We are looking forward to going back to Camp Elk Shoals in the mountains of North Carolina this year. We had a great time last year tubing the river, making crafts, singing around campfires, hiking through the woods, playing outdoor sports, and learning about our Holy Faith and Tradition. All of this was done in a spiritually edifying environment that emphasized Bible study, worship and prayer, the Liturgy of the Church, our Anglican heritage, and our formation in the Christian moral life. The Anglican Life Adventure Camp is a truly wonderful away-from-home experience that deepens and grows our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Church. Quick notes about ALAC: Camp Dates: June 15 th through June 21 st Admission Policy: All returning campers will be admitted first, if application and fee is received by May 10 th. After May 10 th, all applications will be accepted on a first come first enrolled policy. New campers who submit an application before April 1 st will be wait listed until April 1 st. Ages: 8 to 15 years of age plus previous ALAC campers who are now 16. 2 Page 2 Ecclesia Anglicana Diocese of the West St. Dunstan s Dillon, CO St. Dunstan s is still a small congregation, but that does not hinder God in doing great things. The adult son of a couple in our church lives and works in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In October his parents called asking urgently for prayers. They had just received word that John had been the victim of a vicious attempted murder. His throat had been slashed and John had been left to die alone in his home. For two days he lay there unconscious in a pool of drying blood. After two days, he miraculously regained consciousness sufficiently to drive himself to the hospital, where he immediately lapsed again into unconsciousness for five more days. He was in multi-organ failure, and though he now was receiving excellent surgical and medical care, the outcome remained in doubt. Would he live? Would he be able to talk? Had he suffered permanent brain damage? Our congregation assembled at church that evening for prayer, based primarily on The Order for the Visitation of the Sick (BCP p.308), whose Psalms and prayers proved most apt. John s mother was scheduled for urgent delicate cervical spine surgery, and she and her husband could not fly to Sao Paulo to be with their son. Two days later, after the Sunday Eucharist, she was anointed, as planned, before her surgery (which went well). John s father was also anointed as proxy for John, since John was thousands of miles out of our reach. A few hours later John s parents learned that he had regained consciousness that day and was able to talk. Sunday, November 10, without our being forewarned, John and his father walked into church to worship with us his mother was still at home recovering from her surgery. We had had no report for several days and understood only that he was about to get out of the hospital. Extra prayers of thanksgiving were offered joyously during the service for what God had done! As a former physician, I can attest that it is not humanly possible for a person suffering acute blood loss sufficient to lose consciousness quickly and go into kidney and other organ failure and then spontaneously to recover briefly two days later and drive himself to the hospital. St. Gabriel the Archangel Anglican Church Suisun City, California Fr. George Ates+ invited the Rev. J. Michael Bowhay+ (Ret) from Pacific Grove, CA to visit St. Gabriel's. He preached the sermon and assisted Fr. George+ with the Eucharist. We truly enjoyed his visit and hope to see him again very soon. While vacationing in Oregon, one of our parishioners visited friends who gave St. Gabriel's seven 1940 Hymnals, a Prie Dieu folding Kneeler, an individual padded Kneeler, brass Missal Stand, two silver tone Offering Plates, and many other church items. Thanks to the folks in Oregon for the gifts and thanks to our parishioner for transporting them back to Suisun City. The Church Committee purchased an additional 12 steel folding chairs for use in St. Gabriel's. We now we have a total of 16 chairs. They are Example of a Prie Dieu folding Kneeler burgundy in color with 2-1/2 inch thick seat padding and have great lumbar support. A new 36 candle lighter/snuffer with the matching candle lighter stand, Hosanna Light Paschal Candle and Paschal Candle Holder were donated.

