Europe and a greater level of inter-religious and inter-cultural tolerance have all been aspects encouraging thanks for God s graciousness. The Canonisation of Mary MacKillop is a sign of the maturity of the faith among us. The Church has also had to bear the consequences of the sins and human weaknesses of its members, particularly amongst the clergy and religious. The tremendous, gracefilled work of so many has been marred by the abuse of children and adult parishioners by some. The Year of Grace will continue to seek forgiveness from the victims and healing for all concerned. Mean-spirited and prejudicial attitudes and the unjust treatment of indigenous peoples and refugees are also to be addressed by the Year of Grace. The environmental movement and the changes we have made to our lands, oceans and atmosphere have also encouraged us to recognize our roles as stewards of our world and to seek to ensure a healthy sustainable ecosystem for the future. The Year of Grace will help us appreciate what God has created and our responsibilities to use God s great gift respectfully. The Church is also inviting each one of us to open our hearts to recognize the grace which is to be found within us already and to welcome in the grace which will make the Christ life within us complete. As Archbishop Wilson says, Most deeply, we desire for the light of Christ to burn more brightly in the heart of each Australian. 6 6 Year of Grace sputtering into oblivion. The events are of the measured, deliberate, lower key variety where we will be given the time and energy to make changes which are integrated and lasting. For example, we may decide that the remembrance of the dead during November is a practice we wish to revitalize. The parish could offer a liturgy of remembrance and blessing of graves on the Sunday closest to All Souls and this could become an annual part of parish tradition (as already in some of our parishes) There are many simple ways which you can probably suggest to make our spiritual life richer and more fulfilling. Fortunately we have the Year of Great Jubilee as a foundation for the events of The Port Pirie Diocese, in particular, has a significant store of experience from that time. Our recent Diocesan Assembly XXVI was a legacy of that year in that the initial assembly was part of the three year preparation for Such was the appeal and the richness of the assembly process that it did not finish with the Jubilee Assembly, but has continued without flagging until the present day (and hopefully for a long time into the future) The anticipation is that we will not look back with fond memories to the events of the Year of Grace but that we will recognise them in daily life traditions and practices opening us to becoming more and more filled with God s grace. The Australian Catholic Bishops invite us to revisit the opening words of the Pope John Paul II s Millennial letter where he repeats the words of Jesus to the catchless fisherman, Go out into the deep. Lk 5:4 To do all of this we need to consider what grace actually means and how grace is experienced. The natural experience of God s grace is God s free gift of the universe and everything in it; created not for God s benefit but for ours. Grace is the creative, sustaining and drawing power which gives us yesterday, today and tomorrow. Just to recognize the awesomeness of that reality and to see God s gift in the tiniest insect and the largest galaxy is the beginning of our appreciation of grace. As well as that incredible power for good we also recognize that there is disorder in nature and moral disorder amongst ourselves. These things work against the fullness of life God intends for the world and for each one of us. We may sometimes think that we should be able to use our own resources to overcome moral disorder but knowing the impossibility of such a task, fortunately it is not primarily up to us. Throughout history God has given us saving grace to enable us to overcome these obstacles, culminating in the gift of his son, Jesus, as our ultimate source of salvation. The Year of Grace is our opportunity to consider more thoroughly what this simple summary entails and even more importantly to recognize and appreciate the allpervasive power of grace which God constantly gives and offers. As we more deeply understand grace we can experience and grow with it to receive life to the full as Jesus promised. Jn 10:10 A national committee consisting of delegates from every diocese and eparchy and ordinariate in Australia is currently working hard to provide the plans and resources for the Year of Grace to be celebrated in every parish, school and home. The Year of Grace will be inaugurated in Masses at each of our churches on Pentecost Sunday, 27th May, or at the next Sunday Mass after that date. Welcome aboard. 