It is your faith, your wholehearted desire to keep that faith alive and strong and to hand it down to the next generation, and your hard work that made this Mission possible. What was apparently impossible a year ago has become a reality!! A special word of thanks to our Bishop, Mar Jacob Angadiath, for making this dream come true, to Very Rev. Dr. George Madathiparampil, the retiring Vicar General of the Diocese, for encouraging us on our onward journey and showing us the way, to Rev. Fr. It is our prayer that this day remains alive in their hearts and memory all their lives. Thank you to all the teachers for training these children for this moment, and especially to Tomy Paul for giving effective leadership as the Sunday School Principal. At this time of joy and jubilation, let us remember that we have a long way to go. We need a place of our own to come together, to worship together and to train our children in the faith and our tradition and culture. Hopefully, it will also be a place for better community interaction and growth, value education and development, inter-cultural and inter-faith activities. A lot of coordinated hard work, mutual support, sacrifice, prayer and, above all, discernment of God s Will and readiness to surrender to that Will, are essential for success. I am sure that, under the effective leadership of Fr. Elampara and his team of co-workers, the Community will scale new heights in the days to come. And finally, I thank God for making it possible for me to serve this Community for a little while and I thank each and every one of you for your support and cooperation. Joseph Elamparayil, OCD St. Paul wrote: You are fellow citizens of the saints and members of the household of God (Ephesians 2:19). As members of the Catholic Church, we are members of the family of saints. One of the many ways of knowing our family of faith is to know the stories of our saints. St. Ambrose said: The life of the saints is the norm of life for all others. Stories of saints are often fascinating for all, especially for the children. This column is prepared for our beloved children in our community. Dear boys and girls, you may learn the ABCs of our faith by reading Our Faith: Saints, Facts, and Legends. Always ask questions about saints. Save this page and memorize the fascinating facts about saints for an annual Quiz. Remember, great prizes are saved for the Winners. OFL11: Blessed Mother Euphrasia ( ) Blessed Pope John Paul II approved the Decree of the heroic virtues of the Servant of God in 2002, proclaiming Sister Euphrasia (Rose Eluvathingal) of CMC a Venerable of the Holy Catholic Church. On Sunday, December 3, 2006, she became the 5 th Blessed of Kerala, and the 6 th of India. Sr. Euphrasia (Rose) was born on October 17, 1877 as the daughter of Anthony and Kunjethy of Eluvathingal Cherpukaran, in the village of Kattoor, in the Diocese of Trichur, Kerala. Her mother s deep piety and great devotion to the Virgin Mary, had a strong influence on little Rose from her childhood. From the stories that her mother told her, especially about St. Rose of Lima, she grew with a strong desire to practice the virtues, to suffer for Jesus and to be holy. In spite of the strong opposition of her father, Anthony, who wanted Rose to marry into a rich family, she longed to become a Religious Sister. Her intense prayer life, which included the rosary, fasting and abstinence, as well as the rather sudden death of her younger sister, brought about a change of heart in her father, Anthony, who granted Rose permission to enter the convent. In fact, her father accompanied her personally to the Convent of the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC) at Koonammavu, Kerala. CMC, the first indigenous congregation of Syro-Malabar Church, was founded as the Third Order of Carmelites Discalced on February 13, 1866 at Koonammauv. The founder of CMC is Blessed Chavara ( ) who was then, the vicar general of the Syro -Malabar Catholics and one of the founders & the first prior general of the first indigenous congregation for men Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI). Fr. Leopold Beccaro OCD ( ), the Novice Master of the monastery at Koonammauv is the co-founder. Today CMC Sisters are rendering services not only in India but also in continents like Africa, America and Europe. They have 20 Provinces and 6 Regions of the world. On May 10, 1897 Rose became a postulant and took the name Sister