4 One glance at nepal Nepal rises in the east from Mechi and sets in the west at Mahakali. Area : 147,181 sq. km Geography : Nepal borders India at south and China at north Capital : Kathmandu Population: About 30 million Language : Nepali is the national language. However, travel-trade people understand and speak English as well.

6 Nepal facts and figures Nepal - occupying only 0.1% of the earth - is home to: 2% of all the flowering plants in the world 8% of the world's population of birds (more than 848 species) 4% of mammals on earth 11 of the world's 15 families of butterflies (more than 500 species) 600 indigenous plant families 319 species of exotic orchids
7 Rich History Nepal has a long and rich history. It is the place where kingdoms rose and fell, palaces and temples were built and rebuilt, art and cultures are refined and protected. o Recorded history began B.C. o Many dynasties produced vast amounts of cultural artifacts. Kathmandu city is the historic center and the Capital of Nepal. It is surrounded by green hills and scattered with temples and shrines, and traditional villages.
8 Cultural diversity Great king prithivi narayan shah once quoted napal as garden of 4 caste and 36 sub-caste. o Nepal is a Hindu state. However it has tremendous religious tolerance for the many faiths practiced within its territory. Hinduists 86.5% Buddhists 7.8% Muslims 3.5% There is unity in diversity
9 Kathmandu: the capital Kathmandu is called the city of gods and temples It is an ancient city located in the lap of himalayas There are seven world heritage sites in the UNESCO s list of world heritage within the Kathmandu valley.
10 Kathmandu: the city of gods and temples Pashupatinath temple : The Temple of Living Beings This astonishing architectural beauty stands as symbol of faith, religion, culture and tradition. UNESCO listed World Cultural Heritage Site. The most sacred temple of Hindu Lord Shiva in the world. Pashupatinath Temple's existence dates back to 400 A.D. The richly-ornamented pagoda houses the sacred linga or phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come to pay homage to this temple.
11 Kathmandu durbar square : Cluster of Temples and Palaces Listed as one of the eight Cultural World Heritage site by UNESCO Cluster of ancient temples, palaces, courtyards and streets that date back to the 12th and 18th centuries The square is known to be the social, religious and urban focal point of the Capital City. It houses the King Tribhuwan Memorial Museum and the Mahendra Museum.
12 Patan durbar square : the ancient square Durbar Square complex, situated in the center of Patan city, houses the residence of the former Patan royal family. Patan Square and its surroundings are good specimen of ancient Newari architecture. Several multi-sized and multi-styled temples occupy the western part of the complex. Main among these are Krishna Temple, Bhimsen Temple and the Golden Temple of Hiranya Varna.
13 Bhaktapur durbar square : the land of devotees It is an assortment of pagoda and shikhara-style temples grouped around a fifty-five-window palace of brick and wood. It highlights the idols of ancient kings perched on top of stone monoliths, the guardian deities looking out from their sanctuaries The wood carvings in very place - struts, lintels, tympanums, gateways and windows - all seem to form a well orchestrated symphony
14 Changu narayan temple : The essence of kathmandu valley Kathmandu valley is guarded by four narayan, changu narayan being one, other three are Bisankhu narayan, Ichangu narayan and Sesh narayan. The oldest temple in Kathmandu valley came in existence in 4th century. A Vishnu idol with ten heads and ten arms is a fine example of stone carving from the 5th century. The temple stands as the epitome of culture, religion, history and faith of the Kathmandu valley.
15 Swyambhunath : The Most Enigmatic Holy Shrine Situated on the top of a hill, west of Kathmandu, is one of the most popular, holy and instantly recognizable symbols of Nepal. The temple is colloquially known as the Monkey temple' because of the large tribe of roving monkeys who guard the temple. 365 steps lead to the Temple that is believed to be 'Self-Created' or 'Self-Existence'.
16 Bouddhanath Stupa The stupa, a well-known Buddhist pilgrimage site, is included in World Heritage Cultural site list by UNESCO. With diameter of about 100m and 40m height, Bouddhanath holds its place among the largest stupas in the world. After 1959, many Tibetans arrived and settled in Bouddhanath area. Lhosar, the Tibetan new year festival, is the most popular festival celebrated at Bodhanath Stupa.
17 Lumbini : Centre of Holy Faith One of the most important historical sites in south western part of Nepal is endowed by nature with rich natural beauty. Lumbini, birthplace of Lord Buddha, is the centre of holy faith for the millions of Buddhists all over the world. One of the most important historical sites in the country, UNESCO world heritage site.
18 Lumbini Garden Lord Buddha had taken birth in Lumbini Garden makes it a place of reverence. A collosal stone pillar built by the great Indian emperor Ashoka is also here. Account of the birth of Buddha is inscribed on it.
19 Mayadevi Temple The temple is remarkable in the way Maya Devi is shown giving birth to Lord Buddha. Credit of discovering the temple, in 1895, goes to a German archaeologist. Devoted to Maya Devi, the mother of Lord Buddha, the temple attracts praise for its architectural beauty

21 Epitome of scenic beauty : Pokhara The world-famous tourist destination Pokhara is 15 minutes flight from Kathmandu or 5-6 hours travel by bus. o Lakes : Flowing with All Their Beauty Majestic, splendid and holy... the lakes of Pokhara are revered not only for their natural beauty but also for the spiritual importance attached to them. A relaxing boat drive on Phewa lake of Pokhara is one of the most soothing experiences in Nepal.
22 The Phewa, Begnas and Rupa lakes provide enough space for boating experiences. Phewa Lake is Pokhara's prime attraction for photographers, boaters and shore side strollers.
23 Pokhara, set in a lush topical alley, with a backdrop of the Annapurna range, is blessed with many lakes and is the most famous spot for boating activities.

25 Royal Chitwan National Park One of the most important sub-tropical parks in Indian subcontinent with an area of 932 sq. km. There are more than 43 species of mammals, over 450 species of birds, and more than 45 species of amphibians and reptiles in the park. Known for diversity of eco-systems. Within the park are Churia hills, ox-bow lakes, and the flood plains of Rapti, Reu and Narayani rivers. Wildlife Attractions : Royal Bengal Tiger, one horned Rhino.

31 Introduction Tribhuvan University(T.U.) was established in 1956 AD. Is the first and largest University in Nepal The University has 60 constituent campuses and over 1000 affiliated campuses including private all over the country.
32 Introduction Total student population of over a million. It has five constituent institutes of Engineering, Forestry, Agriculture, Medicine, and Science and Technology. Institute of Engineering(IOE) is an autonomous institute of T.U. It has 4 faculties Law, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Management. There are four research centres at the University level and several at institute and faculty level.
33 Introduction The University has been pivotal in country s educational development It was the only University in the country until 1990 Its extremely large size (both in terms of number of campuses, faculties and students) and manage its affairs smoothly. Regular pass out from IOE started in 1988 in Civil Engineering and 1998 in other disciplines. In a very short span of time, our alumni have achieved research and academic excellences in Asia Pacific Region, North America and even Many European Universities.
51 We seek Bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Universities and HEIs of Asia and EU region under the framework of Erasmus+ The model under which our partner Universities are run successfully may be an eye opener for Nepal s HEIs. University education not always being as per the End Users requirement is the main challenge for TU at present. Several steps are being taken to improve this situation.
