Year Two SACRAMENT INFORMATION PACKET Our Lady of Angels Allen, Texas
Dear Parents, I am so excited to be a part of this time in your families lives. Helping our children learn and take this important step toward initiation in the Church is a privilege and an honor. The sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist are gifts that bring us closer to Christ. As we work together to bring our children to these sacraments, we are called to renew and deepen our understanding and relationship with Jesus. As parents, you are the first and primary teachers of your children in the ways of faith as you promised at their baptism. It is my desire that we help you bring your children closer to our faith. Our Lady of Angels looks forward to celebrating these wonderful sacraments with you and your child. Together we can work to truly prepare your child for these sacraments of initiation. Through the eyes of your children we hope you will experience the sacraments anew and that God will touch you more deeply with His love. In Christ s peace, Sandy Hernandez Elementary School Ministry Coordinator Our Lady of Angels ext fax shernandez@ourladyofangels.com

Our Lady of Angels Sacrament Formation Eucharist and Reconciliation Two Year Schedule Year One Year Two Year One Family Retreats Year Two At Our Lady of Angels, formation for First Communion and First Reconciliation is done in two ways. 1. Faith Formation classes are the ones that are grade specific and held during 24 to 26 weeks a year. With the guidance of catechists and the Christ Our Life curriculum, children review and grow in knowledge and understanding of the basics of our Catholic faith. These classes also provide an opportunity for families to continue formation at home. Student folders hold information sent home by the catechists as well as a calendar of lessons. Loyolapress.com is also a great resource for families of faith. 2. Sacrament Formation is lead by a series of four family retreats, two in Year One and two more in Year Two. These retreats are a communal opportunity to learn together as families and provide examples and ways to help build families of faith. This gives the family the opportunity to continue the faith journey at home, connecting life lived within and outside the parish to one of faith. It gives parents the tools to help children understand the gifts of the sacraments and the ability to grow and deepen their relationship with God through prayer, reflection, participation in Mass and other Catholic traditions. 3
Year One Sacrament Formation Student is enrolled in either an elementary or middle school class to build a foundation of knowledge of our faith Two retreats in the Fall begin the two-year journey for parents and child The retreats are intended to augment what parents are already doing or to sow the seeds of parent led catechesis Retreats o One: The Commandments, Sin and Forgiveness o Two: Overview of The Mass Year Two Sacrament Formation Student is enrolled in either an elementary or middle school class to build a foundation of knowledge of our faith Two retreats in the Spring finalize preparation for Reconciliation and Eucharist for parent and child The retreats are intended to augment what parents are already doing or to sow the seeds of parent led catechesis Retreats o One: Reconciliation o Two: Eucharist All retreats are required. We provide these dates to families as soon as the calendar can be published. If your family is unable to go to a retreat, you must contact Sandy Hernandez to see what arrangements can be made. Missing retreat or more than 20% of faith formation classes may delay your child s sacrament. Communication is important to help us work with you on your child s faith journey. 4

Family Retreats The parent-child retreats on January 30 th and April 9 th are opportunities for you and your child to prepare for the sacraments and share the joy of the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. These are required parent and student retreats where we pray, inform and learn, finalizing your child s two year journey toward Confession and First Communion. We will use ritual, crafts, games and prayer to give your family the tools to work on preparing at home and at Mass. The retreats will begin with mass in the Worship Center and continue with other activities in our Faith Formation Building. The January 30 th retreat will concentrate on Reconciliation and the April 9 th retreat will be about Eucharist. Both of these retreats are mandatory and are the equivalent of three classes. These retreats are formation for the sacrament. Baptismal Certificates Did you know that the church where you were baptized keeps the records of your sacraments? That is why we need your child s baptismal certificate. This gives us the information we need to inform your child s church of record that they have received the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. Please supply a copy of your child s baptismal certificate no later than December 6 th. We do not need the original. If your child was baptized at Our Lady of Angels, please notify us by so that we may note that in our records. Sacramental records are kept separately from our student records. All children should be baptized in the Church to make their First Communion. If your child was baptized in a church other than Roman Catholic, please contact the office as soon as possible so that we can work with you to help your child receive the sacraments. 6
First Reconciliation Ceremony On Saturday, February 27 th, we will gather at the Worship Center to celebrate our students First Reconciliation. The plans for Saturday are: The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10am. Please arrive by 9:45am and check in at the table. You may sit as a family anywhere in the sanctuary. Your family will be handed a card when you arrive that will tell you the group that you are in for confession. Groups are assigned in the order you arrive for the service. There is a prayer service before confessions are heard which will guide our children through the examination of conscience. Please let your child know that this is a special ceremony for their first confession and that their next confession may be different. We have given them booklets and Act of Contrition prayer cards in class to help them and they are encouraged to bring them with them on February 27 th. Once the service is over, we will line students up to wait for confession. In order to encourage a silent and prayerful atmosphere, we will ask that the students wait with their families until we call them to confession. Each student will receive a cross as a gift to commemorate their first confession. We give this to you when you check in so you can give it to your child after they leave confession. Please have your child wear this cross to Mass every weekend beginning this weekend as an outward sign of their journey toward First Communion. At all Masses on February 27 th and February 28 th all students who have made their first confession will be recognized at the end of Mass by Msgr. Bell. We will give certificates and their lambs to the students the week of March 20 th. Teachers and families are welcome to celebrate the sacrament after all the students have made their confession. Families are free to leave once everyone in the family who wishes to do so has gone to Confession and completed his or her penance. There will be a reception in the Lobby of the Faith Formation Building with some refreshments for our students after confession. 7
