Early morning arrivals will incur the expense of an extra hotel night if you want check-in on arrival. Feb 2/Nov 5 Day 2 Delhi / Hotel The Metropolitan (B,L,D) Full day tour of Old and New Delhi including the Jama Masjid Mosque & a rickshaw ride through the market in Old Delhi and India Gate, Raj Ghat/Gandhi Memorial Museum, Lakshmi Narayan Temple (Birla Mandir) and Qutab Minar in New Delhi. Start the tour with a visit to the great Jama Masjid- the principal mosque of Old Delhi. Built in the year 1656 AD by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, it is the largest & best-known mosque in India. The courtyard of the mosque can hold up to twenty-five thousand worshippers. The mosque also houses several relics in a closet in the north gate, including an antique copy of the Qur'an written on deerskin. It lays at the origin of a very busy central street of Old Delhi, Chandni Chowk. Next take an exciting rickshaw ride through Chandi Chowk, the old marketplace of Shah Jahanabad now a colorful bazaar. We continue our tour, now driving to New Delhi. The first stop is at Raj Ghat, memorial to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. It is a simple black marble platform that marks the spot of his cremation on 31 January An eternal flame is lit. And then a visit to the Gandhi Memorial Museum, opposite Raj Ghat. We will stop for lunch at Pindi, a wonderful traditional North Indian restaurant. Afterwards drive past India Gate, memorial built in the year 1931 to commemorate the Indian soldiers who died in the World War I & the Afghan Wars. President's House built in the year Until 1950 it was known as Viceroy's House & served as the residence of the Governor-General of British India. Next, a quick stop to see Lotus Temple from the outside - one of the remarkable architectures of Bahai faith. Built in the shape of a lotus flower of pure while marble, cement, dolomite and sand it was designed by the Persian architect Fariborz Sahba and completed in The symbol of the lotus flower is common to Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Islam. The temple is open to people of all religions and provides an environment for meditation and prayer. Around the petals are nine pools of water, which light up at dusk. The temple has received recognition from all over the world for its splendid architecture and design. Onward to Qutub Minar, built in the year 1206 by Qutub-ud-din Aibek. It is the tallest (72m) brick minaret in the world, an important example of Indo-Islamic Architecture. Culminating the day, we drive 1.5 km west of Connaught Place to Lakshmi Narayan Temple. The soaring spire of the Lakshmi Narayan Temple (also called Birla Mandir) dominates the urbane skyline of Central Delhi. This garish, modern, Orissan style temple was erected by industrialist B.D. Birla in 1938 and was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi on the condition that people of all castes especially untouchables would be allowed in. The temple enshrines almost all the deities of the Hindu Pantheon, the presiding deity being Narayan (Vishnu, the preserver in Hindu trinity) and his consort Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity and good fortune. The revered shrine, nestling in the heart of the city, is as famous for its sanctity as for its architecture. Portraying an alluring blend of cream and red, the sacred shrine also affords a curious medley of Hindu mythology and ancient Indian architecture. The exterior is of white marble and red sandstone with tall curved towers. Visiting hours are from 7 am to 12 noon and 2 to 9 pm. Just north of the main temple, we visit Geeta Bhawan (Hall) where paintings depicting scenes from Indian mythology are displayed. Aartis (puja ceremony) are performed every evening, 6:30-7 pm. Other attractions

are the gardens and fountains inside the premises. Welcome dinner at Chore Bizare Restaurant. Feb 3/Nov 6 Day 3 Delhi Varanasi / Gateway Ganges (B, D) Transfer to airport for flight to Varanasi 9W723 dep. 1025/arr Upon arrival, transfer to hotel. Lunch on your own. This afternoon we shall visit Sarnath where, in 500 BC, Lord Buddha preached his first sermon 'Maha- Dharma-Chakra Pravartan Sutta' (in Buddhist terminology, turn the wheel of the law ) after his enlightenment. The very spot is marked by the Dhamekh Stupa, adorned with delicate floral carvings. Sarnath is one of the richest in Buddhist antiquities ranging in date from the times of Ashoka to the 12th century A.D. Ashoka built here the Dharmarajika Stupa and erected a pillar surmounted by the magnificent capital of four Lions, which today form the national emblem of India. We can walk the path, located in the midst of the archeological park, to see the ruins of the small brick monastery where Buddha lived during his visits. About 600 meters before the Archeological Museum, we will see the Chaukhandi Stupa. It was originally built during the Gupta Period (4-6 th c AD) as a temple to mark Buddha s first meeting with his disciples while traveling from Bodh Gaya to Sarnath. An octagonal tower was added at the top during the Mughal Period (1588). The excellent Archeological Museum contains an extremely rich collection of Buddhist sculptures of numerous Buddha and Bodhisatva images. After visiting the museum, we continue to Mahabodhi Society s Mulgandha Kuti Vihar Temple. A major place of worship for the Buddhist community of the world, it was constructed by Bodhisatva Anagarika Dharmapala ( ) from Sri Lanka at the very site where Shakyamuni Buddha preached