7 St Marks College 7 The Year of Grace: Some thoughts from a Principal s Desk I can see the playground from my window. It s morning. I hear the children first and then see them arrive, chattering and connected. There s the blurred noise of the bus and the laughter. Cars are quickly dropping young people off. I see the staff scurry and focussed. There are smiles, sideways hellos, books, lists and laptops. There s a sandwich designed for efficient consumption because it s a yard duty day. And I know it s an exciting unfolding moment, busy and absorbed. I look out of that window to a community, feeling a sense of privilege. In the freshness of the morning it is a graced time as they enter. When we walk into a school ground, we believe that we walk onto holy ground. That s the way we see things at school. There is something sacred about the property, the heritage of past spirits, the legacies of so many previous footsteps. There is the beauty of the architecture, the relationships nurtured, the dreams and the efforts. When we walk into school, members of staff share a time of co-mission; shared mission; shared commitment to students who are sacred, and noble, fragile and impulsive. It s a mission that watches them run around the school yard getting dirty, swinging from a monkey bar or slumping in school desks. A mission that sees them drift into that Friday afternoon catatonia and sometimes it s only Tuesday. Into this school ground we happily walk, cluttered, sometimes burdened, but with a sense of this purpose. We enter into a shared mission; our co-mission, which is nobler than ourselves and becomes holy because, in the mystery of God s presence, we members of staff in a Catholic school call it vocation. This vocation is a co-mission that loves community, is inspired by learning and sees the potential in someone; everyone I guess. That s what we try to do; that s what we commit ourselves to and become good at. Inspired by the learning and seeing the potential is what we do. I look out of the window and see our shared mission arriving with the muddle of their lives and know it will be difficult and exhilarating and those students just seem to bring the best out in us even when we are supposed to bring the best out in them. This year our Bishop will ask us to reflect on a year of grace. At Pentecost, the twelve month reflection begins. This will become a time for seeing the moments of blessing. The moments of grace. In my beginning time here at St Marks, from the window, I can t help but see blessing every day, all over the place, in the fields, playgrounds and classrooms of St Mark s. I see blessing in the manner in which people clearly care for one another and how the kids keep saying hello in the yard. I see blessing in the real joy of a staff room when a staff member returns with her new baby or when we rejoice and share someone s birthday morning tea. I see the blessing in a teaching group focussed around computers planning lessons or when a Year 10 PE teacher announced that his class were approaching a world record for throwing and catching and every one of them believed him and they tried harder. It was a moment of grace when a teacher hypnotised a yabbie and in speaking to the students about algal bloom, crustacean reproduction and Australian pub life, was able to hypnotise the Year 9s. I saw the blessing when the Year Level coordinator called himself an old sergeant and went out of his way to care for innocence and fragility with little sergeant bluster. I see it in the number of old scholar teachers who regenerate the spirit of this school and it is a grace that so many old scholars send their children here. There is grace in the laughter when the Reception student confused Bon Jovi and Don Bosco perhaps St John Bosco would resonate with Bon Jovi whose famous song is Keep the Faith. I see the grace in Year 7s holding the hands of the receptions because they are buddies and that s important and it s a blessing that most of the Year 3 boys, so involved in life, are covered in playground sand. I see the grace when teachers are trying so hard to build professionalism and get those lessons humming and sometimes the students hum slightly out of tune. I see a graced moment in a Bishop who remembers names and makes the young people laugh. And he invited the Year 10 s to write a summary of his Opening Mass sermon. They blanched and half smiled and so did the Year 10 RE teachers. But it is still wonderful that we can gather with our Bishop. It is why the intimacy of this diocese in all its hugeness is a blessing. However, I will be listening more carefully to his homilies from now on. Looking out of a window in the morning is grace filled; a holy moment. Greg Hay Principal St Marks Collage

8 Emmaus Recognising Grace on the Walk to Emmaus Caravaggio s painting, the Supper at Emmaus interprets an awesome moment for two disciples at table with Jesus. The Australian poet, Peter Steele, reflects on the painting in his poem Innkeeper at Emmaus. The painter and the poet glorify God with eyes opened, recognising God in the glorious persistence of grace in the living, loving presence of Jesus. The disciples, two of them, on that same day, the day of the resurrection, were going to the village of Emmaus about 7 miles from Jerusalem, talking with each other. Jesus himself came near and went with them but their eyes were kept from recognising him. Jesus began with Moses and all the prophets, interpreting all the things telling them about himself in the scriptures. They urged him stay with us, and at the table he took bread blessed and broke it and gave it to them, then their eyes were opened and they recognised him; and he vanished from their sight. And they said were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road? [Luke 24: 13-35] Opening our eyes and seeing afresh the amazing things in everyday life, in