As per the direction of the special meeting of the Cathedral Vestry held on Sunday, July 1, 2018, work has just finished to seal the exterior building envelope of our beloved bell tower. Skillful re-pointing of the heritage sandstone was completed by Snell Stone Masonry, and a thorough renovation of the tower's flat roof was provided by Maverick and Son. We very much appreciate the professionalism and high quality workmanship of these contractors on this project, as well as the leadership and oversight of our Wardens and the Cathedral Advisory Board. Special thanks go to Chris Tossell for his technical advise and practical assistance freely given. Next steps in the tower restoration will include: the replacement of its eight Gothic-arched louvers which are presently in an advanced stage of decay, remediation of the interior stonework, and the restoration of the bell mechanism. It is our sincere hope that this work might be completed in Until such time, the bell cannot be rung and the baptistry must remain off limits. We very much look forward to the next time we will hear our bell ring, sounding out a special moment in the life of our faith community. With work completed on the exterior of the bell tower, the way is now clear for the installation of the new digital sign which was approved at the special meeting of the Cathedral Vestry held on Sunday, March 4 th, of this year. Superior 7 Advertising Ltd. is nearing completion of the sign manufacture and we can anticipate its installation on the south west corner of the church grounds any day now. Facing the busy downtown intersection of Brock and Albert streets, this versatile sign will be an attractive addition to the Cathedral property as well as a fundamental part of St. Luke's communications strategy. The fruit of nearly thirty years of dreaming, planning, and effort, this is truly a sign for the times.
Bishop Anne is pleased to announce that Chris Pichette, preparing for chaplaincy in the Canadian Armed Forces, and presently serving a two year term as the Assistant Curate at St. Luke s Cathedral, will be received into the Anglican Church of Canada on Sunday, October 21 st. Chris comes to Algoma with the endorsement of Bishop Nigel Shaw, the Bishop Ordinary of the Military. Bishop Shaw will be present as Chris is welcomed as a priest into the Anglican Church at which time Father Chris will celebrate his first Eucharist at the Cathedral. Please pray for Chris and the members of St. Luke s Cathedral as they prepare for this important day in the life of the church.
Psalm 98.1 Since its earliest days, the St. Luke's congregation has enjoyed the rich blessing of music in its worship; in Sunday services, at baptisms, weddings and funerals, on high holy days, and in penitential seasons. As a cathedral, music has lifted up diocesan gatherings, clergy conferences, synods, ordinations and episcopal consecrations. So when the Cathedral's principal organ fell silent earlier this year and was found to be, after nearly fifty years of stalwart service, beyond repair, the parish leadership knew what had to be done. We would seek the best instrument to continue this important ministry well into the future. It was vital to determine what best means in this context. After much prayer, research, and consultation, we came to understand that the best instrument would meet the following criteria: The organ would have the rich, broad, and deep tonal quality, range, and capacity to serve and uplift the breadth of the Cathedral's worship life. In this, the bar was set at least at the high standard of the instrument the new organ is to replace. The physical presence of the organ within the worship space must not in any way impede or interfere with the experience of worship. Better still, the instrument's placement and appearance might be expected to be an enhancement to the liturgical environment. The instrument must meet the test of good stewardship. By this we mean that the organ must be of a high standard of manufacture, and be cost-effective over its projected life. Further, the cost of the instrument must not become a burden or impediment to the ongoing mission and ministry of the church. To address the final point, it was determined that the new organ should be paid for with monies generated from various fund raising activities and projects, and from gifts freely given, such as memorials and thank-offerings. The congregation will not enter into debt for the instrument, nor encumber the general operating budget of the church. To meet the other criteria it was necessary to survey the full range of available instruments. This lead to consultations with preeminent organ builders in Canada, the United States, and Europe. The rigorous survey came to the determination that the best instrument was a robust and innovative custom design to be produced by the firm Rudolf von Beckerath of Hamburg, Germany. The organ will have a console with three manuals, or keyboards, and a full pedal board, allowing the organist elegant control of 23 musical stops, with a total of 834 pipes. Each pipe is individually made of either fine solid wood or a special metal compound, and Continued on next page...
