The cost for zazenkai is $75. 3-Day January A 3-day sesshin will be held at Myoshinji, beginning on Friday evening, January 15, and running through Monday morning, January 18 (Martin Luther King Day, national holiday). is an intensive meditation retreat that offers us an important opportunity to strengthen our practice. In addition to alternating periods of zazen and kinhin (sitting and walking meditation)as well as opportunities for dokusan, the daily schedule includes one period of samu (work practice), three services, three meal periods (oryoki style) and teisho (dharma talk) given by Roshi. Registration for GPZC Events Please register for any sesshin, zazenkai or workshop at least 1 week prior to the start. This allows us to assign positions and arrange other logistics for the event. If you will be unable to meet this deadline, please contact us to make arrangements and check on availability of space in the event. Late cancellations are subject to a $35 non-refundable fee. The cost for each zazenkai is $75. The cost for each 3-day sesshin is $150 for current Practicing Members; $180 for others. Students may attend any sesshin on a part-time basis ($50 per day for current Practicing Members; $60 per day for others). To register, please register/pay online at greatplainszen.org. & are Unique and Rare Opportunities to Deepen our Practice a message from Roshi I would like to encourage those who have been practicing to consider the importance and great benefit of attending zazenkai and sesshin, or intensive retreats. While practicing daily at home is very important, having the chance to set other concerns aside and dive deep into practice is a challenging, but truly remarkable experience in our practice lives. While it is not easy for many of us to create this space in our lives with our multiple responsibilities, I would encourage us to try to do so. During zazenkai and sesshin, we all live together at Myoshinji and follow the same schedule with multiple periods of zazen interspersed with walking meditation, as well as services, formal meals and work period throughout the day. Silence throughout the week or weekend allows us to focus on our practice intensely, without the usual distractions. In the words of Keizan Zenji, Listening and thinking are like being outside the gate; zazen is returning home and sitting in peace. Future Event Dates for 2010 The Board of Directors has set special activity dates for the coming year. Please visit the greatplainszen.org to monitor any possible changes which may occur to these planned dates. 3-Day Nirvana Day February 26 - March 1 3-Day April 1-4 May June Day July Day August 5-8 * Start of Summer Ango * End of Summer Ango

New Members Orientation Nights in Palatine John Daido Loori Roshi Dies at 78 John Daido Loori Roshi, successor to Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi Roshi (and dharma brother of Myoyu Roshi), founder of the Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism, and abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery, and one of the most influential Zen masters in the West, died at the Monastery in Mount Tremper, New York on Friday, October 9th. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer eighteen months earlier. Daido Roshi, who in a magazine interview conducted in the 90s referred to his style of Zen teaching as radical conservatism, was a dynamic religious figure whose depth of spiritual insight, fierce commitment to his students and the Buddhist tradition, personal charisma, business acumen and sharp organizational skills contributed to the creation of a well respected and wide ranging organization of Zen Buddhist temples and practice centers in the United States and abroad. His life-long work was recognized by Franklin Pierce University in May of this year with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Continuing this quarter, GPZC will designate one Sunday night each month for New Members Orientation. Those who are new members or considering membership in GPZC will enjoy an opportunity to learn about some important topics in informal sessions with Roshi or senior students over tea prior to scheduled sitting. Orientation teas will begin at 6:15, and last about half an hour, followed by sitting at 7:00. With one focus each evening, topics to be discussed include: Zendo Procedures; Bells and Service Positions; Chanting and Liturgy; Retreat Opportunities and Daily Routines. And there will always be time for questions and answers each time as well. Please join us and get to know GPZC members in an informal setting. New class offered at Myoshinji on Eightfold Path.