Euphrasia of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and on January 10, 1898 she received the holy habit of Carmel. In the community, Sr. Euphrasia led a life of virtues and grew in holiness. On May 24, 1900 St. Mary s Convent was founded in the current Archdiocese of Trichur, and on the same day Sr. Euphrasia made her perpetual vows to God and dedicated herself to God. From 1904 to 1913 Sr. Euphrasia served as a Novice Mistress and formed the future members of her community. Her novices always found in their Mother Euphrasia the heroic virtues of humility, poverty, penance, obedience and abandonment to God s will. Although Sr. Euphrasia wanted to live a hidden life, she was chosen as Superior of the Convent of St Mary at Ollur. She served her community from 1913 to For almost 48 years the convent of St Mary was home to Mother Euphrasia. Observing her life of prayer and holiness, the local people called her Praying Mother, and her Sisters in community referred to her as the Mobile Tabernacle, because the divine presence she kept within her radiated to all she encountered. From the first years of her Religious Life, Sr. Euphrasia had the blessing of the spiritual guidance of Bishop John Menacherry. He ordered her to reveal to him every aspect of her spiritual life, and he wisely kept all of her letters. When his successor, Mar George Alappatt, retired, he entrusted the letters to the Superior of the Congregation of the Carmelites of Trichur with the prophetic words: You will need them. In fact, these letters turned to be precious treasures and an authentic mirror of the spiritual life of Mother Euphrasia. Mother Euphrasia spent much of her day in the convent chapel before the Bl. Sacrament and she also nourished a great love and devotion for Mary. Naturally she was an apostle of the Eucharist and of the Rosary. She also had a profound sense of Church and was deeply concerned by the sorrows and problems of the Church of her day. She offered her mortifications and penances for the conversion of schismatics and asked the novices and children to pray for them. She prayed ardently before the Bl. Sacrament for the Pope, for Bishops, Priests and Religious everywhere. NB: Please do share your suggestions regarding this article with Fr. Joseph at jelampara@yahoo.com/

3 V o l u m e 2 I s s u e 7 S t. J u d e S y r o - M a l a b a r C o m m u n i t y o f N o r t h e r n V i r g i n i a P a g e 3 DUKHRANA THIRUNAL THE FEAST OF ST. THOMAS - ALEX JACOB ARE YOU SATAN S BROTHER OR SISTER? - BLESSY RONY It was a Christmas evening. The church was getting ready for the vigil mass. People were chit chatting outside the church in the hall way as there was time yet to start the mass. Suddenly, Satan appeared in front of them. He was in black attire with a rough face, sharp thorny nails and ruddy eyes. People got scared, screamed and scattered away. There was an old man sitting at the end of a bench and was reading a book. He had a flat affect. He was neither scared nor paid attention to what s happening around him. Satan went to him and asked, Aren t you afraid of me? All the people around you ran away, seeing me. You are the only one left behind. No, I am not, the old man replied. Satan was bit surprised and asked him, Why? It s because, I have been living with your sister for the past 25 years. The old man said and continued to read. Though it is a funny story which many of us might have heard, there is a lot to think about. Are we all Satan s brothers or sisters to our near and dear ones? Are we making our home hell, by losing temper, saying offensive words, or watching ugly media programs? If so, this is the time to change. We should be the role models to our kids. They will automatically absorb all what they are seeing at home just like a sponge. Let us examine our own lives: are we spending any time with our God? Are we giving prime importance to Jesus, more than to anything else in our lives? Do we find time for Sunday holy mass regardless of all our personal matters? If yes, then we are on the right road. The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, said in one of his homilies during mass, We are forced to acknowledge the spread of a secularization which leads to the exclusion of God from life and the increasing disintegration of the family. The families that pray together stay together. Let s all follow the holy family in our lives, and let our children become the little angels to the world.