awe, wonder, beauty, love, we recognise Jesus in our lives in the grace in which we live. Talking with each other of the meaning of God s life coming near to us transforms our hearts in a deeper and deeper mystery. We live together in a world of grace as our invisible God comes near and stays with us in our visible world. Our story intersects with the Gospel story as if in a spiritual reservoir through which we understand our lives as graced, sacred work, the work of God. God is in our story in the profound notion of a world full of grace. Dreams shattered Life battered We wandered back Dejected Three summer s dreams Rejected Heads cast down Silence profound Th e n The words came so slow As if to show That we never really knew What he was taking us through Silence rules again As we refrain From the reality That has ceased to be Gravel underfoot We mistook For a stranger Not our friend Whom we thought we d seen Through to the end So, the old stories were retold And the truth, slowly to unfold Then our destination was reached The journey nearly breached Except for the invitation That caused him to remain in our situation Then the bread was broken So our hearts and minds were opened When he disappeared from sight But somehow still with us on our flight As we returned to them Gathered in Jerusalem As we burst through the doors We spoke of the cause And we could see they knew That the women s story was true He is risen! 9 Year of Grace 9 The Year of Grace and Our Diocese. The recent Diocesan Assembly marked the official introduction of the Year of Grace to the diocese. In May, the National Director, Fr Peter Brock, will be introducing the Year of Grace to the priests in preparation for the launch on Pentecost Sunday, May 27th. The launch will involve Masses in every church on the theme of Grace and asking God s grace for the project and the diocese. We will participate in the national events: Celebrating the 50th Jubilee of Vatican II on 11th October and an associated October E-conference; All Saints Day 1st November; a Lenten program in 2013 with a liturgy of repentance - Bringing Our Wounds to Jesus on March 17th; a liturgy - The Face of Jesus, Faces we Know A Celebration of Holiness on April 12th and the Closing of the Year of Grace on the last Sunday before Advent Within the diocese we will concentrate on recognising the many ways in which God already ALEX'S MEAT SERVICE Props. ALEX & ANTHEA DUNBAR SPECIALISING IN PAN-READY MEATS BULK & BARBECUE PACKS CLUB SUPPLIES 281 SENATE RD, PORT PIRIE Ph blesses in our daily life, secular and spiritual. One of the aims is to revitalise our appreciation of the enormity of the gift that God has given us in creation and to take time to see the grace filled everyday moments which we take for granted. How long is it since we just sat in a quiet spot and watched the sun paint the sky with the pinks and reds of sunrise? There are so many graced moments which we miss in our rush to fit in the busyness of our lives. The committee is preparing a set of simple prayers to encourage us to have a moment with Jesus. Many of us find it difficult to regularly Pay a visit as in memories of old but there is no restriction on spending a moment with Jesus such as when we have something to be thankful for, something we find daunting, when we feel lonely or when we just want a moment of quiet time in peace. Part of this process will be to have a look at what our image of Northern Agencies MANUFACTURER'S AGENTS, WHOLESALE DISTRIBUTORS, STOCKISTS & PROCUREMENT SERVICES YOU WANT IT, WE'LL GET IT Telephone: (08) Facsimilie: (08) Ayliffe Street, WHYALLA, SA, northernagencies@oz .com.au Jesus is and to develop our own understanding of who Jesus is for us. We may think that Jesus is the same for everyone but we only have to look at the way each of the Gospels give us a different portrait of Jesus to see that is not so. For example, the passion in John presents a Jesus who is confidant and in charge while in Mark we see his very real anguish as he accepts his destiny. It is no wonder that artists have given us such varied images of Jesus and that each culture depicts Jesus in a way which is meaningful to them. Jesus is much more that than the fair skinned, medieval, European that inspired most of our traditional pictures. In the Year of Grace we will be encouraged to find an image of Jesus which most accurately portrays the Jesus each of us knows. Then we could place our picture or statue in a quiet prayer space to help us focus our minds on Jesus. Finally we will build on the many initiatives already operating so as to introduce throughout the whole diocese, those which are found particularly meaningful. Blessing graves in November, celebrating the feast days of the patron Saints of our churches, remembering our own saint s days, encouraging our priests and religious by remembering their anniversaries, celebrating in a renewed way the feast days of the Church calendar, ecumenical celebration of the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday are just a few. The committee (Sr Sonia Wagner, Mrs Kathy McEvoy, Fr Arno Vermeeren) would be very grateful to hear what celebrations and practices are particularly appreciated in your parish. The Year of Grace is our year, for us to help bring about by opening ourselves to the fullness of God s life being offered.