his first sermon. The temple contains excellent frescoes painted by Japanese artist Kosetsu Notsu. He single handedly completed these paintings in a four year span ( ). It also houses a life size statue of Buddha in its sanctum and Gautam Buddha's holy relics are kept on display in the shrine. The monarchy of Japan has gifted a large bronze bell that dominates the entrance of the Vihar. The temple was opened to public on Nov. 11th, 1931 and the Mahabodhi Society of India oversees its affairs. A Bodhi tree stands on the left (east) side of the temple that is believed to have grown out of a sapling of the one under which Buddha attained enlightenment at Bodhgaya. Under this tree statues of Buddha and his disciples have been displayed. The casket of the sacred relics is taken out in a great procession from Mulgandha Kuti Vihar and goes around this tiny city of Sarnath annually on the anniversary day of Mulgandha Kuti Vihar, which falls on Kartik Purnima (Full moon day) in the month of Nov. At approx 6pm, local Buddhists chant the words to Buddha's first sermon. Afterwards, dinner at The Great Kabab Factory. Feb 4/Nov 7 Day 4 Varanasi - Divali Festival of Lights / Gateway Ganges (B, D) This morning we enjoy a very moving sunrise boat ride on the River Ganges to witness the religious ceremonies of Hindus. Afterwards, we shall enjoy a guided walking tour of temples and ghats. Return to hotel for breakfast. Rest of the morning is independent to relax or transport available to return to the old city to wander around independently. Lunch is independent.

In the late afternoon we return to Old Varanasi. There is always a flurry of activity around the banks of the river Ganges. We ll observe the people preparing for the evening rituals. This evening, we board a country boat to witness aarti (fire) ceremony performed by Hindu priests on the banks of River Ganges. Dinner at Varuna Restaurant in the hotel. Feb 5/Nov 8 Day 5 Fly Varanasi Khajuraho / Radisson Hotel (B, D) Transfer to airport for flight to Khajuraho 9W 2423 dep / arr Transfer to hotel for check-in and lunch on your own at the hotel restaurant. This quiet, genial, dusty village is awash with temples. Temples for everything - sun gods, sacred bulls and, more memorably, sex. Stone figures of apsaras or `celestial maidens' pout and pose like Playboy pin-ups while mithuna, erotic figures, run through a whole Kama Sutra of positions and possibilities. It's highly salacious stuff and one reason why the temples of Khajuraho are famous throughout the world. The other reason is that they are liberally embellished with some of the finest handiwork of the Chandela period, a dynasty which survived for five centuries before falling to the onslaught of Islam. Visitors are also drawn to a dance festival, celebrated in March, which attracts some of the best classical dancers in the country - the floodlit temples provide a spectacular backdrop during the event. This afternoon we shall visit the Western Group of temples from the Chandella period, 9th- 11th century that are illustrated with remarkable sculptures of the classic erotic literature the Kama Sutra. These are the largest group and most important temples. Of the original 85, only 25 survive and each is a masterpiece dedicated to different deities. The temples were lost among the forest for centuries and were accidentally discovered by a British army engineer in Externally, the temples consist of curvilinear towers with clusters of lesser turrets clinging to them, suggestive of rising mountain peaks converging round a great central peak. Round the exterior walls are two, sometimes three, superimposed rows of gods, goddesses, kings and heroes, courtesans, couples in carnal embrace and, in some cases, friezes depicting various forms of bestiality. The interiors are just as ornate, with an open portico leading into a main hall, then a vestibule beyond which is an inner sanctum containing the free-standing cult image. In fact, the sculpture and architecture blend so perfectly that each building appears to have been conceived by a single mastermind. Feb 6/Nov 9 Day 6 Khajuraho Orchha-Gwailor / Hotel Usha Kiran Palace (B, L, D) This morning we will visit the Eastern Temples and the old village of Khajuraho (where the local residents live). The village is very relaxed and quite traditional. Most of the temples here belong to Jain faith but there are three Hindu temples of the group, namely, the Brahma temple enshrining a four-faced linga; the Vamana temple with divine carvings of sensuous celestial maidens in various poses adorning its outer walls and the Javari temple with a opulently carved doorway and ostentatious sculptures on its exteriors. Next, a drive to Orchha (170km/ 105 miles/4 hours drive), the capital of the kingdom of the Bundella Rajputs from 1531 to We visit Jahangir Mahal Palace, an Indo-Persian style palace of the Mughul period and the Ram Raja Temple, built in the 17th century. NOTE: road conditions are very poor in this section. Mostly due to monsoon damage that has been slow to be repaired. This means the drive can be slow and bumpy. Lunch at the Amar Mahal in Orchha. Afterwards, drive 2.5 hours to Gwailor. Transfer to hotel Usha Kiran Palace. Rich in history, this 120-year-old Usha Kiran Palace played host to the King of England and is now a heritage hotel. Set amidst 9 acres of beautifully landscaped lawns, this regal palace is outfitted with artistic stone carvings and delicate filigree work. Enjoy the hotel ambiance and an evening at leisure.

