1 Services and Music Dean: Canon Precentor: Interim Director of Music: Peter Atkinson Michael Brierley James Lancelot
2 In Chaim Potok s novel My Name is Asher Lev, Asher s father explains to the young Asher how a connection between a person and the Maker of the Universe may be established. There must be an opening, a passageway, Asher s father explains, even a passageway as small as the eye of a needle. Then, his father continues, The Master of the Universe will move in, as it were, and widen the passage (p. 98). There currently is much talk in the Church of England about mission and evangelism, even intentional mission and evangelism. At times, that talk can seem overwhelmingly demanding, prompting us to feel that we ought to engage in such even though we are not convinced that we are equipped to do so. Talk of a passageway as small as the eye of a needle seems, however, not so overwhelming, especially when its widening falls rightly on, not us, but the Master of the Universe. In a month when we will hear yet more of intentional mission, of Back to Church Sunday, and of being ever more evangelistic, perhaps we will feel less inadequate, even less guilt-ridden, if we but turn ourselves to small acts of kindness, simple, heartfelt words of thankfulness. Such acts and words cost little. They may be more deliverable. Yet they will grant the Lord of all a passageway whereby both his self-introduction may be heard by others, and his invitation to others to share with us in the worship of the One whose service is perfect freedom may be more readily accepted. Perhaps September is a good month in which to be passageway makers, or, as someone else once said, to prepare the way of the Lord. Alvyn Pettersen Page 2
