2 Day 01: Departure Depart for your overnight flight to Holy Land, meals served on board. Day 02: Arrival Arrive Ben Gurion Airport, meeting and assistance by your guide and driver. After the customs/emigration procedure, we start our journey along the Mediterranean (close to the ancient Via Maris) to ancient Caesarea maritime ruins, much of it built by Herod the Great, and the Capital of the Judean Roman procurators (e.g. Pontius Pilate, late Felix and Festus) and the site of the first Gentile baptisms by St. Peter. Paul was imprisoned here for two years while awaiting his ship to Rome for his trial as a Roman Citizen. We drive to Haifa and to Mr. Carmel, foundation of the Carmelite Order and site of Elijah s showdown with Jezebel s prophets. Mass over Elijah s Cave (Sometimes called Cave of the Madonna for one tradition said the holy family stayed here on the way to Nazareth from Egypt). Overnight in the Carmelite monastery Stella Maris in Haifa. Across Haifa harbor is Acre (now Acco) the last crusader castle to fall in 1291 (named for St. John of Arc). Beatitudes (The Galilee) Today after breakfast 8 a.m. departure for two places also along the Via Maris: Cana Mass, and then Spphoris (Zippori) (ancient Herodian and Roma style City, later a Jewish learning center). Within sight of Nazareth, Zippori may have been a site for Joseph and Jesus who could have plied their skills in the building trades as day workers where a multi-lingual and caravan trade culture existed. The Israelis have restored an excavation park. Most famous are the recovered mosaics, such as the beautiful Mona Lisa of the Galilee. Lunch in Nazareth, then the Holy sites in Nazareth with meditation upon the Incarnation. To Galilee for supper and overnight. Day 04: Capernaum to Caesarea Philippi After breakfast, Mass at Capernaum with site tour, followed by a trip north (Golan Heights/Crusader Castle) to see the upper Galilee and Jordan to Caesarea Philippi and ancient Shrine to Pan and others in Canaanite, Greek, Herodian and Roman times, made famous among Christians (cf. Matthew 16:16) with the naming of Petros (Peter) and the corresponding Petrine promise. Then the site of the famous excavations at Tel Dan. Return down the Jordan river rift (Tel Hazor will be pointed out along the way) Lunch. We come to the Church of Peter s Primacy for a visit and return to the hotel for Prayer, de-briefing and supper. Day 05: Complete the Evangelical Triangle celebrate Mass on Mt. Tabor Today, we start after breakfast visit Mt. Tabor for site tour and Mass. From there proceed to a modern site on the Jordan River where baptism take every day and renew your own baptismal promises. Then drive around the east side of the Sea below the Golan Heights, past historic Kibbutzim, near the site of ancient boat Bethsaida and the flow of the Jordan River from the north. After lunch and a visit to the ancient boat museum and a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, you have completed the Evangelical Triangle with the Church of the Multiplication at Tabgha (German Benedictines). Then visit Mt. Beatitudes church for meditation and then retire for the evening. Prayer/Debriefing at your hotel and dinner and overnight. 3 We proceed to Jericho (lunch at Temptation restaurant / Same) and on to the Dead Sea for an optional swim then the excavation site of the Qumran. GO up to Bethany (Modern Palestinian city of Azariah) on the east side of the Mt. of Olives, site of the miracle of Lazarus and home of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, and the Jesus meal at Simon the Leper s house. Mass at the Franciscan Chapel next to Lazarus tomb (4:30 p. m.). Dinner and overnight at your hotel in Bethlehem. Day 07: Bethlehem, Shepard s Field and Yad Vad Shem Today we have 6:45 a.m. wake up call, breakfast and departure at 8:00 a.m. proceed to Rachel s Tomb on the way to Bethlehem to shop for olive wood articles and then church of the Nativity to celebrate Mass, tour the cave structure of Jesus birth under the oldest Church in the Holy land followed by the cave of Alexandira. Go to Beit Sahur and the Shepherd s Field with its cave Chapel and the Franciscan Chapel above. We will enjoy a tent lunch in the area. Then go to the Shrine of the Book and Museum of Yad Vashem. Evening prayer/supper/debriefing at your hotel in Bethlehem. Day 08: Mount of Olives and Old Jerusalem Today our wake-up time at 6:45 a.m., and Departure at 8:00 a.m. We proceed to Mt. Olives with its great view of the Old City of Jerusalem, pointing out the Muslim guarded but crusader-built site of the Ascension. Walk on part of the Palm Sunday road to the Peter Noster Church for a view of the Grotto Cave of teaching (one of the sites of Jesus teaching, e.g. he Lord s Prayer again celebrated here as at the Sermon on the Mount in Galilee in the Church complex and then Mass. in the Church. Continue down through the ancient cemeteries to see the Dominus Flevit Church, the Church of All Nations (the Gethsemane Shrine), the ancient Olive tree garden, and in to the Kidron Valley to the site of the tomb prepared for Mary (before her Assumption). Lunch by bus go to St. Stephen s gate and enter the old City to visit the Church of St. Anne, the Bethesda Pool excavations, and then do the Via Dolraossa (and Station Prayers) ending at the Holy Sepulcher. (At station 1 & 2 there is a scale model of old Jerusalem to study) With time there are four quarters of the old city to explore: Christian, Jewish, Armenian, Muslim worthy of exploration when time. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in Bethlehem. Day 09: Western Wall, Mt. Zion, and the Cheese maker, Kidron and Gehenna Valleys Today wake up at 6:30 a.m. after breakfast, depart to Dormition (of Mary Abbey, Upper Zion was developed later under Solomon and became the Christian house church centers in the first century (The Essene gate near here indicates their presence, too). Visit the Cenacle (of the Last Supper and Pentecost and Resurrection appearances), and the so-called tomb of David below. Walk down through the excavation in the Jewish quarter and then the Western Wall, and see lower Zion (Sion), Lower Zion (Ophel) is where Davis began after conquering the ancient city of Jebus (Jebusites), near the one water source, the Spring of Gihon. Then go to St. Peter in Gallicantu for Mass. This was the site of Peter s denial of Christ and first trial of Jesus in Caiaphas palace and site of the cave and cistern dungeon prison where Jesus spent the remainder of the night before meeting Pilate in another place. Walk up some ancient steps leading to the Kidron Valley for a prayer Service. Lunch. Choice of shopping, visiting the four quarters. Fair well dinner at local restaurant in Bethlehem. Day 10: Return Departure to U.S.A. Mass at the Holy Sepulcher: (If departure time in the morning we will move this special Mass to earlier date) return to hotel and check out and in route to Ein Karem, site of the Magnified and Benedictus. Then travel on to the Emmas of Abu Gosh, 7 miles from Jerusalem, is the Crusader Emmaus and the site of the resting of the ancient Ark of the Covenant at the house of Abinadab. Two Churches mark these spots. Transfer to Ben-Gurion airport, return travel to U.S.A. CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS: If a passenger cancels his/her tour membership there will be a cancellation fee of $ per person to cover administrative and communication costs up until 121 days before departure. For reasons of passenger safety and well-being, persons with impaired mobility, vision, or mental capacity will not be permitted on the tour. Goodshepherd Travel reserves the right to refuse passage to someone who is in such physical or mental condition as to be unfit for travel or who may require care and attention beyond that which the tour guide and tour host can provide. The tour requires a substantial amount of walking and the sites are not accessible by wheelchair.