Feb 7/Nov 10 Day 7 Drive to Agra (2 hrs) / The Taj Gateway Hotel (B, D) After check in visit Itmad-Ud-Daulah, the first white marble inlaid grave in pure Indo-Persian style, built between 1622 and Afterwards visit Agra Fort. Agra Fort, built principally as a military establishment by Akbar in The red sandstone Agra Fort was partially converted into a palace during Shah Jahan's time. This massive Fort is 2.5 km long & is considered as predecessor of Delhi Red Fort. Return to the hotel for some independent time and lunch on your own (pay direct). This afternoon we will tour the interior of the Taj Mahal and then have some time to linger just before sunset. Dinner at Pinch of Spice Restaurant. Feb 8/Nov 11 Day 8 Drive to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri (260 km / 4 hrs) Samode Haveli (B,L,D) Optional (extra cost $22 per person): At sunrise we drive to the parking lot and then travel by tonga (horse carriage) to the Taj Mahal (vehicles are not allowed to go to the entrance.) Return to hotel for breakfast. Afterwards, we shall drive to Jaipur, and, en-route, visit Fatephur Sikri, also called the deserted city. Fatephur Sikri, built in 1571, one of the world's most perfect ghost cities and a marvel of design and construction. It is a synthesis of the flourishing styles of the Persian courts and the prevailing Hindu-Islamic trends. Fatehpur (town of victory) Sikri was built by Akbar, the third and greatest of the Great Moguls. It is over 400 years old and today its pristine red sandstone buildings are as perfect as when they were first chiseled. The town was erected after a holy man, Sheikh Salim Chisti, decreed the births of three sons to Akbar after all his children had died in infancy. There are three sections to the City: The Royal Palace (notable for the Emperor's throne), the outside of the Royal Palace and the Jami Masjid (the location of the Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti, a masterpiece in brilliant white marble). The centerpiece of this remarkable monument is the Jewel House of the Diwan I Khas. Architecturally extraordinary, the four doorways lead into a single-story room where a huge central pillar supports a seat reached by mid-air walkways. We ll have a lunch stop at Laxmi Vilas Palace. On arrival in Jaipur, we check in to hotel and enjoy some independent time We ll enjoy dinner at Niros Restaurant. Feb 9/Nov 12 Day 9 Jaipur / Samode Haveli (B,D) This morning we enjoy a pleasant excursion to Amber Fort. Amber is the name of the ancient kingdom of Jaipur as well as the name of its ancient capital, before it was shifted to Jaipur, situated 7 miles away. Its history can be traced backed to the 12th century. Amber Fort is superbly located, protected by the wild Arrival Hills on all sides. Originally built in the 11th century, it was expanded by Raja Mannish in the late 16th century. The rugged exterior belies a beautiful and delicate interior. Return to the hotel and lunch on your own (pay direct). This afternoon, we ll embark on an extensive city tour including the City Palace, Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) and the Jantar Mantar Astronomical Observatory. Browse the bazaars if you wish.