3 Ecclesia Anglicana Page 3 Diocese of Mid-America +Larry L. Shaver Bishop Ordinary 1) The Rev. Stephen Sommerrock has been appointed as the Priest-in-Charge of our new mission in Greenfield, Indiana, Anglican Church of the Holy Spirit 2) St. Joseph's Anglican Church in New Braunfels, Texas, under the leadership of The Rev. Canon Gregory L. Wilcox, is undergoing a complete refurbishment of their parish hall and participating in a Capital Campaign to improve their worship facilities in the coming years. 3) The Rev. John W. Berry of St. Augustine, Florida, canonically resident in the DEUS, has been appointed by me to serve as the Canon Missioner of the DMA. He is now styled the Rev. Canon John W. Berry. Canon John will assist us in the development of new missions for our Diocese as well as provide clergy training and development. 4) Bishop Shaver announced the Call for the Election of a Bishop Coadjutor for the DMA on November 22, The election for a Bishop Coadjutor of this Diocese will be held on February 22, 2014 at the Anglican Church of St. Andrew the Evangelist in Merrillville, Indiana. 5) Mr. Richard Watson, of St. Paul's Anglican Church in Cincinnati, Ohio, has been appointed by me with +Walter's approval to serve on the ACA/APA Reconciliation Committee on behalf of the DMA. Diocese of Eastern United States St. Alban s Church Joppa, Maryland Well another Advent and Christmas season has come and gone. It was a wonderful time as usual. I would like to thank the church for the generous Christmas gifts - financial and otherwise. Your love and support for me and my family and my ministry means the world to me. St. Alban s is a truly fantastic place to serve! I also would like to thank my friend Father Jason Catania, Pastoral Administrator of Mt. Calvary Church in downtown Baltimore for lending us the gorgeous white solemn high vestment set (complete with a humeral veil for the subdeacon) for use at our Christmas services. Formerly an Episcopalian parish, Mt. Calvary is now an Anglican-Use parish of the Roman Catholic Church. Incidentally another prominent Anglo-Catholic parish downtown St. Alban s Church. 4 Page 4 Ecclesia Anglicana St. Michael s the Archangel Matthews, NC Sept. 21: Ordination to Diaconate of Orville Michael Cawthon, Sr. On Saturday, September 21, 2013, St. Michael the Archangel Church, in Charlotte, North Carolina, was filled to near capacity to witness the ordination of Mike Cawthon to the sacred diaconate. The Rt. Rev. Chandler Jones, Suffragan Bishop in the Diocese of the Eastern United States, on behalf of the Ordinary of the Diocese, took order for the ordination. Mike and his wife Debbie have been longtime members of St. Michael's Church and he has been studying for the past few years, responding the call to serve the Church in its ordained ministry. "Mr. Mike," as he fondly is called by the children throughout the Diocese, is well known for his work at Anglican Life Adventure Camp, the diocesan youth camp. This next summer, the kids will have to start calling him "Father Mike." St. Michael's Church celebrated in grand style with a wonderful feast, full of fun and fellowship following the ordination. Mike is the latest of many men from this congregation who have offered themselves for the service of the Church. Please pray his ministry may be fruitful in leading sheep to the pasture of the Chief Bishop and Shepherd, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. McAdenville (Christmas Town USA) Light Tour: Kids both young and old enjoyed the light show at Christmas Town USA. An added blessing was that we had perfect timing both nights with the rainy weather breaking just in time for our viewing pleasure and the best part was there wasn t much traffic so there was no long wait. The kids enjoyed the box dinner of hot dogs, chips and cookies provided by St. Martha s Guild on the night of the Feast of St. Nicholas Tour. A big thank you goes out to our chauffeurs Father Rich and Father Michael.

5 Ecclesia Anglicana Page 5 Church of St. Francis of Assisi Jonesboro, Georgia New Rector in Jonesboro On Sunday, October 27, 2013, the Reverend G. Allen Fisher was installed by the Most Reverend Walter H. Grundorf as the Second Rector of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Jonesboro, Georgia at the principal service of Holy Communion at 10:00 a.m. Fr. Fisher began serving the parish in 2012 as the stated supply clergyman and the parish embraced his ministry and desired his continued presence among them. The parish celebrated this important event by holding an old-fashioned fish fry for family and friends the night before the great event on Saturday evening. St. Alban s Church Continued offered us the use a solemn high set in cloth of gold. We will see about using that one for Easter. It is really nice that churches can help each other out... even if they are in different ecclesiastical jurisdictions. And I would also like to thank Fr. Bill Smith and Fr. Don Edelmann for their help at the Masses, the former for celebrating the services as I was floored with a bad cold and lost voice. I hope to have them both more involved in St. Alban s in the New Year as their schedules permit. Thanks as well to our indefatigable server and altar guilds. We could not have had such nice services without them, and in the New Year. And of course I am remiss if I did not thank our fabulous organist, Barbara Jones for her beautiful playing, and also our aspirant for Holy Orders, Tyler Phass for his gorgeous solos on Advent 4 and during Christmastide. Some of us may have wished for even more at our Christmas services: a large, sonorous choir - maybe of men and boys - to sing classic pieces from the great Anglican choral repertoire; a huge cathedral-like building with pillars and stained glass; another Christmas pageant; and so on. Please note that we can indeed do that stuff and more if people show up and give of their time, talent, and treasure to make it happen! Woody Allen once said, 80% of life is just showing up. (and I would add to that...showing up on time. ) The Church consists of people, and it is people that make things happen, so I encourage everyone to ramp up his or her involvement in parish life so we can do even more to grow and expand our ministry for the glory of God and to reach this lost and fallen world for our Lord Jesus Christ! 6 Page 6 Ecclesia Anglicana Annual DEUS Youth Ski Trip: Teenagers and Chaperones from four churches in the Diocese of the Eastern United States spent the Martin Luther King weekend enjoying the frigid temperatures and snowy conditions in western North Carolina on the annual diocesan youth skiing trip. The churches participating in the trip this year were All Saints Church, Mills River, NC, St. Alban's Cathedral, Oviedo, FL, St. Paul's Church, Melbourne, FL, and St. Mary the Virgin Church, Delray Beach, FL. The chaperones guiding the trip were Fr. Erich Zwingert, All Saints, Mrs. Jo Ellen McLean, St. Alban's, and Miss Katie Zwingert and Mr. Nathan Powali from St. Mary's.
