The Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew THE LAST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY February 11, :30 a.m. Carnival Sunday FESTIVAL CHORAL EUCHARIST AND SERMON This Sunday, on the threshold of Lent, we worship with great festivity in the spirit of the Mardi Gras and Caribbean Carnival traditions. In this joy-filled, but solemn celebration of song, dance, word, prayer and Eucharist, let us give thanks for the transforming power of God s love in Christ. Then, with uplifted spirits, may we embark upon the profoundly spiritual journey of Lent. BCP refers to the Book of Common Prayer. Hymns marked # and service music marked S are found in the Hymnal Hymns marked (LEVAS II) are found in Lift Every Voice and Sing. VOLUNTARY SsAM Drumming Circle GREETING PROCESSION HYMN (all singing) Siyahamba Traditional South African (All singing) Siyahamb(a) ekukhanyen kwenkhos We are marching in the light of God! Hallelujah! Blessed be the One, Holy and Living God And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Hallelujah!

COLLECT FOR PURITY (all in unison) Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. CANTICLE (sung by the choir) Hold to God s Unchanging Hand music by Paul Halley Tina Betz, soloist Time is filled with swift transition, Naught of earth unmoved can stand, Build your hopes on things eternal, Hold to God s unchanging hand. Refrain: Hold to God s unchanging hand, Hold to God s unchanging hand; Build your hopes on things eternal, Hold to God s unchanging hand. Trust in Him who will not leave you, Whatsoever years may bring, If by earthly friends forsaken Still more closely to Him cling. God be with you. And also with you. COLLECT OF THE DAY O God, who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. A CARNIVAL SUNDAY PRAYER (said by all) Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for it is from your bountiful goodness that we have this day to celebrate. May the joy of your presence transfigure us and prepare us for the Lenten season to come. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. All sit for the readings. -2-

THE READINGS At the conclusion of each Reading: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s People. Thanks be to God. FIRST READING 2 Kings 2:1-12 Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. Elijah said to Elisha, Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel. But Elisha said, As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they went down to Bethel. The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you? And he said, Yes, I know; keep silent. Elijah said to him, Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho. But he said, As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they came to Jericho. The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you? And he answered, Yes, I know; be silent. Then Elijah said to him, Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan. But he said, As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you. Elisha said, Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit. He responded, You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not. As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. Elisha kept watching and crying out, Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen! But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. PSALM 50:1-6 (all singing) Deus deorum 1 The Lord, the God of gods, has spoken; * he has called the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. 2 Out of Zion, perfect in its beauty, * God re veals him self in glory. -3-

3 Our God will come and will not keep silence; * before him there is a consuming flame, and round a bout him a raging storm. 4 He calls the heavens and the earth from a bove * to witness the judgment of his people. 5 Gather before me my loyal followers, * those who have made a covenant with me and sealed it with sacrifice. 6 Let the heavens declare the rightness of his cause; * for God him self is judge. SECOND READING 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 If our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. For it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. HYMN # 137 (vv. 1-3) O Wondrous type! Wareham THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 9:2-9 Congregation: Glory to you, Lord Christ Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him! Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. Congregation: Praise to you, Lord Christ -4-

All stand for the Liturgical Affirmation and remain standing or kneel for the prayers. A LITURGICAL AFFIRMATION said in unison THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Let us, God's people, pray. You, O God are supreme and holy. You create our world and give us life. Your purpose overarches everything we do. You have always been with us. You are God. Infinitely generous, Good beyond measure. You came to us before we came to you. You have revealed and proved your love for us in Jesus Christ, who lived and died and rose again. You are with us now. You are God. You, O God, are Holy Spirit. You empower us to be Your Gospel in the world. You reconcile and heal; You overcome death. You are God. We worship you. From the Book of Common Prayer of the Anglican Province of New Zealand O LORD, Our God, guide us away from material distractions that we may lift the Gospel veil to see, listen, and live according to your Word and Wisdom, the dry ground of our being. O LORD, Our God, enfold the leaders of our planet, our country, and our community in a double share of your Spirit. Open blinded minds by a heaven-sent whirlwind, that illuminates and beckons them to the path of your truth, justice, and mercy. We pray especially for: Donald, our President; Tom, Chris, and Lisa, our Members of Congress; John, our Governor; Matt, our County Executive; and Mike, our Mayor. O LORD, Our God, grant comfort and healing to all who suffer in body, mind, or spirit, and lighten the hearts of all who give care and support. We now join our voices to pray aloud for those in need -5-

PEACE O LORD, Our God, the darkness of grief eases in knowing that those we have sent ahead, now live again in your eternal radiance. We pray especially for: Michael Delanye, Carl Golden, Sr., Kay Harper, E. Thomas Meredith, and Richard Tucker. O LORD, Our God, we pause in this moment to offer you our other heartfelt thanksgivings, intercessions, petitions, and memorials, aloud or silently O LORD, Our God, enliven and excite the spirits of all who lead us in your church, that they may be a beacon to guide us across this life's troubled waters toward the wholeness of eternal life in You. We pray especially for: Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Kevin our Bishop; David, our Rector; Lloyd, our Rector Emeritus; Emily and Peter, our Associate Priests; and Maryann, our Lay Pastoral Associate. We also pray for the Anglican Church of Canada; the people of Santa Maria Virgen, Mexico City; and St. Anne's School, Middletown. The Celebrant adds the following prayer. God of gods, Lord of All That Is, arouse our desire to ascend the highest peak our souls can reach, to be dazzled by the heart of Christ ~ where Divine and Human connect ~ and to be transfigured in our own hearts and minds and wills. We ask through Jesus, the beloved image of God, and the mystical breath of the Holy Spirit within us, who together with you reign as One God, now and forever. Amen. The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. ANNOUNCEMENTS -6-

THE HOLY COMMUNION Gluten-free wafers are at the station at the center of the altar railing OFFERTORY *ANTHEM On Holy Ground Geron Davis (b. 1964) Tina Betz, soloist All who are able, stand and sing this hymn as the gifts are brought forward. *HYMN # 208 (LEVAS II) We ve Come This Far By Faith Albert A. Goodson THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Eucharistic Prayer 3 from Enriching our Worship I The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. The Celebrant continues: All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb. You brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all that you create is a sign of hope for our journey; And so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy; SANCTUS and BENEDICTUS (sung by the choir) From A Little Jazz Mass Bob Chilcott (b. 1955) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Celebrant continues: Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all. Your Word has never been silent: Though we turned against you and one another, and abused your creation, you did not abandon us. Of your grace, you came as one of us in Jesus. Through Jesus, your Christ, you have freed us from sin, bringing us into your life, reconciling us to you, and restoring us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and -7-

when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said; Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. And so, remembering now Christ s suffering and death, resurrection and ascension, and awaiting Christ s coming in glory, we present to you these gifts of bread and wine, which your earth has formed and human hands have made. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon them, that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Giver of Life, draw us all together in this sacrament, making us bearers of your justice and peace among the peoples of the earth, and the faithful conscience of your whole creation. In the fullness of time gather us with all who have found favor with you in ages past, into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. Celebrant and Congregation: Blessed are you now and for ever. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER (Contemporary) BCP 364 As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. -8-

POST COMMUNION PRAYER (said by all) BLESSING Eternal God, we thank you for feeding us with the holy food and drink of our Savior Jesus Christ. Tasting the fullness of what we have today, may the experience of our Lenten fast make us more alert and heighten our consciousness, that we may hear your Word and respond to your call. Now send us forth with our hearts full of delight and stirring with readiness for the journey ahead. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen. -9-