At the heart of Jaipur is its City Palace which houses an extensive collection of rare manuscripts, Mughal and Rajasthani miniatures, Mughal carpets, costumes and textiles, arms and weapons, royal buggies, chariots and palanquins and a remarkable carriage -the indiraviman - that was drawn by four elephants. At the center is Chandra Mahal, the seven-tiered moon palace where the present Maharaja still resides. The City Palace complex also contains the Govind Devji Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna. Just outside the gateway of the City Palace is Jantar Mantar, the Yantralaya of Sawai Jai Singh II, the last great classical astronomer in India. The modernistic structures known as Yantras are the unique creations of this astronomer-king, designed by him and built by experts to observe the movements of the sun, moon, planets and stars. This is the largest of five observatories founded by him in various parts of the country. Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) is Jaipur's most-photographed building, a honeycomb palace with 953-latticed windows overlooking the bazaar and busy streets of Jaipur. Built in 1799 by the poet-king Pratap Singh, this extraordinary building was used by purdah-bound women to watch the grand processions that were a regular feature of the city. This evening: attend puja at Ganesh Temple; then dinner at Spice Court Restaurant. Feb 10/Nov 13 Day 10 Jaipur-Pushkar/ Pushkar Palace Hotel Feb (B) //Pushkar Bagh Nov (B,L,D) After breakfast we depart for Pushkar, a unique gem in the state of Rajasthan. En-route we visit Ajmer, a sacred place for both Hindus and Muslims. Here we visit the huge fascinating Dargah Sharif Mosque. It is a venerated holy place for both Hindus and Muslims. The mosque is actually a huge complex like a community containing different areas: food vendors, shops selling beads and spiritual items; separate areas for women and men to study the holy book and separate areas for call to prayer. The mosque houses the mausoleum of the Sufi saint, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, whose blessings are eagerly sought by pilgrims to his dargah. Known as the Dargah Sharif, the last resting place of the saint who died in 1235, it lies at the foot of a barren hill. The saint s marble domed mausoleum is India s most important shrine for Muslims and receives an endless flow of visitors of all religions as the sick, the troubled and the childless come here seeking a boon, a blessing or just peace of mind. Legend has it that the Mughal emperor, Akbar came here to the saint in the 16th century in quest of a boon for an heir and the saint obliged. We continue about 15 km to Pushkar, a pilgrimage city for thousands of years with over 500 temples and 52 ghats; and the only temple in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator, Pushkar radiates an ambience of peace and spirituality and still maintains an authentic small town ambiance. As a holy city, no meat or alcohol is permitted. Feb Tour: On arrival we check in to our hotel located on the banks of Pushkar Lake. Lunch on your own. Afterwards, a walking tour of the town including Jagatpita Brahma Mandir. Although the present temple structure dates to the 14th century, the temple is believed to be 2000 years old. We return to our hotel in time to witness the sunset ritual at the ghat (steps leading into the lake) next to our hotel with the locals. There will be drumming from every ghat (52) around the lake as the sunsets. A wonderful gesture and tradition. Nov Tour Pushkar Camel Fair: We arrive a couple of days prior to the tourism office s announced start of the fair to be able to mingle with a bit fewer outside visitors. The nomads arrive early to set up their tents, groom and decorate their camels and practice skills. A good deal of cattle trading happens at this time too. On arrival we check in to our hotel and have lunch. Our accommodation is located 500 meters far from the fairgrounds and one can wander through the nomadic camel herders camp quarters to see their lifestyles close up and to interact with them. They are very friendly and enjoy the exchange as well. The town of Pushkar surrounds a holy lake below the fair site. Afterwards, we will have some time to wander about the fair grounds. Then, late afternoon, a walking tour of

the town including Jagatpita Brahma Mandir. Although the present temple structure dates to the 14th century, the temple is believed to be 2000 years old. We reach the main ghat (steps leading into the lake) next to Pushkar Palace Hotel just before sunset to witness the sunset ritual with the locals. There will be drumming from every ghat (52) around the lake as the sun sets. A wonderful gesture and tradition. Feb 11/Nov 14 Pushkar-Jodhpur (3 hr drive)/ Ajit Bhawan (B,D) This morning we go to the festival grounds, located above the town. We will wander through the nomadic camel herders camp quarters to see their lifestyles close up and to interact with them. They are very friendly and enjoy the exchange as well. Afterwards, we depart for the drive to Jodhpur. On arrival check-in to the hotel and lunch on your own at our charming hotel (pay direct). This afternoon a city tour of Jodhpur including the 15th century Mehrangarh Fort, perched majestically on a high hill. The best way to trace the history of Jodhpur is to visit the fort, which dominates the skyline. We enter through gates, which bear the evocative handprints of the Sati queens, women of the