We are glad you have joined us for this service of worship and the fellowship of this congregation. We hope that you will be both comforted and challenged by the Word of God for us today. If you are new to our community, we hope you will consider making this your church home. Any of our worship leaders or ushers will be able to help with your questions. If you are already a member, be sure to extend a friendly greeting to those around you, starting with someone you don t know yet. Please silence all electronic devices before Worship begins. Childcare is provided in the Church House for infants and toddlers up to three years old. Parents may also want to know there is a nursery in the basement of the Meeting House, where there is a speaker system through which you may listen to the service.

2 PREPARING FOR WORSHIP We Are All Betrayers because we are all betrayers, taking silver and eating body and blood and asking (guilty) is it I and hearing him say yes it would be simple for us all to rush out and hang ourselves but if we find grace to cry and wait after the voice of morning has crowed in our ears clearly enough to break our hearts he will be there to ask each again do you love me? ~ written by Luci Shaw in A Widening Light: Poems of the Incarnation COMING BEFORE GOD PRELUDE for Organ O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß [BWV 623] Johann Sebastian Bach, c This tune was set to a text by Seybald Heyden, written in 1525, which served as a Passion narrative and interpretation for the Lutheran Good Friday liturgy. The treatment of the chorale melody in this setting suggests Bach had the first of twenty-three stanzas in mind. O man, lament your great sin, for the sake of which Christ left God s bosom and came to earth. Of a pure, gentle virgin, Jesus was born for us to be the mediator. He gave life to the dead and put aside all sickness, until the time arrived that he should be sacrificed for us. He bore the heavy burden of our sins stretched out on the cross.

People: Let us approach the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy. Minster: Trusting in Christ s love for us, let us confess our sins. As we gather this evening to remember our Lord s suffering and death on the cross, we pray for courage and determination to live as Jesus lived. We did not choose to be born in an age of violence, social inequality, intolerance and war, but help us not to be afraid to confront the challenges of our time. May injustice anger us; may the gospel inspire us; may Christ s faith guide us as we take up our cross daily and offer our lives as instruments of peace and reconciliation in this nation and in the world. People: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. By your holy cross you have redeemed us and, by your wounds, we were made well. Minister: Holy God, before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come, and, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. Scholars interpret this text as an allegory of the Crucifixion in which the wounded Christ -- represented here and in other medieval allegory as a knight -- bleeds eternally for the sins of humankind while Mary (a may ) weeps night and day. The stone inscribed with Corpus Christi represents that stone that closed Jesus tomb.
