7 NEW Jewels from the Treasury August 2012 Vasubandhu s Verses on the Treasury of Abhidharma with its commentary, Youthful Play, by the Ninth Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje foreword by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche translated by David Karma Choephel cover by Rafael Ortet hardcover, 6 x 9 in. 684 pages, $ ISBN: From karma to states of meditation, world systems to the workings of our minds Vasubandhu s Treasury of Abhidharma examines the key topics of Buddhism carefully, thoroughly, and concisely. The Ninth Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje s commentary elucidates Vasubandhu s text in a way that is accessible to those new to abhidharma studies and also satisfying to those seeking a deeper understanding. Both texts are capably translated by David Karma Choephel, whose rendering of the root verses in meter is both melodic and mnemonic. Whether we are interested in madhyamaka studies or practicing mahamudra, studying Jewels from the Treasury will provide us with insight into the topics that are the foundation of all the Buddhist systems of philosophy and meditation. Elizabeth M. Callahan Of these three trainings, the primary one for destroying the afflictions and attaining the ultimate result is the superior training in full knowing. Developing this training depends mainly on the pitaka of abhidharma, and that in turn depends mainly on the treatises of abhidharma. Of all these treatises, the easiest and clearest is the Treasury of Abhidharma, so if you study the Treasury, it will bring great benefit. Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche 7

His Holiness also oversaw the stage design, rehearsed actors, and generally provided creative direction at all stages of the production. His Holiness made full use of the genre of theater to bring Milarepa s suffering and spiritual transformation to life, allowing the 12

13 audience to connect with Milarepa s life in new and vivid ways. When Milarepa returns to his native land hoping to see his mother, he learns instead that she has long since died of heartbreak, and her neglected corpse was left to rot in their abandoned home. Finding her weathered bones piled in the ruins of the house, Mila falls to his knees and tenderly gathers her bones in his lap. The viewing screens erected throughout the arena were put to great effect during this scene, as a close-up shot of the tears streaming down Mila s grieving face allowed the audience to share in the depth of Mila s emotions. At this point, tears were shed by many audience members as well. 13

Compassion NOW! is a work not only focused on how love and compassion are the root of all Buddhist practices, but is a call to put these compassionate feelings into action in the world. Compassion focused on living things in the environment, green compassion, is particularly valuable and appropriate nowadays. In general, my point is that one s initial object or subsequent objects of compassion need not be limited to human beings alone. One s root object can be other types of beings, including animals, including trees and plants, or even me. You could think about me with compassion, Oh, he suffers so much. He has so little control over where he goes and what he does, so little freedom. And he s under so much pressure. His Holiness the Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa 20
