O God, at the glorious transfiguration of your only Son, you confirmed the mystery of our faith by the witness of the disciples and by your own voice from the cloud. Mercifully complete our adoption as your children, and give us, with our King, an inheritance of his glory. CHILDREN S SERMON Children who wish to go to the nursery, may do so following this sermon. The First Reading is from the 34 th chapter of Exodus. First Reading: Exodus 34: When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30 Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. 32 Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. 33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. 34 Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, 35 the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6

Psalm 50:1-6 1 The Lord, the God of / gods, has spoken;* he has called the earth from the rising of the sun / to its setting. 2 Out of Zion, perfect / in its beauty,* God reveals him- / self in glory. 3 Our God will come and will / not keep silence;* before him there is a consuming flame, and round about him a / raging storm. 4 He calls the heavens and the earth / from above* to witness the judgment / of his people. 5 Gather before me my / loyal followers,* those who have made a covenant with me and sealed / it with sacrifice. 6 Let the heavens declare the rightness / of his cause;* for God him- / self is judge. Brief silence for reflection The Second Reading is from the 3 rd and 4 th chapters of 2 Corinthians. Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 3:12-13, 4: Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, 13 not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart. 2 But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God s word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone s conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus sake. 6 For God, who said, Let light shine out of 7

8 darkness, has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel: Mark 9:2-9 2 After six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah. 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, This is my beloved Son; listen to him. 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. 9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. 16 INVITATION TO COMMUNION All are welcome to receive the Lord's Body and Blood who are baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in the bread and wine. HOW WE COMMUNE: When you come forward the pastor will first give you bread to eat. Then, take a cup from the tray. The assistant will pour in wine to drink. Afterward, you will place the empty cup in the tray at the side aisle, and return to your seat. If you are unable to consume wine, you may commune with only the bread. Unbaptized and those who have yet to receive first communion may come forward to receive a blessing. Signify by holding your hands to your chest instead of reaching out for the bread and wine. NURSERY AND BIBLE STORY TIME Children in kindergarten and younger may come downstairs after the Children s Sermon for a short Bible lesson. After the lesson, the children may color the Bible story pages or play in the nursery. The children will return to worship during the Hymn of the Day. "The Dinner Bell" Fundraiser for Faith Friendship Ministries There will be a fundraiser for Faith Friendship Ministries at the restaurant at Oregon Dairy on Tuesday, February 20th from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM. 20% of your dinner bill will be donated to Faith Friendship if you do one of these three things: 1) Mention Faith Friendship Ministries, 2) Show the event flyer (copies on the back table), or 3) Show FFM Facebook post announcing this event. 22 CARE-BAGS FOR THE HOMELESS As part of our ongoing outreach the Social Ministry Committee is looking to sponsor Care-Bags for the Homeless. As we enter the Lenten Season, this outreach can be a great way for you to extend your Lenten Practices. At the moment the committee is looking for Monetary Donations. With the money gathered the Committee will purchase items needed for the homeless and enlist your help on a future Sunday between the Service and Sunday School, to stuff bags. The bags will be then made available to the congregation. How It Works: You carry these bags in your vehicle and should you come across a person in need you simply give them a bag. When you run out of bags simply ask after church and we can resupply you. This is not a new idea and is in practice by others, it is however new to our congregation. It s a wonderful way to show God s Love to those in need. If you would like to sign-up for a Sunday to host Coffee Time, it s as simple as bringing store bought snacks. If you like to bake, homemade goodies are always welcome! Coffee Time is a great opportunity to visit with your Church family. Hope to see you at Coffee Time! ALTAR FLOWERS There are flower sign up sheets on the bulletin board behind the sanctuary for anyone that would like to sponsor flowers on a particular Sunday. You will be responsible for ordering the flowers and picking them up from the florist of your choice and delivering them to the church on Sunday morning of the day you have chosen. You would also be responsible for removing the flowers after the service. You can supply one or two vases of flowers. There is a section for you to fill out on the chart for whom you would like to present the flowers in honor or memory of. Any questions, see June Kreider. WEDNESDAY EVENING PRAYER AND BIBLE STUDY The midweek Lenten service and bible study will begin Feb. 21 st and run through March 21 st beginning at 6:30 pm. The class will be an introduction to the Psalms. Please sign up. If there is enough interest among those who cannot make Wednesday night, we might have a second class Thursday mornings. 26 Building Blocks of Being and Growing as a Disciple Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 2 Corinthians 3:12-13 We learn from our first reading today (Exodus 34) that when Moses came down from Mount Sinai, after speaking with God, that his face shone reflecting the glory of God. He would place a Growing as a Disciple veil over his face until he spoke to God again so that the Israelites would not know the transient nature of this reflection. Paul says that we can be bold because with Jesus the glory of God never fades away. It is said to us at our baptisms, Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Jesus gives us His light when we are baptized into his death and resurrection. Thoughts to Ponder: When Moses first came down from Mt. Sinai, he was not aware that his face shone.