The Blood of the Savior cleanses us from all our sins. As a Christian, devotion to the Precious Blood is one of our greatest responsibilities. The Blood of Christ is the price of our salvation. There is so much power in the Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. From my own experience, I can say that praying to the precious blood is very powerful. When both of my kids were young, they went through very bad eczema, asthma and food allergy problems. I tried so many medicines, they didn t get healed and I was so frustrated and angry. Then, from my father I came to know more about the power of the precious blood and what it has done and what it is doing for me. Once I started my prayer faithfully, I got the courage to face the sufferings of my kids and gradually I was able to see them get healed. Also, the prayer to the precious blood gave me the wisdom to understand that whatever sufferings we may face in our life is a blessing, because we are getting a chance to share the pain that Jesus has suffered for us on Calvary. Even now when my kids come to me with their small booboos, I tell them to look at a picture of Jesus shedding blood on the cross and instantly they run away admitting that their booboos are nothing when compared to the sufferings of Jesus. The precious blood of Jesus heals, saves, and delivers. In prayer and in faith you can plead the Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ over you and your family. The blood of the spotless lamb applied to the doors of Israelite homes brought protection from God s anger. Likewise, the blood of Jesus Christ brings protection upon us from every attack of the Devil. The Precious Blood Devotion is a daily call to holiness. Sprinkling the blood of Jesus Christ in our heart will protect us from evil, wipe away our sins, and free us from fear, sickness, doubts and anger. During the month of July, we can pay some special honor to the precious blood by praying the chaplet of precious blood everyday with our families. While reciting the prayer we can meditate on the 7 blood sheddings of Jesus. Or we can share the pain he suffered, by giving up pleasure in the form of fasting, prayer, alms-giving etc. Every Thursday night from 11pm to Friday morning at 3am is the Gethsemane Hours (the three hours of agony in the Garden of Gethsemane). During this month, at least one week, we can find some time to pray in Gethsemane hours. There are several traditions people follow in the month of July to honor the precious blood of Jesus. For more information visit the web site below. We can t forget the tears of Mother Mary upon her son s blood sheddings on the cross. Rosary of our lady s tears or since the feast of our lady of Rosa Mystica falls in July (July 13 th ); a novena to our lady of Rosa Mystica can also be prayed as part of our July devotion. Let us all receive Jesus as our personal savior and be the little lambs of Jesus. MEN s FORUM Updates On Saturday, June 18th, the men of St Jude Syro-Malabar Catholic Mission gathered together at Sajith Thoppil s house to celebrate the Father s Day event. The event was a great success where the Men of our community had a chance to share their ideas and enjoy with the peers. Youth Gathering UPDATES The youth group celebrated the youth mass on second Sunday of June. We are in the process of building up a good youth choir team. Youth group has decided to engage in activities to involve everyone to actively participate in the celebration of Holy Mass. The altar service is now completely supported by the youth. It is with the immense support and co-operation from the families of the youth, we are able to better ourselves every month. The youth group is looking forward eagerly to participate in the Jesus Youth retreat on July 31 st as a follow up to the Annual Retreat in June. A Message from Pastor Dennis Hagstrom The Congregation of Saint Andrew Lutheran Church and Pastor Dennis Hagstrom are honored to welcome Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath to our sanctuary as he presides at Confirmation and welcomes those who will receive our Lord Jesus for the first time in the Holy Communion. It is a joy when young people take their rightful place at the Lord's Table, affirm their baptisms and confirm their Christian faith. We are grateful for the witness of your Syro- Malabar mission as we confess together, "one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of us all."