First Communion Mass Due to the size of this year s First Communion class, we will have two Masses. All students must attend rehearsal prior to First Communion. Those with liturgical assignments will have an additional rehearsal. Session Sunday 9:15am Sunday 10:45am All students in 3 rd Middle School Monday 4pm Monday 6pm Tuesday 4pm First Communion Mass May 7 th, :30am May 7 th, :30pm Rehearsal * Wednesday, May 4 th, pm Thursday, May 5 th, pm Any student with a Mass assignment (see pg. 11 for more details) will have an additional rehearsal on Tuesday, May 3 rd ) First Communion Mass Suggested Dress Suggested dress for all students is Sunday dress. Girls dresses should cover their shoulders and have a modest neckline. Simple street length is recommended and most girls wear white. A veil or headpiece is optional. Gloves are not allowed since they cannot receive communion wearing them. Boys should wear dress slacks and shirt. Suit jacket and tie are optional. The students should not carry anything. Please let us know if you have any questions or need assistance with dress for First Communion. First Communion Group Photo and Gift There is a group photo taken immediately after Mass. Each student will receive a gift from the parish to commemorate their First Eucharist. Gifts will be distributed at the reception after Mass. 8
What is a Sacramental Banner? In recognition of our child s celebration of the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, we are asking all parents to prepare a sacramental banner, which will be displayed in the Worship Center the weekend of First Communion. The banner is an opportunity for you to help your child connect First Eucharist with Baptism as the second Sacrament of Initiation. Additionally, it provides witness to the rest of the parish, giving them an opportunity to share in our joy. It is optional. If you and your child choose not to make a banner, please let the office know. This banner can be made in the following way: You can make the banner yourself, using the directions in this packet You can have the banner made by someone else for a fee. There is information included for two different services that will make your child s banner on the following pages. We will try to have examples of banners on display at the retreats. 9
For this project you will need: Directions for Sacramental Banner 1. A piece of fabric, felt or canvas, measuring approximately 18 wide by 24 long 2. Decorations to represent the sacraments (see directions for details) 3. A wooden dowel, 4 inches wider than the width of your banner of decorative rope to hang the banner The banner should be approximately 18 wide by 24 long. It can be made of any material. Canvas, felt and broadcloth cotton all work well, but it is up to your personal taste and choice. Sew a hem across the top leaving either end open so that the wooden dowel can be inserted. The banner should have your child s baptismal name listed on the top. Along the left side, either list the sacraments or place symbols for Baptism, Reconciliation and Eucharist. Again, this is entirely your choice. In past years parents have embroidered, used fabric paint, or purchased decals, which were sewed, ironed or glued on. (Hobby Lobby is a good source for this.) Across from each name or symbol, list the date of your child s receipt of the sacrament. Insert the wooden dowel into the top hem. Tie the rope at either end of the dowel to create a hanger for the banner. Please glue the rope to the dowel. Put the banner on a hanger when you deliver it to the office. 17 Opportunities to Help at Mass Parents have several ways they can help. Making ribbons for the banners, wrapping gifts, Eucharistic Ministers and Ushers are just some of the ways you can help. Siblings can also help as altar servers. Please sign up by contacting the office. There are several opportunities for students to participate in the Mass. They are: Altar Dressers Cross and Candle Carriers Banner Carriers Gift Bearers Readers We will choose all positions except readers by lottery at the Eucharist Retreat. Readers will audition during class times in the weeks after the Eucharist Retreat. There is an additional rehearsal time for these liturgy assignments. Photos We have made arrangements with a professional photographer for your child. You can make an appointment to have an individual photo taken. You can also have the photographer take a photo of your child receiving the Body of Christ during Mass. A group photo will also be taken after Mass and will be available for purchase. Sign up information and costs for all photos will be available at the April 13 th retreat. Hamilton Classic Photography will take formal portraits by appointment on Wednesday, May 4 th from 4 6pm and on Thursday, May 5 th from 4 6pm. We will have an order form available at the April 9 th retreat. Hamilton will also take photos of students receiving the Body of Christ and a group photo of the entire group of students. Information will be available on order forms. There are two poses, a kneeler and an arbor. Appointment times are specific for the pose. Please pick a pose so that we can give you an appropriate time. Please order all photos in advance. A price sheet and samples of the photographer s past work will be available to see at the retreat on March 28 th. Families may take their own photos during the Mass but we ask that flash photographs may be taken only during the processional and recessional. No flash pictures may be taken during the liturgy; a photographer must use natural lighting only, so as not to disrupt the sacredness of the ceremony. Photographers are not allowed in the altar area during the ceremony or within view of the people. 15
