1 Granville Catholic Church Record Vol. 3. No. 17 April 29, th Sunday of Easter, Year B The Official Bulletin of Holy Trinity Parish at Granville and Holy Family Parish at East Granville THE MONTH of Mary The month of May is the month which the piety of the faithful has especially dedicated to Our Blessed Lady, and it is the occasion for a moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics in every part of the world [pay] to the Queen of Heaven. During this month Christians, both in church and in the privacy of the home, offer up to Mary from their hearts an especially fervent and loving homage of prayer and veneration. In this month, too, the benefits of God's mercy come down to us from her throne in greater abundance (Pope Paul VI, Encyclical on the Month of May, n. 1). Th i s C h r i s t i a n c u s t o m o f dedicating the month of May to the Blessed Virgin arose at the end of the 13 th century. In this way, the Church was able to Christianise the secular feasts which took place at that time. In the 16 th century, books appeared and fostered this devotion. The pious practice of honouring Mary during the month of May has been especially recommended by the Popes. Pope Pius XII made frequent reference to it and in his great Encyclical on the Sacred Liturgy (Mediator Dei) characterised it as one of other exercises of piety which although not strictly belonging to the Sacred Liturgy, are nevertheless of special import and dignity, and may be considered in a certain way to be an addition to the liturgical cult: they have been approved and praised over and over again by the Apostolic See and by the Bishops (n. 182). In May of 2002 Pope St. John Paul II said that this month is dedicated to Our Lady and that in accord with a long-standing tradition of devotion, parishes and families continue to make the month of May a Marian 'month, celebrating it with many devout liturgical, catechetical and pastoral initiatives! The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of the Church and therefore the example, as well as the guide and inspiration, of everyone who, in and through the Church, seeks to be the servant of God and man and the obedient agent of the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Wherever there is faith there is the example of Mary, because she lived by faith as the Scriptures remind us. If, then, piety is the virtue which binds us to the sources of all life, to God, to our parents, to the Church, to Christ, certainly Christian piety binds us, in grateful love, to Mary or our acceptance of Christ and of the mystery of our kinship with Him is imperfect, partial, and unfulfilled. So let us, throughout this holy month of Mary, dedicate ourselves more fervently to her motherly care and pray that she will guard us as her own sons and daughters and lead us to our true home.

Thank you to all those who helped to make last Sunday s celebration of the 40 th anniversary of the Missionary Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the World Australia ministry in Granville such a success. It was a great day of thanksgiving to almighty God and to the Sisters for all that they have given to us over these past 40 years. To all those who assisted with the Mass with the Apostolic Nuncio to make it a worthy celebration and to those who prepared the food and drinks for the social event afterwards we are grateful for your generous help and support. We were pleased that the Sisters from Canberra and Melbourne were able to join in the celebration and it was wonderful to see all the Sisters gathered together for this great day. May almighty God continue to bless the Sisters and grant them His unbounded grace so that they may continue in their good works.