The 26 th of May 2011 was an auspicious day for the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. In the presence of 44 bishops, hundreds of priests and believers, His Beatitude, Mar George (Geevarghese) Alencherry, was elected and installed as the third Major Archbishop of the Syro- Malabar Church. The ceremony was held at St. Mary's Basilica Cathedral; the Holy Mass led by the Curia Bishop and Interim Administrator of the Church, Most Rev. Dr. Bosco Puthur. Among the many luminaries who participated in the momentous functon was Apostolic Nuncio to India, Archbishop Salvatore Pennachio, and His Eminence, Telesphore Cardinal Toppo, President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India. The event was historic by itself as it marked the very first implementation of the powers vested in the Oriental Church s Synod. The synod, met in Kochi to elect a new leader after the passing of Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil. The new Head of Syro-Malabar Church was officially announced, marking the beginning of yet another glorious epoch in the history of Kerala Catholicism. His Eminence, Archbishop Alencherry was born on 1945 in Thuruthy, Kerala. He was ordained priest in 1972 and became bishop of Thuckalay in The new Archbishop has served as the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry, and at he time of his election, he was the Secretary of the Syro-Malabar Synod and the Chairman of Synodal Commission for Catechesis. During his speech, the newly appointed Archbishop, emphasized that his services would not just be limited to fellow believers, but also for all the Indian people and accentuated on his policy of ecumenism, by promoting inter-rite relations and inter-faith harmony. His Beatitude repeatedly and humbly stressed the need for the unity of the three Catholic Rites within the Malayali Catholic Community. He urged them to forget the past wrongs and work together for the betterment of humanity. The new Archbishop comes across as a pious genuine loyalist, who heralds change of the old order - a change which is much needed and much welcomed. The appointment of the new Major Archbishop through election marks the beginning of a new chapter, more glorious than the previous ones, in the history of the Syro-Malabar Church. We all look forward to being a part of this history, which is about to be created and will serve as a milestone for generations to come. MAR JACOB ANGADIATH - THE GOOD SHEPHERD OF SYRO MALABAR CATHOLIC CHURCH IN AMERICA - JOANNA SHAJU March 13, 2001: What a joyous day that was in the history of Syro-Malabar Church. On that historic day, His Holiness Pope John Paul II announced a Diocese for North American Syro-Malabar faithful and Chicago became the very first Syro-Malabar Diocese to be established outside of India. This announcement was the proof that Syro-Malabar Catholics had outgrown the tiny state of Kerala and now has widespread roots all over the world. To lead the newly created Chicago Diocese, Pope John II selected a humble but accomplished priest who had been working hard for a couple of decades in the North American Catholic Community, Mar Jacob Angadiath! That was 10 years ago! Since then, under Bishop Angadiath s leadership, the Syro-Malabar Church has grown to 16 parishes and 43 missions in the United States. Mar Jacob Angadiath was born on October 26, 1945, at Periappuram in Elanji Panchayat of Ernakulam District. He had three siblings; and after his father s death in 1948 his mother and immediate family raised him. After completing high school at Namakuzhy Government High School in 1962, he joined the Good Shepherd Minor Seminary in Palai for his studies for the priesthood. He continued his studies in Philosophy and Theology at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor, Kottayam. He was ordained priest for Pala Diocese on January 5, 1972 by His Excellency Mar Sebastian Vayalil, the first Bishop of Pala. Mar Joseph Pallikaparampil, Bishop of Palai, who was in charge of the Overseas Mission of the Syro-Malabar Church, sent him to Dallas, Texas, USA to serve the Syro-Malabar faithful in that region. Mar Angadiath came to the United States as the first official priest to begin a mission overseas in He came to Dallas in 1984 and started the Syro-Malabar Mission and established the St. Thomas the Apostle Indian Catholic Church in 1992 in Garland for the Syro Program -Malabar faithful. He served the commmunity there for 17 years and was then transferred to Chicago to minister to the Syro-Malabar community of Chicago. He took charge as the Director of the Mar Thoma Shleeha Syro-Malabar Mission in Chicago on July 1, He has been working tirelessly, ever since, for the growth of the Syro-Malabar Church in North America. Today, under Mar Jacob Angadiath s leadership, the St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Chicago extends all over the USA; and he is the permanent Apostolic Visitator to Canada. Northern Virginia Syro-Malabar community is blessed to have Mar Angadiath s support and guidance right from the beginning every step of the way. This week, when we take a big step forward in the growth of our Community, we are grateful to have Bishop Angadiath present in person to elevate our Community and to establish the St. Jude Syro-Malabar Catholic Mission of Northern Virginia and to share our joy and hope. Our community whole-heartedly welcomes Bishop Angadiath to Northern Virginia.