10 Prayer and Grace Prayer and Grace During the Year of Grace (Pentecost Pentecost 2013) the Bishops of Australia have called us all, individually, as families and as faith communities, to join them in responding to this challenge: Our Christian communities must become genuine "schools" of prayer, where the meeting with Christ is expressed not just in imploring help but also in thanksgiving, praise, adoration, contemplation, listening and ardent devotion, until the heart truly "falls in love". (NMI 33). Composed by the National Planning Team and endorsed by the Bishop's Working Party, the following is the official prayer for A Year of Grace. Gracious God, You have blessed this ancient land with many gifts, especially its people. We thank you for the Year of Grace, a time to start afresh from Christ. You invite us to contemplate the face of Jesus your Son, that we may experience a new wave of grace, and that the light of Christ may burn more brightly in our lives. Attune our hearts and minds to the presence of your Holy Spirit, that our Church may be transformed, our relationships be healed, and our nation grow in compassion and justice. With the intercession of St Mary MacKillop, who showed us new ways of living the Gospel, we make our prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. Mary, Help of Christians, pray for us. Further Prayer Resources Below is another prayer written for the Year of Grace, which might be helpful for personal prayer or in small groups. Jesus, as I contemplate your face, let me experience your great love for me. Reveal your saving grace and give me a grateful heart. RETREATS AND DAYS OF REFLECTION FOR THE YEAR OF GRACE This is a call to conversion more than to education, to prayer more than to study, to a retreat more than to a program. Australian Catholic Bishops Clergy and religious, and many of our other fellow Catholics, have had regular opportunities and fruitful experiences in taking "time out" to make a retreat and to deepen their life of prayer. During this Year of Grace, parishes, groups and individuals in the diocese are invited to consider taking the opportunity for such a retreat experience of several days, or a weekend, or just some hours in a single day, at home or at a Centre. These experiences can be developed with the assistance of the Ignatian Centre for Spirituality, Adelaide, and with other resource personnel within the diocese and beyond, according to need, interest and invitation. 12 12 A grace filled, learning community - Caritas College Cling to God s love and grace (Mary MacKillop) From Pentecost 2012 to Pentecost 2013, the bishops of Australia have invited all Catholics throughout the country to join with them in a Year of Grace. The Caritas College c o m m u n i t y have embraced this theme with staff and students actively discerning what this means is also marked as the Year of the Farmer. The themes of scarcity and abundance connect the Year of Grace and the Year of the Farmer. At times our farming communities are blessed with rain and sunshine at the right times. These are gifts freely given and joyously received. Similarly, grace is a gift freely given. The initial weeks of our school year have been marked by a strong focus on establishing a learning environment that is grace filled, enabling all students to feel welcome, included and at home in classes and in our school environment. (08) All the time... Every day Each class has been reflecting on the way in which our learning environment in 2012 will be recognised as a Grace Filled Learning Environment. Students have chosen themes such as hospitality, hope and optimism, valuing and celebrating success and respect for self and others, and have developed indicators of a learning environment imbued with these values, to assist us to focus our attention throughout the year: Hospitality welcoming each other, accepting difference, greeting each other and using good manners Hope and Optimism - using positive language, asking for help, self-belief and forgiving self and others Respecting Self and Others being punctual, wearing the uniform with pride, and speaking well to and of others Valuing and celebrating success - congratulating others, encouraging, giving praise, taking pride, doing your best. R-12 Opening School liturgy: students giving and receiving gift boxes of Grace Each class evaluated the impact of a learning environment that has an abundance or scarcity of gracious actions. Classes represented their commitment to contributing to our grace filled learning community using the symbol of gift boxes which were brought forward as part of our Opening School Year liturgy. They will be a visual reminder throughout the year of our ongoing commitment to offer and accept gracious actions. As Mary MacKillop was open to the gift of God s grace, at Caritas College we are reminded that: Grace is always freely given. Grace is a gift from God. Grace is love and beauty. Grace is received freely. Grace is God s blessings. Living with Grace brings rewards. Grace is God s favour.

