2 PAGE TWO SEPTEMBER 16, 2018 VIRGEN DEL CISNE STORY The Virgin of Cisne is a Marian advocacy of the Catholic Church, its image has its primary center of worship in the Basilica of Cisne, in the parish of Cisne, in the province of Loja, Equador. The Virgin of Cisne has millions of devotees which meet from all parts of the world to pay homage to Mary The Mother of God, whom appeared for the first time in Cisne on the 12 th of October 1594, date in which the parish of Cisne was stricken by a big drought and rat plague that devastated all the crops; consequently there was a terrible famine that obliged the indios on one side to emigrate in search for better lands and on the other they did it fleeing from the ones that where trying to impose on them the catholic religion. The indios found themselves in this situation, when the Most Holy Virgin appeared to a young indigenous girl that was used to go out to the fields to shepherd her sheep and on her way she encountered a beautiful Lady crowned with fragrant roses that accompanied her while she was in the fields with conversations about God and this is what she told her Go and tell your elders to build a church here so that I will assist them so that they will hunger never again Here is the promise of the Most Blessed Virgin. Trust in me, because I am going to help you and protect you so that never again you will experience hunger. Here I want to assist you erect in this place a temple, that I will be there always with you. Part of the beautiful story of the Virgin of Cisne, consists that in 1829 for the decree of Simon Bolivar President at that time of the Great Colombia, allowed that the Virgin be moved from the population of Cisne to the city of Loja. As an act of gratitude for the wars of independence the carved Virgin will leave Cisne in August carried for a distance of 72 km, a walk of faith that lasts three days, every year on top of the shoulders of her faithful, the statue of the Virgin begins its pilgrimage on the 17 th of August from Cisne up to San Pedro de la Bendita, Cantamayo, and arriving finally to Loja on the 20 th of August remaining in the city until the 1 st of November when the journey back begins and arrives to Cisne on the 17 th of November where it will remain in its Sanctuary until the following year.

This kind of prayer is most fruitful and powerful. Our Friday prayer time before the Blessed Sacrament in Saint Joseph Chapel begins at 9:00am until 9:00pm. (Of course, we can use an increase in your weekly donations but we also need your volunteering). Specifically, we need: People who would be willing to be appointed to our Parish Council which meets every other month. People who would be willing to train as Teachers of Religion to our children on Sunday mornings. Ushers, Readers at Mass, Choir members, Instrumentalists, Altar servers. People to form a church decorating committee. People to form a Christmas Tree committee. Qualified people to be on our parish Finance Advisory Committee. In short, we need people to give some of their time and talents to the parish. Please consider helping us to the extent you can and let Msgr. Marino know of your interest. Experienced teachers help families of children with Special Needs prepare for Sacraments. Classes meet every Sunday in our Basilica Conference Center. 7 PAGE SEVEN SEPTEMBER 16, 2018 ALTAR SERVERS We present you with a wonderful opportunity for your sons and daughters to be an Altar Server at our beautiful Basilica! This is an important service in the Church, not only to assist the priests, but also to help the congregation celebrate the Mass more prayerfully. It is really a service to our Lord and His Blessed Mother. Altar Serving is a unique opportunity to actively live out our Catholic Faith. Altar Serving helps boys and girls grow closer to God by becoming more familiar with the Scriptures and the Saints, being at ease with the Church s Liturgy, and developing lifelong friendships. Responsibilities include serving at the altar for Masses and other liturgical celebrations, as well as participating in different practices and rehearsals throughout the year. Any boy or girl who has received First Holy Communion is eligible. Please contact the Faith Formation Office for more details. The Children s Choir and Bell Choir of Regina Pacis will resume on Sunday, September 16th at the 10:30 Mass. The choir, in addition to singing every Sunday, sings Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, Easter Sunday and First Communion. Rehearsals are Tuesdays, from 4:00-5:00pm in the Regina Conference Center. If interested, you may register your child for the Children s Choir and Bell Choir on September 9th at Orientation for the Faith Formation program and on September 16th, during the first day of classes. Children who wish to participate must have already received their First Communion. OLPH / St. Andrew s boys swim team tryouts will be held at the John Hay HS Campus Pool at 4th & 5th Streets in Park Slope at 7 PM on Monday, September 17 and Wednesday, September 19.
