PETER S CHURCH WILL BE HOSTING THE ATLANTIC DEANERY LENTEN PROGRAM THIS YEAR. Beginning Wednesday, March 13 and continuing on the Wednesdays of Lent, the program will focus on the Presiding Bishop s program Embracing Way of Love to Open Up the Soul and Spirit. The programs will be on Wednesdays from 6 until 8:30 pm, and will include a Soup Supper each presented by the various organizations of the St. Peter s Parish. The schedule for hosting will be March 13 - Vestry; March 20 - Outreach (Sandwich Program); March 27 - Choir; April 3 - Altar Guild; April 10 - ECW. See page 5 for more details of the program. THE NATIONAL OVARIAN CANCER COALITION, Long Island Chapter will present a program to shed light on what every woman needs to know about ovarian cancer. 7 The Lessons The First Lesson: Exodus 34:29-35 Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him. 8 The Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2 Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. Therefore, since it is by God's mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God's word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. The Gospel: Luke 9:28-36 Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah"--not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!" When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen. The Sermon Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise be to thee, O Christ. The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. 9 begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People The Intercessor says Let us pray for the whole state of Christ s Church and the world. Almighty and ever living God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men: Receive these our prayers which we offer unto thy divine Majesty, beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love. Lord, hear our prayer Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all bishops and other ministers, especially Michael, the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church; Lawrence, Geralyn and Daniel, Bishops of the Diocese of Long Island; and Johncy, our Bishop-in-Residence, that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments. Lord, hear our prayer And to all thy people give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy Word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. The Celebrant continues It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God; because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, thou hast caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of thy glory in the face of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Celebrant and People Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. The Second Lesson: 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2 Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. Therefore, since it is by God's mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God's word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. 18

While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!" When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. 20 THE HOLY BAPTISM Presentation and Examination of the Candidates The Celebrant says The Candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented. Parents and Godparents I present Emma Grace Fauvell to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. After the candidate has been presented, the Celebrant asks the parents and godparents Will you be responsible for seeing that the child you present is brought up in the Christian faith and life? Parents and Godparents I will, with God's help. Celebrant Will you by your prayers and witness help this child to grow into the full stature of Christ? Parents and Godparents I will, with God's help. Then the Celebrant asks the following questions Question Do you renounce Satan and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God? Answer I renounce them. Question Do you renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God? Answer I renounce them. Question Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you from the love of God? Answer I renounce them. Question Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Savior? Answer I do. Question Do you put your whole trust in his grace and love? Answer I do. Question Do you promise to follow and obey him as your Lord? Answer I do. The congregation stands and the Celebrant then says Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. The Baptismal Covenant Celebrant Do you believe in God the Father? People I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Celebrant Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? People I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. 20

23 Thanksgiving over the Water The Celebrant blesses the water, first saying The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Baptism The candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant, who then baptizes the candidate, saying Emma Grace Fauvell, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. When this action has been completed, the Bishop prays, saying Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised her to the new life of grace. Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Then the Bishop places a hand on the person s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross, saying Emma, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. Amen. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance.