13 The Communion of Saints In this year of grace we are refocusing on patron saints, as people of grace, inspiring in their individuality. An ancient practice for individuals is that the day of the feast of the saint was considered more important than a person s actual birthday. This is still strongly followed in some Eastern rite Catholics and Orthodox Churches. In religious orders, where members take a new religious name, their new saints name is also celebrated. The qualities and example of the saint are also remembered and meditated on as inspirations to those whose name they take. Celebration of the feast day of the patron of the local church is also a long and honoured tradition. This year we are invited to revisit traditions to enrich our own faith-life, to remember the example of these extraordinarily graced women and men, and prayerfully request their solidarity with us. To start our renewed approach, we have collated a list of the patrons of our churches and their feast days. 14 14 Knowing Jesus, not just about Jesus Lectio Divina Knowing Jesus, not just about Jesus. Especially as we contemplate Jesus life, allow His way to become our way, we let Him into our hearts, and we come to know Jesus, not just to know about Jesus. This is a principal aim of A Year of Grace. One way of coming to know Jesus more intimately is through LECTIO DIVINA. LECTIO DIVINA Lectio Divina, Latin for divine reading or holy reading, represents a form of prayer used by Christians throughout the entire history of the Church. Lectio is one of the precious treasures of the followers of St Benedict. Along with Liturgy and manual labour, lectio forms part of daily life for a Benedictine. to it. Lectio is not preparation for preaching or teaching, though both these activities can benefit from it. Still less is lectio a new system of prayer. It is perhaps best described as an art. The art of lectio divina begins with cultivating the ability to listen deeply, to hear with the ear of our hearts as St Benedict encourages in the Prologue to the Rule. This gentle listening is a particular way of tuning in to the presence of God in your life through his word coming to us in the scriptures. It is learnt more by practice and experience than by talking about it. How do I come to Lectio Divina? I come with an attitude of attention and expectancy: the Word has something to say to me and my life I come with an immense reverence for the Word. The atmosphere I create should speak of this reverence. I try to come with an uncluttered mind and without an agenda as to what I might experience, or how much I may cover during the time of prayer. I come not expecting quick results. I come regularly. I prepare myself for prayer. This approach to prayer has more to do with my heart than my mind Lectio represents one of the oldest ways of lifting the mind and heart to God, or perhaps more accurately, of opening our minds and hearts to let the mind and heart of God permeate our own. It is a way of trying to hear where God is at work in our life. Lectio is the slow and steady, patient and prayerful reflection on a given text of scripture. Lectio is not scripture study, although the study of scripture can add a rich dimension SMITHS ELECTRICAL "We've Got it" * Large range of ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES * Mobile Telephones & Accessories * Televisions Call in and see Phil and Judy LaForgia & the team at Ellen Street, Port Pirie Ph:

15 PREPARING FOR LECTIO Choose a reading from the Scriptures perhaps the reading of the day or one of the Readings from Sunday Mass. Select your prayer space, a sacred space, a special place. Even if temporary, it needs to be a different space, removed from the routine activities of life. One or more of the following items could help to create a fitting space: a prayer stool, a prayer mat, a candle, incense, an oil burner, a crucifix, an icon or flowers. MOVEMENTS OF LECTIO Lectio can be done individually or in a group. The following are movements that can assist this prayerful reading of scripture alone or with others - rather than stages that must be followed in order. First Reading: Lectio. Read. Listen to the Word as it is read. Listen for a word or phrase that strikes you. Share a word or phrase, if you wish, with no explanation or embellishment. Second Reading: Meditatio. Meditate. Meditate on the Word. Ponder what it is saying to you. How is it connected with your life now? After silence, share briefly with the person beside you, if you wish. Third Reading: Oratio. Pray. Ask yourself what is the message, invitation or challenge here for me? Listen to God s call, ponder, talk to God or just wait in silence with God. Pray aloud or silently. And later on Contemplatio: Contemplate. Sometimes this message will stay with you in your mind or heart after the time of lectio. Don t expect this to happen. But, if it does, carry it with you. Live with it, let it echo within you as you go about your daily chores. Daily and hourly till the soil of the heart with the Gospel plough. A Concluding Prayer: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. AMEN A PRAYER OF BLESSING May God support us all the day long, till the shades lengthen, the evening comes, the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over and our work is done! Then may God grant us a safe and peaceful rest. May we be God s hands at work in our world. May we listen for God s Word in all that we do and may God complete us, inspire us and love us, all the days of our lives. Blessed John Henry Newman

