1 Goal Setting Session 8 Session Summary: In this session, Ron Blue will share the value of setting goals, as well as provide some tools to help clients set goals. The process of goal setting is more important than the actual goals. In this session, we will consider: 1. Why should we set goals? 2. Why don t we set goals? 3. How to not set goals 4. Why do you think that is? 2. What is the relationship between goals and? 3. What is the relationship between goals and faith? III. Principles and Precepts (Biblical Wisdom) The mind of a man plans his way, But the LORD his steps. (Proverbs 16:9 NASB) Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us... (Ephesians 3:20 NIV) The plans of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. Therefore do not be vague and thoughtless and foolish, but understanding and firmly grasping what the will of the Lord is. (Ephesians 5:15-17 AMP) Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1 NASB) for whatever is not from faith is sin. (Romans 14:23b NKJV) Biblical Stewardship Defined: Biblical Stewardship is the use of God-given gifts and (time, talent, treasure, truth, relationships, etc.) for the accomplishment of God-given goals/objectives. (Ephesians 5:21 NKJV) Definition of a Faith Goal: An objective toward which I believe God wants me to. Definition of Faith: Faith is acting on the basis that this is what God wants me to do. Faith goals are critical for believers and the exclusive purview of believers. 4. A goal is always a statement of and is one of the primary ways that I can see the hand of God in my financial affairs. VI. PRACTICE Client Counsel Objectives 1. It is essential that the client/donor understand that every decision is an attempt to accomplish some goal, stated or unstated. 2. Goals are a means of effective decision-making. 3. 5 4. Goals need to be made measurable, and reviewed on at least an annual basis. Helping a Client\Donor Set Goals: 1. Use the financial planning chart to review the goal setting areas 2. How have your goals since the last time we met? 3. What does your spouse\children think about this goal? 4. What do you think your spouse s are? Goals Check-Up: Short-term: 1. Do I have peace of mind with my financial decision-making? 2. What am I most concerned about in the next six to twelve months? 3. What am I most concerned about in the next one to five years? 4. Am I comfortable with my level of giving? 5. Am I paying too much in taxes? 6. Are my expenses too high or too low? Long-Term: 1. What am I most concerned about in the long term? 2. Are there some potential financial events that cause me? 3. Am I comfortable with my debt level? 4. Am I making towards my goals? 5. Should I reposition my investment portfolio?
