The Twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost November 11, 2018 Holy Eucharist (Rite II) - 10:30 a.m. Note: All baptized Christians are welcome to the Lord s Table in this place. You can stand or kneel at the altar rail. Extend a raised palm to receive a wafer, which you can either eat immediately or wait for a Eucharistic Minister to dip in the wine and place on your tongue. If you have eaten your bread when the chalice comes, hold the cup at the bottom and direct it to your mouth for a sip of wine. For those who do not wish to drink the wine, just cross your arms over your chest when the cup comes by. Stay at the altar rail as long as you wish.

A Reading from Ruth 3:1-5; 4: Naomi her mother-in-law said to Ruth, My daughter, I need to seek some security for you, so that it may be well with you. Now here is our kinsman Boaz, with whose young women you have been working. See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. Now wash and anoint yourself, and put on your best clothes and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, observe the place where he lies; then, go and uncover his feet and lie down; and he will tell you what to do. She said to her, All that you tell me I will do. So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When they came together, the LORD made her conceive, and she bore a son. Then the women said to Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without next-of-kin; and may his name be renowned in Israel! Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. 7 THE GOSPEL Mark 12:38-44 Gospeler: People: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. As Jesus taught, he said, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation. He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. Gospeler: People: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. THE SERMON The Rev. Gordon Hamilton THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the

8 Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home. By your will they were created and have their being. From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another. Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight Again and again, you called us to return. 13 At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving, We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. Lord God of our Fathers; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. 20 An invitation for ministry within our own community: Promise Neighborhoods next community workdays will be Saturday Oct 20 th and November 17 th. They will meet at Resurrection of Life Ministries, 289 Brooklyn at 9am and work on rehabilitating/renovating/reclaiming a former drug house until noon. What a truly wonderful way to help our community. ================================================================== Volunteers are needed to help assemble and deliver Thanksgiving meals. CHRIST CHURCH OUTREACH HOPE Needs: The first Sunday of each month is designated as HOPE Sunday at Christ Church. Please consider contributing to this wonderful organization. They are especially in need of canned chicken, peanut butter, jelly, juice, canned fruit, canned peas, Vienna sausages, tuna, stuffing mix, rice, sugar free juice, sugar free jelly, and oatmeal. Food for HOPE needs to be placed in the shopping cart for the offering each Sunday.

22 Greetings from the Chancellor of the Exchequer, As we look forward to that wonderful time of a new church year with the season of Advent and celebration of the birth of our Lord, it is also the time of the year that the difficult issue of financial reality needs to rear its ugly head. As we at Christ Church approach 2019, we must also grapple with some significant issues, not the least of which include the search for a music director / organist as well as planning for the ultimate retirement of our priest has been a pretty normal financial year in most respects. We have followed our budget and have not incurred any significant expenditures. I project that we will finish the year in line with the budget we approved a year ago but that still means it will have taken more funds to sustain our church than the income provided. Fancy words that mean we will spend more than we take in in the neighborhood of $ also marks the fifth consecutive year we have not accepted our assessment from the Diocese. We have had cheerful givers that have made contributions that are designated for the Diocese and these funds have been forwarded on to them. Even without making budgeted contributions to the Diocese, we have continued to operate with a deficit for the eighth consecutive year. As I and your vestry deal with the budgeting issues for 2019, we look at the harsh reality of projecting income and expenses and how to plan for the certainties of maintaining our physical property, paying the usual expenses and compensating our dedicated staff. The reality of our budget is that there are VERY FEW opportunities to reduce our expenses and the only way to have a balanced budget is to increase our income / contributions. Our income growth line has been positive over the last few years and we hope and pray that will continue. Unfortunately, we anticipate that our budget will remain in deficit for 2019 at about the same amount as we will finish Again, this will be without budgeting for a Diocesan assessment contribution. There is a pledge form included here for you to make a pledge for I urge everyone to search deeply and prayerfully consider their commitment to Christ Church. Please fill it out and return it to my attention at your earliest convenience. I am honored to be your treasurer and to help our parish shepherd the gifts that are given to further the missions of Christ Church.