16 Grace and Learning to dance When grace enters, there is no choice - humans must dance. W.H. Auden wrote those words and, beautiful as they sound, I wish they were true. When grace enters a room we should begin to dance but, sadly, more often than not we let some little thing, some minor mosquito bite, blind us to grace's presence. I say this with sympathy, not cynicism. We all know how mosquitoes can ruin a picnic. Here's an example: You are celebrating your birthday in your back yard, having a picnic with family and friends. The weather is perfect, the sun is warm, the mood is mellow, and everything around and within you is an invitation to be joyful and grateful. This is "Sabbath" in the biblical sense: You are celebrating life, your birthday. You are healthy, surrounded by family and friends who love you, enjoying leisure, time off the wheel of work, all with good food and good drink. Grace has entered and everything is wonderful, except for one thing, mosquitoes. As dusk begins to take hold they discreetly begin to infiltrate, inflicting a bite here and a bite there until eventually most everyone loses his or her focus and is preoccupied with keeping exposed rossigns port augusta windows, shopfronts, vehicles large format photos and canvas prints promotional / event banners information boards interpretive signage safety signs and products We project manage from initial concept to manufacture and complete installation. 52 Victoria Parade, Port Augusta P/F: rossigns@crossroadsconcepts.com.au parts of their flesh under vigilance. Eventually most of the good cheer and the gratitude evaporate and irritation at the mosquitoes effectively ends any inclination to dance. The picnic is brought down by a series of little bites! We could all recount a hundred kinds of incidences of this sort. Given the complexity and contingency within our everyday lives, mosquitoes of some type are invariably present. There is some rain on every parade, some irritation in virtually every situation in life, and some element challenging pure grace within almost every moment of life. Life rarely comes to us pure, free from all shadow. That's why former spiritualities said that we are "living in this valley of tears". In our lives we never experience a moment of clearcut, pure, joy. Everything comes with a shadow, a mosquito at the picnic. And so it is not always easy to dance, even in the clear presence of grace. Mosquito bites can easily cause us to lose perspective, to lose the big picture, the one that would have us see and celebrate grace, even in the face of some minor irritation. A minor irritation can make us lose sight of a huge grace. Today there is a rich spiritual and psychological literature that challenges us to try to live more fully inside the present moment and not let our heartaches about the past or our anxieties about tomorrow cheat us out of the riches of today. But, as we know, that is easier said than done. Elements from our past - halfremembered lullabies from childhood, an almost--forgotten face, a past love, an humiliation on the playground deep in our past, a misstep that still haunts us, and thousand other things from our past - impale themselves into our present. And the future, as well, colors our present as we anxiously worry about an impending decision, the meeting we must have tomorrow, what the doctor is going to tell us at our next visit, and how will meet our next mortgage bill. The present moment never comes to us pure. And yet the challenge remains, an important and healthy challenge: Don't let the mosquito bites within life blind you to the larger presence of grace! One of my favorite spiritual writers, David Steidl-Rast articulates this challenge very strongly, though he does it by emphasizing the positive. Here's an example from his writings: "You think this is just another day in your life. It's not just another day; it's the one day that is given to you today. It's given to you; it's a gift. It's the only gift that you have right now, and the only appropriate response is gratefulness. If you do nothing else but to cultivate that response to the great gift that this unique day is, if you learn to respond as if it were the first day of your life and very last day, then you will have spent this day very well." But that is a grace that does not come easily, it must be fervently prayed for. Mosquitoes will inevitably make their presence known at every picnic in our lives. That's a given. The challenge is to not lose sight of the larger presence of grace because of minor irritations. And it helps to keep one's sense of humor about this: I was trying to untie my shoe lace yesterday, a simple, rote act that I've performed blindly thousands of times. I tugged on a lace and, given how shoes are tied, it should be impossible for the laces not to open. But somehow a knot appeared instead! How can this happen? The answer lies in a simple, age-old, philosophical axiom: In the world of irritation there are no impossibilities, no limits of finitude, only infinite potentialities. Small wonder humans don't always dance when grace enters. By Fr Ron Rolheiser 22 January 2012

Around the Diocese 17 Eyre Peninsula Women s Retreat 2011 God first loved us was the theme of the retreat held at Thuruna in November for the women of the Eyre Peninsula. Fr. Adrian Noonan, from Kadina, accepted our invitation to lead this special retreat as he led our very first retreat in 1992, our tenth in 2001, and this was our twentieth. Twenty-five women gathered to be encouraged and inspired by Fr. Noonan s session on God s love for us the almighty and infinite unconditional love of God. The ultimate expression of God s love, was the incarnation; the love that led to the cross. We are asked to respond to that love. The women could relate very well to the analogy of priests being bridges between God and humanity, and mothers being bridges between God and families. The idea of being a bridge gave some interesting and thoughtful discussion. Mass was celebrated before lunch on Saturday and Reconciliation on Saturday evening, before the cutting of a delicious Elizabeth Harvey had made to celebrate our 20th birthday. The Sunday Eucharist brought the weekend to a close, with women taking home a deeper appreciation of where God is in our lives and the knowledge that we are all an aspect of God s love and add to the beauty of it.