6 Saints & STUFF CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH The Blessed Virgin Mary CATHOLIC Trivia Why the Devil Hates Mary During the Easter season the traditional hymn to Mary, Salve Regina ( Hail, Queen ) is replaced with Regina Coeli (Queen of Heaven). While the authorship of the Regina Coeli is unknown, the hymn has been traced back to the 12 th century. It was in Franciscan use, after Compline (Night Prayer), in the first half of the following century. A c c o r d i n g t o t r a d i t i o n Pope St. Gregory the Great heard angels chanting the first three lines one Easter morning in Rome, while following barefoot in a great religious procession of the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary painted by St. Luke. Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia. The Son whom you merited to bear, alleluia. Has risen, as He said, alleluia. Pray for us to God, alleluia.. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia.. For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia. 963 Since the Virgin Mary s role in the mystery of Christ and the Spirit has been treated, it is fitting now to consider her place in the mystery of the Church. The Virgin Mary is acknowledged and honoured as being truly the Mother of God and of the redeemer. She is clearly the mother of the members of Christ since she has by her charity joined in bringing about the birth of believers in the Church. 964 Mary s role in the Church is inseparable from her union with Christ and flows directly from it. This union of the mother with the Son in the work of salvation is made manifest from the time of Christ s virginal conception up to his death ; it is made manifest above all at the hour of his Passion: Thus the Blessed Virgin advanced in her pilgrimage of faith, and faithfully persevered in her union with her Son unto the cross. There she stood, in keeping with the divine plan, enduring with her only begotten Son the intensity of his suffering, joining herself with his sacrifice in her m o t h e r s h e a r t, a n d l ovingly consenting to the immolation of this victim, born of her: to be given, by the same Christ Jesus dying on the cross, as a mother to his disciple, with these words: Woman, behold your son. The Italian Priest, Fr. Sante Babolin, a renowned exorcist who has performed more than 2,300 exorcisms, said that as proof of this hatred of the devil toward the Mother of God, while I was insistently invoking the Most Holy Virgin Mary, the devil answered me: I can t stand That One (Mary) any more and neither can I stand you any more. Fr. Babolin pointed out the passage in the book of Genesis (3:15) which is evoked in the Rite of Exorcism where God says to the serpent that she will crush your head. In this ritual, he said, the exorcist says to the devil: Most cunning serpent, you shall no more dare to deceive the human race, persecute the Church, torment God s elect and sift them as wheat The sacred Sign of the Cross commands you, as does also the power of the mysteries of the Christian Faith The glorious Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, commands you; she who by her humility and from the first moment of her Immaculate Conception crushed your proud head.

8 5th Sunday of Easter, Year B The Readings First Reading The Acts of the Apostles (9:26-31) When Saul got to Jerusalem he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him: they could not believe he was really a disciple. Barnabas, however, took charge of him, introduced him to the apostles, and explained how the Lord had appeared to Saul and spoken to him on his journey, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. Saul now started to go round with them in Jerusalem, preaching fearlessly in the name of the Lord. But after he had spoken to the Hellenists, and argued with them, they became determined to kill him. When the brothers knew, they took him to Caesarea, and sent him off from there to Tarsus. The churches throughout Judaea, Galilee and Samaria were now left in peace, building themselves up, living in the fear of the Lord, and filled with the consolation of the Holy Spirit. we need not be afraid in God s presence, and whatever we ask him, we shall receive, because we keep his commandments and live the kind of life that he wants. His commandments are these: that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and that we love one another as he told us to. Whoever keeps his commandments lives in God and God lives in him. We know that he lives in us by the Spirit that he has given us. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! Live in me and let me live in you, says the Lord; my branches bear much fruit. Alleluia! Responsorial Psalm (Ps 117:2-4, 15-18, v. 1). I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people. My vows I will pay before those who fear him. The poor shall eat and shall have their fill. They shall praise the Lord, those who seek him. May their hearts live for ever and ever!. All the earth shall remember and return to the Lord, all families of the nations worship before him. They shall worship him, all the mighty of the earth; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust.. And my soul shall live for him, my children serve him. They shall tell of the Lord to generations yet to come, declare his faithfulness to peoples yet unborn: These things the Lord has done.. Second Reading The First Letter of St. John (3:18-24) My children, our love is not to be just words or mere talk, but something real and active; only by this can we be certain that we are the children of the truth and be able to quieten our conscience in his presence, whatever accusations it may raise against us, because God is greater than our conscience and he knows everything. My dear people, if we cannot be condemned by our own conscience, Gospel The Gospel of John (15:1-8) Jesus said to his disciples: I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that bears no fruit he cuts away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes to make it bear even more. You are pruned already, by means of the word that I have spoken to you. Make your home in me, as I make mine in you. As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself, but must remain part of the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, with me in him, bears fruit in plenty; for cut off from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is like a branch that has been thrown away he withers; these branches are collected and thrown on the fire, and they are burnt. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask what you will and you shall get it. It is to the glory of my Father that you should bear much fruit, and then you will be my disciples.