range in size from as small as a finger to approximately eight feet in length. The design is particularly innovative in that it places these pipes in three groupings within the Cathedral's chancel; one group behind the existing and beloved pipe facade from the church's first memorial pipe organ, and the other two in uniquely designed clusters on the raised platforms on either side of the choir stalls. In doing so, the pipes are configured for optimal sound quality, using the fine acoustics of the church building to best advantage. This also allows the pipes to be installed without traditional casework, reducing material and manufacturing costs while presenting the pipes as a beautiful visual enhancement in the worship space. This exciting design results in an instrument that best meets our established criteria, at a cost of $258,000, with a projected service life of 100 years. The closest competitor could offer an instrument of similar musical capacity only at a cost of approximately an additional $100,000. The Cathedral Vestry has strongly endorsed the Beckerath proposal and has approved a campaign to secure the necessary funding. A wide range of fund-raising activities and projects are underway, and generous financial gifts are being received. With an estimated time of six months from contracting to final installation, St. Luke's is hoping to enjoy the rich blessings of this new instrument sometime in the coming year. If you would like to become involved with any of the fund-raising activities, please speak to the Dean, the Church Wardens, or Helma Fleming in the Cathedral office. To make a financial gift toward the purchase of the organ, please use the donation form found at the back of the church or call us at For regular updates on this important project, follow our Cathedral Updates communiques or visit us at
St. Luke s Cathedral will celebrate Saint Francis of Assisi Sunday, September 30 th, at the 4:00 p.m. Evensong service. Everyone is invited to bring their pets to the worship service for a blessing. Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of the animals, so loved the animals that he is remembered as a friend and protector to them. Legends have left us with idyllic pictures of how beasts and birds were susceptible to the charm of St. Francis gentle ways, how they entered companionship with him and often felt protected by him. It is said birds listened so reverently to his sermon along the road near Bevagna that Francis chided himself for not having thought to preach to them before. He also found great delight and solace in simple things such as the rising sun or flowers, all aspects of nature. To date $1,185 has been raised for the pipe organ through the sale of Dene and Jen s delicious Homemade Ice Cream, made from only fresh ingredients. The next sale, and hopefully not the final sale, will be Sunday, October 28 th. Some of the delicious ice creams enjoyed have been Blueberry Peach Mint Chocolate Chip Baileys, Irish Cream, and Rum Gin, Tonic Water and Fresh Lemons, Toasted Coconut Triple Chocolate Mocha Chocolate This will provide funding for one rank of 56 pipes!
Our group meets on Saturdays, from October to April and welcomes children 5 17 years. Our activities include games, prayers, snacks, crafts, drama, music, and of course giggling. We first meet this Fall, on Saturday, October 13, 2018, 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Please note that we welcome new members throughout our year. This October, we have planned a visit to Farmer Bob s and some very special activities at our regular meetings. Most members start around the age of thirteen taking on leadership roles, and often earn their entire high school volunteer hours amidst a lot of fun and learning. We welcome members from the Cathedral family, other Anglican churches and denominations, and the community at large. Many of our new folks are invited by the children already in our group. When we perform dramas or concerts the proceeds are donated to charities often chosen by the children. Our plays are written specifically for the members. This allows shy young children to step up in spite of their shyness. We have been to Narnia, to Neverland, to Green Gables and visited Scrooge and Tiny Tim and a dog named Mutt. Through it all we have had the privilege of seeing tentative five year olds mature into confident and talented actors by the age of twelve or thirteen. We have a core of ten leaders who share their considerable talents throughout our year. Please contact the office at or at stlukescathedral@bellnet.ca if you are interested in your child joining or simply require more information.