royal harem who took their own lives when their men were defeated in battle. The fort has a series of spectacular palaces, each decorated with exquisite engravings, lattice and mirror work. Of particular note is the museum that exhibits a magnificent collection of royal memorabilia. Also see the graceful cenotaph at Jaswant Thada. This evening browse the bazaars of the old city, for Jodhpur is well known for its glass bangles, puppets and other folk art. Ornate mirror-embedded and lacquer-finished glass bangles can be found here. The area around the bazaars is a wonderful example of 19th century town planning, blending Rajasthani concepts with more contemporary styles. We enjoy dinner at Garden restaurant, an open-air restaurant with multi-cuisine and barbeque. It will be a lively ambiance with dance and music performances. Feb 12/Nov 15 Jodhpur Narlai (160 km/3 hrs)/ Rawla Narlai (B, L, D) This morning we drive three hours to Narlai, an enchanting village located amidst dramatic boulders and ancient temples. The Rawla lies at a foothill of a stupendous foot single rock granite hill. Maharaj and Rani Swaroop Singh and their sons oversaw the careful restoration of this 15th century home of Marwar nobility. The ambience is a special blend of aesthetics and comfort that envelop the senses. After check-in we enjoy a wonderful home-cooked lunch on arrival at Rawla Narlai. This afternoon we explore the nearby villages including bustling bazaars and temples where a miraculous flame has burnt for we centuries producing saffron instead of soot! Wishes made here are said, come true. Feb 13/Nov 16 Narlai - Udaipur (140 km/4 hrs) / Fateh Prakash Palace (B,L) Drive to Udaipur en-route visiting Ranakpur Jain Temples with 1444 pillars. Surrounded by tangled forests with monkeys abounding in the courtyard, Ranakpur is one of five important pilgrim centers for the Jain community. Noted for its grandiose scale and elaborate ornamentation, of the three temples, the Adinatha is the most outstanding. Built by Daranshah in 1439, the temple is dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankara saint. The whole, including the extraordinary array of 1444 sculptured pillars, each distinct in design, carved ceilings, and arches decorated with friezes depicting scenes from the lives of the Jain saints, Jain mythology and cosmology, is magnificent! The tour inside the main temple will be by audio headset, guides are no longer allowed inside. This is to respect the silence, as it is a living temple where people are praying, meditating and performing devotional rituals. Lunch at the wonderful Maharani Bagh (Mango Orchard of the Maharaja of Jodhpur) near the temples. After lunch continue to Udaipur.

Just before sunset board a boat for a cruise on Lake Pichola. We will disembark at Jagmandir Palace for dinner (the menu has a wide variety of options; pay direct). Feb 14/ Nov 17 Udaipur / Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel (B,D) We start the morning with a visit the City Palace, the largest Palace complex in the area and the Museum of Rajasthan as well as the Crystal Gallery located inside the palace. The City Palace is a blend of stern Rajput military architecture on the outside and lavish Mughal-inspired decorative art on the inside. Set on a hill overlooking Lake Pichhola, it is quite large and made up of at least four separate inter-connecting palaces, built over a period of nearly 3 centuries. The palace museum contains a wonderful collection of old Rajput weaponry. We also visit the exquisite Crystal Gallery located across the upper gallery of the Durbar Hall Sabhagaar. The gallery contains the world s single largest collection of crystal under one roof. It was in 1877 that Maharana Sajjan Singh (period of reign: ) ordered the crystal collection from the Birmingham-based F&C Osler Company. The collection includes a bewildering number of objects d'art, dinner sets, perfume bottles, decanters, glasses, washing bowls and even furniture. The Crystal Gallery also houses the only crystal bed in the world! The collection has been customized for the House of Mewar; the Crest of Mewar being delicately etched on the crystal, adding yet another amazing facet. Afterwards we take a walk through the colorful Bapu Bazaar and enjoy some independent strolling. The bazaar is an easy walk back to the hotel. We suggest lunch at the excellent Fateh Prakash restaurant (pay direct), adjacent to the City Palace. This afternoon enjoy a walking tour with our guide, of the cobbled, narrow quaint streets in the area outside the City Palace gates; we shall also visit miniature-painting studios. We ll dine tonight at The UPRE Restaurant with spectacular views of the City palace and Lake Pichola. The restaurant offers fine international cuisine as well as authentic flavors of Rajasthan. This evening, at 7 pm, we enjoy a music and dance performance at the Bagore-ki-Haveli, a gorgeous 18th century haveli that has been converted into a museum showcasing Mewar art and architecture. This haveli puts on one of the best Rajasthani folk dance shows in Rajasthan Dharohar Dance. For an hour, performers dance to Rajasthani folk music wearing bright colored ethnic dresses. The dances are varied and demonstrate the tradition and culture of Rajasthani folklore. The haveli also houses an interesting art gallery, featuring fine examples of Mewar contemporary and folk art, and an eclectic selection of world-famous monuments lovingly carved out of polystyrene.
